So, of these, a chowder is most like a soup. Chili, however, is just that - chili. Why the compulsion to lump them all into one category?

I typed in "chili soup" with the quotation marks into google, and I only got 56,900 hits.

Personally, I say we apply the Seinfeld-test to determine if it is or is not a soup. The Seinfeld-test says soup is not a meal. However, we all know that chili is a meal. Therefore, chili is not a soup.

Wait a minute - you all missed something here. If the lunch lady says it, it must be true...

Actually, I have to rule with the "chili isn't soup" contingent here. Soup, to me, requires a broth or cream base of some sort.

I also heartily agree that you can't beat grilled cheese & tomato soup. And pretty much any form of cheese soup is good by me.

Overall favorite has to be lobster bisque, though.
