Mike Vick (Pittsburgh Steelers)

Article from the day before:

Enough already: Give Vick a second chance

Maybe 11 weeks away from work has made me soft, but I don't see why everyone is dissecting every word Michael Vick says. Is he sorry, really sorry, he executed those dogs, people want to know, and if he is, why isn't he communicating that better? Why doesn't he just say, "Man, I have nightmares about those little puppies, and I'm so sorry I bludgeoned them to death."
Take yesterday, for example. Vick spoke to about 200 freshmen at a Hunting Park high school in a joint appearance with the head of the Humane Society of the United States. He told the kids to listen to their parents, use their teachers as role models, and be leaders and not followers. He told the story about how he lost everything because of his "foolish" decision to fight dogs, and how sorry he was that he messed up his life as a result.
But he didn't apologize for killing the dogs. He said he "didn't choose to go the right way, which led to 18 months of being in prison," something he called "the toughest time in my life."
"I wish I could take it all back, because I did so many things that was wrong and was influenced by so many people," Vick added.
To some people, that wasn't enough. He sounded too rehearsed. There wasn't enough contrition. He seemed sorry only that he got caught, not sorry for what he did. And his partnership with the Humane Society looked only like a partnership of convenience, a vehicle for Vick to rehabilitate his beleaguered image and regain entry into the National Football League.
That could all be true, but at this point, what is more important is that Vick has learned his lesson, knows now that fighting dogs is wrong and won't do it again. If the reason he won't is because he's afraid of losing what he has, well, so be it. Isn't the goal to save dogs, not hurt them?
I had an opportunity to watch this Vick saga unfold from afar, and it was fascinating how people tried to make Vick into who they wanted him to be. Some wanted him to be articulate and remorseful, to prove he was really sorry for doing something that was a part of his life since he was a child. Some wanted him essentially to disavow everything he knew, and to express regret. And when he didn't do it to people's satisfaction, they crucified him.
Fighting dogs is a vile, repugnant activity. It's morally reprehensible. It's disgusting to think that Vick actually enjoyed watching two dogs tear each other to shreds. How he viewed that as entertainment, not to mention a sport (as Vick said he viewed it at the time), is incomprehensible.
But Vick paid his debt to society. He served his 18 months in federal prison and lost just about everything, including an astronomical amount of money. He deserves a second chance. And if he's unable to eloquently articulate his remorse, that's OK, too, as long as he doesn't take another dog's life.

I never have been a Vick fan and never will be; however, he

1. did admit his guilt
2. paid his debt to society
3. and seems sincerely remorseful

He deserves a 2nd chance. :)

David Jacobs claims he was Michael Vick's steroid supplier - Sports Pros(e)
The Dallas Morning News reports today that steroids trafficker David Jacobs told the paper he supplied Michael Vick with performance-enhancing drugs when Vick was a member of the Atlanta Falcons.

Jacobs, who committed suicide in 2008, was sharing information with the NFL about steroids users until his death.

The News did not release this information because authorities wouldn't confirm that Vick was part of their investigation. Recently, word broke that the feds had quizzed Vick on the matter, thus giving the paper cause to run the story.

What a crock of BS. Does everyone want to take a shot at celebrities? Vick seems truly reborn as a person. I hate that humans are so quick to resurface the past rather than look towards the bright future ahead.

I'll take a shot at celebrities who torture and electrocute defenseless animals. May he rot in hell for that.

Oh, yeah, he's a saint now. Hadn't you heard?

Oops! Am I piling on this penitent, redeemed being? Well, I'm not buying his act. There are few things I loathe more than jailhouse conversions. Loathe...and disbelieve.

If you actually possess the character to regret your choices & seek another path, then freakin' do it BEFORE your @$$ is occupying the cot in a 6' X 8' cell; do it while under no other pressure than the compunction of your own conscience; do it, unseen to any other person, because you understand the harm you are causing and choose to stop.

I don't care what Vick has lost or suffered as a result of his choices--he deserved to lose a lot. He was, after all, not some poor schmuck mired in poverty, void of resources or luck. He was one of the rare few in the world with the wealth and connections and freedom to do anything with his time that he could imagine--limited only by his will and creativity--and the best thing he could imagine was the torture of captive animals for "sport".

He can mouth all the hollow apologies he likes. Personally, I'm not that hard up for heroes.

Shooting at Vick's 30th Birthday party. One of his partners in the dogfighting ring was shot.

1. Any ideas that he's distanced himself from the bad element that used to bring him down should now be put to rest.

2. Apparently DeAngelo Hall was there too - he tried to tackle the shooter but whiffed and let him get away. He then called Steve Smith a pussy.

:shake:

It was his 30th birthday and he's still making brilliant choices like celebrating it at a bar. Nice.

Can I go ahead and draft him for the celebrity death pool now? No way this clown makes it. In about 5 years when he's of no use to the world because he can't play football anymore the hangers on will walk away, Vick will still be stupid and now it appears he's got people from inside his little world of charmers wishing him ill.

Good luck moron, maybe your little brother will be there to help.

With apologies to ScriptOhio, a slight updating of your post, circa July, 2010:

Enough already: Give Vick a third...uh, a fourth...uh, infinite chances

I am a devout Vick hatah and will continue to be; moreover, he

1. lied about his whereabouts during the recent shooting of his dog fighting co-defendant
2. charged his "guests" $$ for admission to his birthday party questionably located at a night club
3. and seems sincerely remorseful that he has imbecilically jammed his own @$$ into the wringer, yet again.

He deserves anything that happens to him. :grr:
