Madison police believe there may have been a "precipitating event" that led to the attack on Wisconsin running back Montee Ball Wednesday morning.

According to the Wisconsin State Journal, Central District Captain Carl Gloede says the police are trying to find out "what the incident was, when and where it happened."

The police are also looking into whether or not Ball or any other Wisconsin football players were involved.

Gloede also said that a witness told the police that one of Ball's assailants said something like "one down, nine to go" suggesting that there are other targets.

As for the TMZ report that Ball was involved in a fight at a player's home before the attack, and that Ball emphatically denied, the police said the incident TMZ reported is "not what we're looking at."

Ball suffered a concussion and had to be treated at a local hospital following the attack. He will miss the start of Wisconsin training camp on Monday due to the concussion.

The Heisman finalist finished the 2011 season with 1,923 rushing yards and 39 total touchdowns for the Badgers.

Ball addresses attack at UW's media day

Any lingering physical damage to Wisconsin running back Montee Ball from an attack that sent him to the hospital wasn't visible Sunday as he sat on a folding chair inside Camp Randall Stadium.

The damage to Ball's image, whether fair or not, hasn't healed quite as quickly.

In the 11 days since five men assaulted and concussed Ball near campus during the early morning hours of Aug. 1, many have questioned Ball's character and his commitment to Wisconsin's football team. Why was he out until 2:15 a.m. that night? Why had a Heisman Trophy candidate put himself in a vulnerable position yet again during this offseason?

On Sunday during Wisconsin's media day, Ball finally had an opportunity to provide a response when he spoke with reporters for the first time since his attack.

"You can say that I shouldn't have been out at 2 in the morning," Ball said. "But I was a block away from my apartment, literally inside of my apartment, when I got attacked. We're in college and this and that. I'm not making any excuses for myself. I was just in a bad position at the wrong time."

What? He was a block away, yet he was literally inside his apartment? Um, methinks the head injury is more than being reported.

This is a huge pet peeve of mine. Claiming to take responsibility by saying "I'm not making excuses" while simultaneously deflecting blame and playing the victim card. Either be a man and take responsibility or don't.

As much as I hate Bucky, I never want to see someone get hurt.
First, on campus, now, on the field. Kid shoulda went pro when he had the chance.

Wisconsin Badgers: Montee Ball's status uncertain

MADISON, Wis. -- Whether tailback Montee Ball returns to the Wisconsin lineup for the Big Ten Conference opener, the Badgers appear equipped to compensate for his absence, at least temporarily.

The reasons: junior James White and redshirt freshman Melvin Gordon.

White looks more like the back who rushed for more than 1,000 yards as a freshman in 2010 and less like the back who struggled at times last season.

Gordon is just beginning to show why Ball believes the standout from Kenosha, Wis., may have more physical ability than any back on the Wisconsin roster.

"We feel real comfortable and coach Hammock always tell us to be ready," White said after Wisconsin's 37-26 victory over Texas-El Paso, referring to running backs coach Thomas Hammock. "You never know when somebody is going to be hurt. You have to be ready to step in and take over."

Ball left the game for good in the first minute of the second quarter after suffering an unspecified head injury. A decision will be made later this week on whether he plays against Nebraska. He had 40 yards and a touchdown on nine carries.

At the time, Gordon had two carries for 30 yards and White had two carries for 5 yards.

If Bile-enema runs him out there on Saturday....there's a special place in hell for that guy.

Gordon has looked like the best of the three in the brief stints he's played. White is not going to last through an entire Big Ten season; he's just too small.

Ball has been tentative and tends to leave his feet a lot to avoid tackles, and it's cost him. He doesn't look nearly as explosive either.
