On the way westward, my sister and I stopped in Bob Dole's Kansas hometown. The motel there was filthy, and after the third room, we realized there weren't any that didn't have a rather obvious collection of spiders, silverfish, and flies present. No rooms anywhere else, though. Everything was filthy - we ended up taking the linens off the bed and using blankets I'd packed in the car, and deciding that it was more sanitary to skip a shower the next day than use those facilities. Luckily, driving until you can't drive any more makes for a decent night's sleep anyway.

Some nasty dive in Homestead, Florida. My friend walked down the street for a pack of cigarettes and the store clerk told him he should probably hurry up and get back to the hotel.
