Mike Vick (Pittsburgh Steelers)

I want to know why this has turned into a race issue, instead of an ethical or moral issue? And I also want to know when did everybody conveniently forget Mike was a below average passer, and assume just because he can run, he should be on the top of everybody's list.

You make the mistake of thinking logically. The Vick supporters do no such thing. He isn't a quarterback to them - he's a symbol.

They didn't give a [censored] how the Falcons did when he played for our team. They were there because the street had come to the most cerebral and celebrated position in all of team sports. For a while, lil homie on the corner was on top of the world. Turning heads and selling jerseys with hordes of sponsors salivating. "Suck on this for awhile you suits - our man is tearing it up and doing thangs that Peyton and Brady can't even come close to doing."

But then 13-3 quickly became 8-8 and then 7-9. All of a sudden, when teams were more dedicated in their preparation - Vick's intensity didn't mirror their efforts. He spent little to no time in the film room and after establishing the best rushing attack in the NFL, Jim Mora and Greg Knapp threw their hands up in dismay and wondered (aloud at times) how can we make this playbook any simpler? Alge got old, Perless got old, Warrick got brittle, Brooking got old, DeAngelo lost his mind and just as quickly as it opened, a window was closed. Que sera, sera.

But it was never his fault you see. "Mora cain't coach nobody," "Dat offense ain't right, gotta get him out the pocket," "Arthur Blank done him wrong when he ain't signed him no lineman," "Where Mike Vick weapons at? Manning got weapons -where Mike Vick's? I see how it is..." and on and on it went.

So when a sordid (and silent) past caught up to him, it wasn't the law that took him down - it was the haters.
They (directed at whites) just can't stand the thought of a black man at quarterback. "They talkin' bout dogs and we talkin' bout a man...how can you do this to him?" Legal standing meant nothing, the law was racist. The government was racist. Sports talk radio was racist. Arthur Blank was racist. Falcons fans were racist. It was all a plot you see.

In the highly anticipated (and highly embarassing) ESPN townhall meeting - a Vick fan actually had the nerve (or complete lack of sense) to stand up and ask to a group of lifelong journalists and a couple ex-NFL players "Do you think it's fair that Bill Belichek just got fined for what he did and Mike Vick is facing jail time?" She actually said this.
The response came alarmingly quick: "You do realize that one person broke an NFL league rule and the other committed multiple federal crimes?" The boos rained down - the journalists were racists and the cycle repeats itself.

Good luck to you Eagles. You've aquired a massive weapon that if unleashed can be simply terrifying to try and contain.
But you also have a new element to your fan base - one that you can't prepare for and can't argue with. It'll never be enough for them, no matter what efforts you make.

you know, after seeing ESPN's "coverage" of all of the fat lesbians and hippie-PETA types during the day today, I really actually do kind of hope he's somewhat effective for a couple of reasons.

1) and the most personal to me - those frickin idiots protesting vick couldn't even spell the name MICHAEL right. :smash: I saw Michale and Michel on different signs.

2) The opportunity to set PETA freaks against one of the stronger segment of Philly fans is going to be awesome

3) While I usually don't like Pennsylvania teams, I've always at least followed the Philly teams a bit (not the 76ers though, the NBA isn't my thing).

[RANT]This is why I hate PETA sometimes. What does protesting Vick do positive for animals? He's already spent quite a bit of time in jail and is no longer doing anything to harm animals. I'd understand if he was going on the field to ritually slaughter puppies, but he's not, he's just trying to be a proffesional and do his job. At this point they're just attacking Vick as a person, which does nothing to advance the ethical treatment of animals. He's learned his lesson, he's not going to get into dog fighting again so they're really doing nothing except wasting they're time, and trying my (and I'd imagine quite a few other people's) patience.[/RANT]

You're correct, PETA cares about PETA and that is it. During my vegan days, I was actually part of anti-PETA protests, they have an agenda and that's making themselves more important. While I do not condone what Vick did and made me lose all respect for him. An employer made a choice of allowing a person with a criminal background to play again, good for him. That is between the commish and Vick. It's not like he's in charge of a bunch of kids. He's an athlete. This shouldn't even be an issue in my book.

It's because you like to go out to bars and call yourself Ron Mexico.

I actually think it's because I hate PETA. Mike Vick > PETA.

Stat line tonight.. 1/4, -5 yards, INT. But he does have a rushing TD (4 carries, 9 yards). If he keeps this up, is there any chance he doesn't even make the team? (He's going to, but it's an interesting thought)
