Thanks for bumping this, BB73. It's nice to read older threads I wasn't around for. I've added a few things to my must see list... A few recent favorites of mine that haven't been mentioned:

The Royal Tenenbaums
Magnolia
Lost in Translation

Great movie, LJB. I've only dabbled in foreign & silent films, mostly German ones, but that's one of my favorites. I'll have to check out your other recommendations. Have you seen Fritz Lang's M? Another favorite of mine - better than Metropolis.

Edited for spelling - even the deputy nazi makes mistakes...
Um, a little late in responding, but usually my posts are worth waiting for....

M is a great movie, one of my top 20, and a far superior portrait of a serial killer than a Hollywood schlockfest such as Se7en.

For other great German flicks, check out anything by Werner Herzog (esp. Nosferatu, Aguirre Wrath of God, Mystery of Kaspar Hauser, and Invincible); G.W. Pabst (esp. Pandora's Box, The Love of Jeanne Ney, and Threepenny Opera); The Golem (1920 version); The Blue Angel with Marlene Dietrich and Emil Jannings; The Adventures of Prince Achmed (early animated feature); Tuvalu, a modern silent film; and Run, Lola, Run, a very cool movie.

Underrated Movie Thread

Underrated movie thread.

List a movie you think is underrated.

Criteria-
Not an Oscar winner, not a box office smash. Critically panned or ignored. Generally not well known.

Example-
Bubba Ho Tep- Bruce Campbell as Elvis in an old folks home teamed up with JFK (played by Ossie Davis) fighting a mummy that is stealing the souls of the residents.

http://imdb.com/title/tt0281686/

It is a ridiculous premise with a touching theme. It really is about how we treat the elderly in this country.

Looking forward to Bubba Nosferatu. Again with Bruce Campbell as Elvis, Paul Giamitti as Colonel Parker. If it gets made, it will be awesome.

The World's Fastest Indian- Anthony Hopkins is f'ing great as a nutjob Aussie who travels to the Bonneville Salt Flats to set the world land speed record on his rebuilt Indian. It's both funny and inspiring. The documentary on Burt Munro ("The God of Speed") is also on the DVD and it's just as good.

Artie Lange's Beer League- The plot...F The acting...F- However, it's filled with tons of great one liners and is a pretty accurate depiction of life in Jersey. I laughed my ass off. My wife actually liked it even more than I did.

Neil Young's Heart of Gold- The best concert film I've ever seen.

Run Ronnie Run is the essence of underrated. The movie is based on the character of Ronnie Dobbs from Mr. Show with Bob and Dave. The movie got held up by the production company, went straight to DVD, and was disowned by the creators due to their disgust with the final edit. Most fans of the show hate it and Bob has a rant about it on thier website where recommends renting it if you choose to watch it because he thinks the final version is such a turd. I don't think a movie could come with any less fanfare. As for the movie itself, it is the story of a redneck being recruited to do a Cops-esque reality show where he gets arrested every week. Chock full of hillarious scenes. David Koechner is especially funny as Ronnie's drunken sidekick Clay.

Shakes the Clown, written and directed by Bobcat Goldthwait is the story of an alcoholic clown. How could that not be raved by critics? Actually, a very funny social commentary about in groups and out groups. Watch for Robin Williams as a mime instructor.

A Cool Dry Place, Vince Vaughn plays a single father struggling to find a way to balance his career and taking care of his son after his wife bolts. Total chick flick, but very heartwarming. Rent this one for date night and your wife/girlfriend will be pleased.

The Fisher King, the other Holy Grail film directed by Terry Gilliam. In typical Gilliam fashion this modern day parable skirts between fantasy and reality. Jeff Bridges plays a Stern-esque radio shock jock whose comments send a listner over the edge resulting in him losing his career and falling into depression. He seeks redemption by befriending a mentally-ill homeless man played by Robin Williams on his quest to find the Holy Grail.

Dead Presidents, this Hughes Bros effort tackles the issue of the involvment of African Americans in the Viet Nam War. Very interesting combination of social commentary and war dramatization mixed into a heist film. The war scenes are not for the faint of heart.

A Galaxy Far, Far Away, I almost forgot this one. The only reason I even know about it is because I know the director. Documentary following the Star Wars phenomenon shot during the time leading up to the release of Episode I. Made with zero budget but still very funny. Unless you have Netflix or something similar, you'll have to buy this one. Not going to find it at the local video store.
