Minnesota Golden Gophers

ScriptOhio

Everybody is somebody else's weirdo.
Minnesota expected to part ways with coach Richard Pitino after eight seasons with Gophers

Pitino will finish his tenure with a 141-123 overall record and two NCAA Tournament appearances

Adding a twist to the saga, Pitino's middling performance on the job has not precluded him from opportunities in the near future. Goodman additionally reported that Pitino is a finalist for the New Mexico job -- along with former Nebraska coach Tim Miles -- and that a decision from that program on who will fill the opening should be made in the coming days.

Minnesota coaching candidates: Porter Moser, Eric Musselman among best options to replace Richard Pitino

Porter Moser, Loyola Chicago head coach
Moser has accomplished just about everything there is to accomplish at Loyola Chicago. By leading the Ramblers back to the NCAA Tournament, he's proven the team's 2018 Final Four run was no fluke. It's a sustained, well-run program with four consecutive 20-win seasons to its credit, and Moser might be smart to hop on the coaching carousel while things are good. Perhaps Minnesota could work out a deal to bring Sister Jean as well....

Dennis Gates, Cleveland State head coach
Gates just guided Cleveland State to its second NCAA Tournament appearance since 1986 in only his second year on the job. The program had endured four straight losing seasons before his arrival, but Gates has shown enough quick wizardry to warrant consideration for a big-time gig. Something to love about Gates is that he spent 2011 through 2019 as a Florida State assistant under Leonard Hamilton. If the goal is to build a sustained winner at a program that lacks the tradition of others in the league -- and that's what Minnesota's goal should be -- then the Florida State blueprint is a good one to follow.

Just sayin': After January 25, 1972 I will never like a head coach named Musselman, especially at Minnesota. Eric's father is Bill Musselman.

Never understood why Minnesota fired Tubby Smith. They won 21 games and made the 2nd round of the tournament (which, by Minnesota's history a 2nd round NCAAT appearance is pretty good) the year they canned him. Pitino never fared any better in his 8 years.

"It is a great day for Lobo Basketball and for everyone who loves our program and our University," athletic director Eddie Nunez said in a statement announcing Pitino's hiring. "Richard Pitino is a proven winner with a track record of success on the court, including deep tournament runs and wins over nationally ranked programs, as well as proven success off the court by creating a tremendous student-athlete experience and supporting them as they earn their degrees."

As head coach Richard Pitino only got the Gophers into the NCAA Tournament twice and only won a total of 1 game: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Pitino

Is it possible that New Mexico thinks they're hiring his father i.e. Rick Pitino?....

Freshman, Mashburn Jr. transferring. Really thought he improved by the end of the year.

Sources: Minnesota Golden Gophers guard Marcus Carr enters transfer portal

Minnesota star Marcus Carr has entered the transfer portal, sources told ESPN.

Carr, a 6-foot-2 guard from Toronto, earned third-team All-Big Ten honors this season after averaging 19.4 points, 4.0 rebounds and 4.9 assists. He immediately becomes the most sought-after available transfer.

WTF, :mock:...they fire Richard Pitino and hire one of his former assistants.

Minnesota announced Monday that it is hiring Xavier assistant Ben Johnson, a former Gophers player and assistant, to replace Richard Pitino as the program's basketball coach. Johnson joined the Xavier staff in 2018 after working as an assistant for Pitino from 2013-18.

While on staff under Pitino, Johnson helped lead the Minnesota program to one of its best seasons in recent memory in 2016-17. That squad finished 24-10 (11-7 Big Ten) and made the NCAA Tournament as a No. 5 seed before losing in the first round.

Just sayin': I got a laugh out of this 2018 article. When Ben Johnson (who was an assistant coach) left Minnesota to be an assistant coach at Xavier it was a "step up".

Minnesota Basketball: Ben Johnson leaving Gopher staff for Xavier

Good for Coach Johnson as this is a step up in the basketball coaching ranks and best of luck to him at Xavier.
