Most Underrated Movies (merged)

I liked Educating Rita with Michael Caine. Was in college at the time, having entered late, so could relate to Rita's experience.

The Truman Show stands in my mind as one of if not the most innovative film in years. (I think the slapstick element was wrong, but the producer never called to ask my opinion.)

Magic with Anthony Hopkins. "There's bodies in Lake Melody!" He outperformed himself.

Some movies I haven't seen.

The only movie that I found more disturbing than Audition is a Korean movie called Old Boy.

http://imdb.com/title/tt0364569/

The Castle is a great Australian film that is very family friendly and unbelievably quirky.

http://imdb.com/title/tt0118826/

The Last Boy Scout- great action flick with Bruce Willis and a Wayans brother. For what its worth the guy in the beginning who shoots himself is Mr. Tae Bo (Billy Blanks)

http://imdb.com/title/tt0102266/

BrainDead. Before Peter Jackson did LOTR, he did this zombie classic.

I will have more later.

I gotta agree with those who said
Brotherhood of the Wolf
Audition
Secretary (my wifes favorite)
Evil Dead II (There is an Evil Dead musical on off broadway, and they are working on an Evil Dead IV)

I would add The Machinist to the list of underrated movies...
christian bale's dedication to his role is both astounding and unsettling.

I think everybody has mentioned the movies I would've listed...
Memento - genius
Beautiful Girls -the single reason why I still play Sweet Caroline on the piano
[The Focus Features Flicks:
Lost in Translation - overall a great movie
Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind - best movie I had seen in years
The Door In The Floor - fantastic
21 Grams - the most depressing movie I've ever seen, a 10]
25th Hour - monologue mirror scene was powerful, amazing, should've won an oscar just for that scene
True Romance - the allstar cast of allstar casts
Roger Dodger - I wish I had an uncle like that
The Game
Falling Down - amazing movie
Pi
Requiem For A Dream
Vanilla Sky - still blows my mind
Unbreakable - M. Night got no love for this movie, I think it's his best
The Color Of Money
Poolhall Junkies
Rory O'Shea Was Here
Classics like:
The Guns Of Navarrone
The Great Escape
The Boys From Brazil

so many more to name...

Good calls on all of these except for Vanilla Sky, just came across as a tribute to narcissism. I mean the guy didn't want to be alive while his appearance was marred.

The Color ofMoney and The Great Escape are great movies, but I think they both are recognized as such. Color of Money got Newman an Oscar IIRC, and the Great Escape, well now it has its own H2 commercial.

True Romance- Quentin Tarantino wrote it IIRC, another good fun movie. Love the scene where Walken is questioning Hopper.

Some others-

A Touch of Evil- (Charlton Heston as a corrupt Mexican Sheriff)

Run Lola Run. techno fun.

The Five Deadly Venoms- the end all be all of Shaw Brothers Kung Fu Flicks.

More to come I am sure

Yeah, I agree with you about Color of Money and The Great Escape...just wanted to throw them in there. I really liked Vanilla Sky. While it was about himself it just threw me for a loop, and I thought it was well done. About the scene with Walken and Hopper in True Romance...quite possibly the finest dialogue I've ever seen in a movie. I was on the edge of my seat watching that. The outcome was inevitable, but it was still fucking awesome. Took a lot of stones for Hopper's character to say those things. And I personally believe Walken is the scariest individual on earth.

I also thought Natural Born Killers was awesome. What's Eating Gilbert Grape was great. Even though it did get recognition, I think people have forgotten about it. I'd include some cult comedies too like Best In Show and This Is Spinal Tap, and if nobody has seen Wet Hot American Summer, you need to rent it. I think people mentioned Wes Anderson's flicks The Royal Tenenbaums and Rushmore, but I thought The Life Aquatic was also exceptional. Bottle Rocket was good too. O Brother Where Art Thou was great and I really liked The Ladykillers...

Dark City
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0118929/

Some have accused The Matrix of stealing its story line from this movie (which I'm not sure if I believe or not). It's a great, lower budget sci-fi movie. The movie doesn't have stunning special effects, but its great story easily makes up for it--really good film.

I really like Dark City too. I thought the ending was a bit of a letdown after the build-up but it was still good.

Sleep now.
