Mixed Martial Arts (Official Thread)

I really will be pulling for jardine in that one. I never really care that much for a particular fighter as much as the entire card, but having brandon vera fight every single damn card is getting old. His last performance was horrible for a guy who won..Hopefully jardine will end this fiasco..I'm ready to see someone else become the low grade work horse.

I still an trying to figure out the point of having AS fight in the 205's last weekend...All that talent in that weight class and he fights some guy they pulled out of audience with a tapout shirt on.

Wow... someone piss in your cheerios this morning or what? Vera didn't fight for a while after he broke his hand, then came back and got his ass kicked, and a few months later he was on the free card. I thought his fight at 205 was boring as hell, and hopefully he moves back up to heavy weight. As for Silvas fight, I can assume a few things, 1) No major star wanted to take a fight with him where they weren't getting a percentage of the ppv. 2) They wanted Silva to fight someone with the knock out power of a 205 instead of someone who would want to roll around on the ground.

And Irvin may not be the best 205 fighter, but he has had a few knock outs with those knees that made me cringe. And fwiw, I don't think Dana White wants Anderson Silva holding the light heavyweight and middle weight title belts, it really cuts down on the times he can have title fights since he can't make Silva fight every 2-3 months to defend each title.

Like I said to you like 10 times now, if you don't like the UFC, don't watch it, seesh.

There is no way that could be assured. If he were to move up and fight in to 205's against the best the business has to offer there is no way you can say he would dominate that weight class. He very well might, but that's a big might. Why not have him fight in the 205's for good and pay him more so he has better competition, and it's worth it to him. Doesn't he walk around@ 220lbs? To have him move up and fight Irvin was a waste. There was absolutely no point in that other then saying "he can compete at a heavier weight class"...Silva is a badass by all means, but putting him up against someone he might lose to in the 205's would have made him look bad..JMO..It almost looked like some kind of marketing tactic. I would say the same thing if fedor would have been fighting a christmas present fighter as well. It has nothing to do with the UFC. If they are the best fighters in the world..Make them fight each other. Don't have an event with a stud versus a joke as the main event ( I was very happy to see forrest v rampage fwiw, that's a fight)..

I guess the fact that Vera has fought twice in what 50 days is a little much to stomach. He's not amazing by any standards. He came into his last fight overweight..To me he just acts like he doesn't care, and doesn't take his training serious at all. Regardless of potential or whatever it might be,you can't tell me there aren't better guys to put on..Until he puts on a remarkable show against a reputable fighter(other then frank mir years ago) he really isn't doing much

Dude, seriously, your mancrush on Fedor is starting to freak me out. That fight wasn't anything exciting either, so stop trying to tell me it was. a 30 second fight where Tim Sylvia didn't even seem to want to be there isn't anything but saying "Look how amazing this guy is" the same thing the UFC did with Anderson Silva. Difference here is that you don't like Dana White and like to Bash everything the UFC does.

Silva has done damn well fighting in the 185's, Why doesn't he fight in the 205's? Maybe he's not comfortable or as fast at that weight, I honestly don't know but I do know he beat Dan Hendersons ass in 2 rounds, the guy who held the Pride middle weight and light heavy weight belts. A guy who I kept hearing "When Henderson gets to the UFC watch out, you're going to see what a real MMA fighter can do"

The thing is, I only heard that fight mentioned in this thread, the fights known for UFC89 are as follows:

UFC 89 Bouts (officially announced):
Michael Bisping vs. Chris Leben
Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou vs. Luis Cane
Dan Hardy vs. Akihiro Gono
Shane Carwin vs. Neil Wain

UFC 89 Bouts (unannounced):
Thiago Alves vs. Diego Sanchez
Paul Kelly vs. Marcus Davis
Jess Liaudin vs. David Bielkheden
Sammy Schiavo vs. Per Eklund
Sam Stout vs. Terry Etim -David Barron vs. TBA
Paul Taylor vs. TBA

I just said Jardine V Vera would be a fight I would like to see.

Ok so let's get this straight. Fedor beating a former heavyweight champion of the ufc(in 38 seconds)is comparable to anderson silva beating Irvin? You don't think it's not the slightest bit odd that a badass guy by all means would move up a weight class to fight a cakewalk?

Do you think that Tim sylvia couldn't compete in an already horrid heavyweight division of the ufc? Couldn't be he was going to pay lesnar more money and he hadn't even fought though could it? Big shocker..look it up if you would like..The ONLY reason I dislike the ufc is dana white. He is a bullshitter who rapes fighters and disregards them, when their contracts are up. Think different? What about randy couture? Wasn't he the real american hero of mma? Look at the money he was getting paid compared to others..If Randy was 26 instead of 43 it would be a different story on keeping him happy, and it's kind of hard to play the age card on a guy that was still kicking ass and taking names regardless.

