Game Thread Minnesota at tOSU, Sat. Oct. 4th, 7:30 pm ET, NBC

These dudes are trying to beat Penn State at their own game.
(Whining about referees, I mean)
2015 14-28 - Night game at OSU. Gophers got ABSOLUTELY screwed by one of the worst reffing reversals you will ever see. OSU player launches crown-first into the face of Mitch Leidner's facemask on a play that resulted in a pick-6. The play was called correctly as targeting on the field but was REVERSED in the booth on a review - wiping the targeting call off the board and preserving the OSU touchdown in the process. Would the Gophers have won if that play had been called correctly? Perhaps unlikely but we'll never know. It was a very competitive game regardless.
I found that play. The OSU defender lowered his head but hit the QB with his hands, and didn't hit the QB in the head. I don't know why a flag was even thrown.

2018 14-30 - Day game at OSU. A couple MORE super questionable ref calls, particularly one with a terrible spot that preserved an OSU first down and allowed a drive to continue (that ended in a TD). Probably less likely to have been a win than the targeting reversal game, but again competitive and one of the early signs that Fleck may have had something building for 2019.
No way am I looking through this game to find a "terrible spot". The refs are human and getting the spot correct is probably tough. We can all think of a situation - maybe a bazillion of them - where the ref put the ball in the wrong spot.

2021 31-45 - The Thursday night opener for 2021. Such a downer to lose Mo Ibrahim under any circumstances, but particularly gut-wrenching to lose him on a night when he had been so dominant, and to an injury as serious as an Achilles. The OSU reffing posse showed up again late, wiping out another targeting call that would have made quite a difference. Again, perhaps not likely a win - but all chances of a win were wiped away with that call.
They're saying that Ibrahim's injury lost them the game. They were down 10 when he got hurt. I doubt that's their killer.
I'm not sure what their targeting complaint is. Heh - I bet that's it - 3:59 remaining... they may have a point there. But I think it's chest-to-shoulder contact first. He isn't lowering his head or launching. But I never know what the rule really is.

Presser Bullets: Phillip Daniels and Davison Igbinosun Give Ohio State “An Edge,” Ryan Day Says, and Buckeyes Will Stick With Brandon Inniss on Punt Return

  • y said that Ohio State cranked up the noise in practice to prepare for the crowd noise in Husky Stadium. "We had monster speakers out there and made it really loud and hard to communicate. ... We were able to handle the chaos of it. .... I thought our guys handled the environment well."
  • On Minnesota's run defense and the Gophers overall: "They historically have played very, very physical against the run and will continue to do that. ... They're well-coached and play really, really hard and have good players. ... It'll be a challenge."
  • On cornerback Davison Igbinosun: "There's a lot of growth. Davison has always had an edge to him ... a competitiveness... and he's aggressive. ... He had to learn technically what he needed to do to improve (at committing fewer penalties). ... He's gonna bring it every day. ... How you practice is how you play and he's a great example of that."
  • On what he's seen established about his team through four games: "You're seeing maturity. There's no way to see it other than that. ... To play the way that we've played up to this point shows maturity, and that was a big emphasis point for us this summer."
  • Day thought Sayin's throwaways were a sign of great decision-making. "We can live with 2nd-and-10, we can't live with 2nd-and-17. ... I liked the way he extended plays. ... That's all great teaching moments for somebody who's only had four starts. ... Great learning experiences for him, understanding how that works."
  • Day said he wants versatility in his roster spots, and as such, it's unlikely he'll roster a fullback. "I think you're seeing us play with a 'fullback' in the backfield, but we feel like that skillset can be handled by our tight end body types. ... It would be a consideration for sure, but I think the thing about it is, you have to bring versatility. ... If you're a tight end and you can only block ... or you can run routes but you can't block, you don't bring much value."
  • On Phillip Daniels: "He's made great progress. ... We love the intensity, we love the passion, we love how hard he plays. He gives us an edge. ... This will be a big week for him, playing against his old team. But the guys appreciate what he brings every day. He brings a work ethic and a toughness."
  • On the development of the 2022 class from guys like Caden Curry: "It's good to see them stick with it. ... A lot of doubt can set it. So you're seeing some of the guys who hung in there come out the back end. ... KJ played with great energy. ... Caden Curry, Caden is someone who's played a lot of football here ... but now he's a key contributor. ... If you hang in there and you just continue to put in work and keep resilience up, you're gonna get maximized."
  • Day said that Brandon Inniss needs to hold onto the ball, but the Buckeyes are sticking with him on punt return. "If Brandon didn't fumble that ball, I don't think anybody is asking that question. ... We're gonna get that fixed. ... That being said, I like the way he hit (that return). I liked the way he hit the one the previous game. ... Hang onto the ball, we're not having this conversation."
  • On Eddrick Houston not getting off to the start he or the team wanted: "The biggest thing is, keep putting one foot in front of the other, avoid all the distractions. ... Now more than ever, there's a lot of distractions. ... Staying focus throughout a whole practice, staying focused throughout a whole game ... is very, very important. ... When you're a young player, there's a lot of things you have to work through." Day added that "the game doesn't care about your families" and for a young player that's struggling, it's important to lean on friends, family and faith off the field.
  • On Bo Jackson's looks in the slot as a receiver: "Bo, when he was young, I thought he was gonna be a receiver ... he can do multiple things."
  • On Sonny Styles: "If he doesn't like something, he calls it out. ... He's very, very intelligent. ... You're seeing the different looks that our defensive staff is putting out there with the game plan. ... Because Sonny is in the middle of it all, it's working."
  • Rob Keys is heading up special teams for the Buckeyes but various position coaches and coordinators have units they help with. "Everybody is involved. What we do is we meet here Tuesday morning at 7 a.m. with everybody involved. ... We've got an army of people involved with special teams."
  • Day liked the coverage on Washington's field goal fake and Inniss' return before the fumble, but didn't like Washington's long kick return on special teams. "Special teams have to be an advantage for us.”
  • Aaron Scott Jr. has been the first player to the 30-yard line on kickoff coverage 13 times in a row, Day said. “Aaron Scott's gonna start playing more football around here.”
  • Ohio State's running back trio is developing, Day feels. "We need all of them, and I think they're all growing in different areas."
  • Day didn't like that kicker Jayden Fielding had to make a saving tackle on kick return, but appreciated the effort. "That's why the kickers are involved in everything we do, mat drills, the weight room. ... He got run over slow, but he got him down."

Curious where you found something that suggested to you: "The OSU defender lowered his head but hit the QB with his hands, and didn't hit the QB in the head. I don't know why a flag was even thrown."

From Your own "Land Grant Holy Land" account of the 2018 game:

"Now down 7-3, OSU went down the field to get their lead back— and nearly turned the ball over on downs in the process. After a facemask penalty on Minnesota spotted the Buckeyes a spot near midfield, two completions to Johnnie Dixon and a stuffed rush by Haskins put the Bucks at fourth-and-2. Urban Meyer and the staff decided to go for it, giving the ball to Weber on a stretch. It appeared that Weber was short, but the refs didn’t review the play."

Of course, the very next play was a 40 yard Ohio State touchdown. The point being made is the Gophers, when competitive, have had some controversial calls go against them that have taken their win probabilities from "unlikely" to "impossible". I know it is entertaining to pile on delusional opposing fans, but at least try to do it genuinely without cherry picking clips from a long post and taking stuff out of context.

Your angle looks worse than mine does:

It's the first play in that video, starting at about 8 seconds in.
I hadn't seen your angle, but this angle shows his left arm, which would have been hidden in your video.
The video is clearer than this screenshot, but you can see his left arm is making the contact to the quarterback before his helmet does.

This screenshot looks like the defender's helmet is hitting the quarterback's shoulder.

Your video is clearer than this one is, and probably should be used in determining the decision.

Another thought is that this is a different play. Was there another play that was intercepted and returned for a touchdown?

Oh - go to about 26 seconds in - there's a closer and slower shot. Slow Youtube down to 25%.

This is right after the helmet hits the QB's chest, which is after his left hand hits the QB. The defender's helmet seems to hit off the chest and bounce up to hit the QB's helmet. Compared to the rest of his body, the helmet doesn't get knocked back very much.

A third angle starts at about 29 second, and this one looks like the helmet moves forward compared to the shoulders upon initial impact.

I think we've all see worse hits not called, and lesser hits called for targeting.
