MLB General Discussion (Official Thread)

The Astros went from losing over 100 games in 2011-13 to winning over 100 a year from 2017-19. I see Houston's rise as more cheating-connected than the Red Sox, who while also cheating have been consistently competitive and Cora only managed them for 2 years. There will certainly be some more investigation into the 2018 Red Sox for sure.

I don't know. Houston stockpiled an incredible amount of young talent during those lean years. I think they may well have still won it without the cheating. They have a ton of talented players. But now it's all tainted. Just stupid.

What's shocking is how deep this goes. It wasn't just some rogue coach and/or player. It looks like they had an entire system. I know it would never happen, but if mlb wants to test out the relegation deal, here's your franchise. Banish the fuckers. Red Sox too if it runs deep there. (I know the idea of mlb banishing a flagship franchise is ludicrous, but a boy can dream)

Yes, their talent improved significantly, but at the same time the cheating gave them an extra boost over some other franchises. Also, I think it is pretty well known that the Astros are also coaching their pitchers to use a substance to help them spin the ball better. But a lot of big league pitchers do something similar, and the MLB is not really serious about policing it, so that is less scandal and more exploiting a gray area that the MLB should address if they are serious about truly leveling the playing field. It is amazing how some guys have gotten incredible boosts on their spin rates since joining the Astros, guys in their 30s when they came to Houston. That isn't a coincidence.

And don't forget, the Astros also had a confederate filming the opposing dugout from the media bay. Dude was not a media member and got in there and taped opposing dugouts to feed the Astros intel.

My understanding, I could be wrong since I haven't felt like spending a bunch of time on it, is the Astros were only able to do this at home games.

Odd thing about that, if true, is they had a better road record than home in 2017 and again in 2018. In 2019 they were much better at home.