Nowhere did I say AS wasn't a certified badass. He will continue to roll anyone in the world(any organization, let's be honest) in the 185's hands down. I would be surprised in the future if he doesn't move up to the 205's for good just for the money he is going to be paid to do it and the competition that it can present(i'm guessing a guy that good is going to want to fight against the best opposition he can get). I'm not saying AS is ducking anyone at all. He is a killer. I'm just saying it sucks that you and I have to settle for subpar events when it doesn't have to be that way.

There is more talent in the ufc by leaps and bounds. It's not even close, but the thing is more and more small feds open up and suck some of these guys down in it will eventually catch up..Especially with some of the money(affliction) has to throw around..I think it's great for mma..it will present more of a competition for pay per views..Instead of (insert super star name here) versus (insert guy most people don't even know and advertise him up like he's not going to give his dentist a shitload of money on monday)

Ortiz close to signing with affliction

Sources have told Yahoo! Sports that free agent Tito Ortiz will fight Renato "Babalu" Sobral in the co-main event at Affliction's next fight card, on Oct. 11 at the Thomas & Mack Center on the UNLV campus in Las Vegas. The main event will feature a heavyweight bout between WAMMA champion Fedor Emelianenko and Andrei Arlovski.
Affliction vice president Tom Atencio would not confirm the Ortiz-Babalu fight. He said details for the fight card will be released during an Aug. 6 news conference that most likely will be held in Las Vegas.
Atencio also indicated that he didn't think Affliction could speak with Ortiz until Aug. 4 because of a 60-day non-compete clause in Ortiz's UFC contract. Ortiz's last fight for UFC was on May 24 at UFC 84. If the 60-day clause is accurate, the deal ended last weekend. Atencio said the biggest stumbling block for an Ortiz deal would be the financial terms.
Affliction would seem to have the inside track at signing Ortiz, a former UFC light heavyweight champion (15-6-1, 14-6-1 UFC). He and his girlfriend, Jenna Jameson were conspicuous during the Affliction "Banned' event, sitting next to Affliction partner Donald Trump. Ortiz and Trump developed a relationship during the most recent season of The Apprentice.
Sobral told MMAJunkie.com that Ortiz is the fight he wants.
"That's my dream fight," a smiling Sobral said. "I'm looking for another guy. Wait for the name. It's coming. I think Tom (Atencio) is going to bring a name for me. And I'll be here to kick his ass."
Babalu's relationship with UFC ended in August of 2007. Sobral (30-7, 6-4 UFC) was released from his contract after a controversial win over David Heath. Sobral would not release a choke even after referee Steve Mazzagatti stopped the fight. Babalu won his Affliction debut on Jul. 19 with a unanimous decision over Mike Whitehead.
Because Affliction is not a licensed promoter in Nevada, Roy Englebrecht will serve as the promoter. Englebrecht was the promoter of record of the Banned card at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif.

Arlovski Confirms Barnett Showdown at Affliction

Arlovski Confirms Barnett Showdown at Affliction

Andrei Arlovski (Pictures) will have to wait at least one more bout before he gets his crack at the world?s No. 1 heavyweight.

The Belarusian bomber?s camp confirmed Monday that their 29-year-old star has agreed to face Josh Barnett (Pictures) at Affliction 2 ?Day of Reckoning? at the Thomas & Mack Center on Oct. 11 in Las Vegas. The headlining bout will determine a clear-cut challenger for Fedor Emelianenko (Pictures), who iced Tim Sylvia (Pictures) in a cool 36 seconds at the promotion?s inaugural July 19 ?Banned? event at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif.

Emelianenko, 31, earned the World Alliance of Mixed Martial Arts (WAMMA) heavyweight championship title for his speedy decimation of the No. 5 ranked Sylvia.

Contd...

Quinton ?Rampage? Jackson (Pictures) was smiling and joking Thursday in Minneapolis at a news conference to promote UFC 87.

The former UFC light heavyweight champion joined UFC President Dana White at the Mall of America, where Jackson made his first public comments since his July 15 arrest in Costa Mesa, Calif., on suspicion of felony evading, reckless driving and hit-and-run.

?I just wanted everybody to know I feel fine,? said Jackson, who was cheered -- the conference was open to the public -- when he stepped up to the microphone. ?Everybody goes through a little something. UFC?s got my back. I?m doing good.?

UFC 87 Discussion

We'll merge later...

Fight #1 Jason McDonald vs Demian Maia

Rd 1: Submission clinic...back and forth between the two. Good round.

Rd 2: Maia controlled until the last 15 seconds...his ground and pound sucks and McDonald did a great job on submission defense.

Rd 3: Maia wins with rear naked choke

Don't forget its free on channelsurfing.net...

Rd 1: Huerta was charging all round and Florian was countering. Florian got a good takedown and did a little work but not too much damage...

Rd2: Huerta is still charging relentlessly and Florian is still picking him apart. Right now, I'd score 2-0 Florian.

Rd 3: What a start...trading bombs...knees, kicks, punches. Great fight...Florian put on a clinic. Should be 30-27 Florian.

Unanimous decision Flora.
