I've got a dad currently serving in Iraq, I figure that is enough stress on my mother for the time being...... :(
how many Dads do you have??? :tongue2:

SIMV...actually, if are on active duty, all of your creditors would cut your % rate down conciderably....some of it might even be interest free. Plus you get paid and wouldn't be able to spend as much of it.

SIMV is right, you can go to basic the summer of your junior year, then serve out your time after you graduate.

I was unaware enlistment is at an alltime high, but if thats true, its not because everyone wants to be in. The army is in dire need. They are now offering up to FORTY THOUSAND DOLLAR SIGN-ON BONUS' for certain MOS'

Also the re-up bonus' are sky high as well, one of my buddies is being offered EIGHTEEN THOUSAND, AND CHOICE OF DUTY STATION to re-up.

The downside to that is that jobs like mine which arent combat oriented are being done away with, and replaced by civilians so that the soldiers we do have can be used exclusively for war fighting.

It is definitely not the most attractive option out there right now. I love my country, freedom, etc... but i know a few people who joined several years ago, to take advantage of the free education, not realizing that they would be in the fight of their (our) lives. I honor, respect, and appreciate everyone who actually has the balsac to join, enlist, whatever you call it. I just will not be one of the however many Americans freely signing up. I also will never take my freedom for granted and if I am called to duty, I won't be late. Since that situation has not presented itself, I shudder to think how many lives are wasted to prove a point that is (so far) going by the wayside. I despise politics and usually come across someone who knows a lot more than I do about it, so I am gonna leave it to the rest of you. God Bless

i tried to join out of high school but was turned away due to medical reasons. i seriously considered a civilian position in iraq and did put in for a job with a company setting up communication networks. but i don't have enough experience in that field so no job for me. you put the deciminal point in the correct place after the 1, ill pack my stuff today.

I always dreamed of being a fighter pilot. However, my vision sucks.

I feel the reason the enlistment is down, is because many people don't believe in this war. Back in WWII, guys were joining, because it was a war where we were attacked by a specific enemy. Everyone knew whom we were fighting, and why.

If America was attacked by another nation, I would be first in line to sign up.

A kid from my high school died in Iraq two weeks ago. I think I'll take a pass on this one.

Gee, too bad the fact someone in the military may actually have to die for the country is such an inconvenience to some. It's a good thing there weren't as many who thought like you back in 1941... :roll1:

It didn't much matter what they thought back in 1941, as there was a draft to ensure that there were enough boots on the ground.

OB... I don't want to get into a conversation (or debate) that should be moved to the Political Forum, but you don't think we are at war in defense? Remember... we were attacked. Period. Maybe not by another nation, but we WERE attacked.

Considering the fact that my field of expertise is molecular mechanisms of disease... something tells me the military wouldn't be too likely to throw me in a tank and tell me to go blow shit up (of course, there's also the fact that I wouldn't fit in a tank too well, either.)

I'm getting to the point where it's time to start considering where to look for post-doc appointments, and I've had a few brief dialogs with some people in army research...

I know it's in no way comparable to taking up arms for my country, but maybe by providing support to the troops in this way, I could at least do something for my country. Every little bit helps, right?
