Multiple shootings at Va Tech

Truely sad... I use to live 15 minutes from that campus and know many students there, been to many parties, and even gone to a ton of spring games. I can't believe something like this can happen at such a quiet and peaceful place like blacksburgh. Too bad that guy took the easy way out and killed himself because he deserved to be taken a live and prosecuted. All of this because he was mad at his girlfriend. unbelieveably sad...

i just had this argument with a coworker - why is ESPN covering this?

#1 - we dont know that this is involves anyone related to VaTech athletics
#2 - ESPN is not a credible news source

Just a guess, but from past experience in broadcasting I know the one thing you don't want to mess with is the soaps. People really wierd out when you interrupt or cancel a soap. This gives ABC coverage and an excuse for not going to full news mode.

IN this day and age of cable TV, I'd rather normal programming never be interrupted. YOu can always go to the Net or cable news networks for info.

Somehow this makes me even more sad then I already was.

The President gave a brief speech, expressing his sorrow and offering federal assistance in the investigation, or any other type the area would ask for.

Let's keep politics out of this thread.

Eyewitness report (BBC)

Nikolas Macko was in class at Virginia Tech when a gunman entered the building and started shooting. He described the experience to the BBC News website.

I was in class in Norris Hall at around 0940 when we heard a series of loud bangs coming from the hallway.

The sound did not register immediately, even though it was startlingly loud.
When it started again seconds later, the girl sitting by the door decided to close the door.

She peeked out into the hallway, and saw the shooter, so she immediately closed the door shut.

Continued...

Thoughts and prayers are with the VT community...

Very unsubstantiated at this point, but I just heard from a buddy of mine that is at VT that supposedly this was all over a girl.

Not that it matters why, just sad

It sorta does matter, even if 30+ are already dead. It wasn't a terrorist attack or matter of national security, which in a way is comforting to a lot of people.

By the way, if you want to discuss the president's reaction, I split off the political stuff so you can talk about it in the poli forum.

I just read an article about this and a bunch of the students were complaining that they had no warning from the school administration, that just sending out an e-mail about the original shooting was not enough. Do they think the administration knew in advance that it was going to happen, that the first shooting was merely the beginnings of a massacre, and chose to do nothing? Or are the students simply shocked into less than logical thinking?

Believe me, most students don't have logical thinking. My thoughts are with the families now. I can't imagine the feeling....

More disturbing than the students (who obviously are traumatized) is the rush to second-guessing by reporters. It's amazing how smart people are in hindsight.

A faster email? The 911 call came in at 7:15. Classes start at 8. No way can word get out to students that fast.

Yeah, heaven forbid something as trivial as 33 people getting mercilessly slaughtered getting in the way of some fat-ass Bon-Bon-eating housewife finding out whether Gina is pregnant by her ex-husband or the UPS guy... :roll1:

As strange as this sounds, though no one can ever be comforted by this, I would have preferred that it would have been some terrorist attack, rather than some random act of violence. For some reason that's much scarier for me.
