MLB General Discussion (Official Thread)

I love the shot clock and the shorter games but stolen bases are going to be crazy this year

Already saw the Nat's pitcher use his two check throws and the runner basically get into a sprinters stance to steal.

If base runners get too aggressive pitchers will have to take more chances with the third throw, which is allowed only if it results in an out. Risky if there are guys on first and third, but if it's just a guy on first and he going to steal anyway then take a shot at picking him off.

But I'm already a fan of the changes. It's amazing that pitchers and batters can do their jobs without wandering behind the mound or readjusting their batting gloves after each pitch. Get the pitch, get your ass in the box, and let's go.

The umps that sit on the inside corner miss these calls all day. There's a reason they used to all line up directly behind the plate.

At no point was the ball close to being a strike. He wasn't fooled by a break, he's just looking from a poor angle. It's ridiculous.

I was thinking the same thing as I watched that game (I watched some of all the games yesterday)

Ohtani was actually struggling and still did what he did but the Angles were fucked because Trout was walked once and hit three shots into the outfield that happened to get caught.

The other 24 guys on that roster should donate their checks to charity.

Zero reason to call that a strike. That said, umpires are taught to be on the inside shoulder of the catcher and that's not changing.

Umps are taught to figure out the alignment of the outside corner either with his outside foot (look at the video, it's on the outside corner) or by the catcher's alignment where his chest is centered on the outside corner as well when receiving the pitch. Anything outside of that should be a ball. Even with that, he seems to sorta hesitate before calling it (unknown if that is his way of calling or not)...

Without seeing the rest of the zone/pitches, it's not possible to say if this was just a mistake or if this was normal though. Sometimes umps will blow one. It happens.
