Sweet Crude
I have sent Herbie a letter of encouragement for which he sent a nice reply. Kirk is a Buckeye to the core and any opinion he gives about Ohio State is only shielded by a cloak of objectivity...yet his passion still manages to shine through.
If I were mic'd during some of our losses this year, you would hear comments wanting EVERY OSU player short of Nugent, off the team. You would hear me saying I hate Tressel and that I wanted all of our coaches out on their butts. I say these things in the heat of the game, not because I believe them but because I am so attached to this team that it rips my heart out when they don't acheive to their capability. After an OSU loss, all I can do is think about it for the rest of the week.
Kirk Herbstreit is the same way after a game...it eats at him. He thinks about all the stupid things that happened and wonders how we can fix it. Then he is mic'd and put up in front of a national audience and asked his opinion on the team he is so dissapointed with.
For better and for worse, we have the voice of a true fan on a national stage. Sometimes this can be good for the University and sometimes it's not as good. I don't always agree with everything anyone says, but there are a few things I believe are ABSOLUTE TRUTH:
1. Kirk Herbsreit is one of the most passionate Buckeye fans you'll ever find.
2. Outside of occasional OSU-skewed commentary, he remains fair, balanced and extremely insightful as an analyst. He is one of the best
3. NO ONE deserves to receive the kind of critisism Kirk and his family has endured. When you are in the midst of a hard time, it should be your family (In this case, Buckeye fans) that backs you up and supports you...family should never tear you down.
I also think that this huge "ESPN conspiracy" theory that many of you have is getting a little old. ESPN would go after any University with the kind of fan base and national noteriety that tOSU has. They want ratings, listeners, stories and controversy. I won't deny that they have falsified reports to hurt the University, but all of it is in the interest of greed and profit...not just to spite us. To think that a company like ESPN is willing to throw away money in a mass conspiracy to kill a sports program, is an extremely narcissistic point of view. Wait this out and think about it the next time you laugh about and believe reports about other schools.
