Mike Vick (Pittsburgh Steelers)

Claiming $10M-50M in debt, Vick seeks bankruptcy protection

RICHMOND, Va. -- Imprisoned quarterback Michael Vick filed for bankruptcy protection while serving time for federal dogfighting charges, saying he owes between $10 million and $50 million to creditors.
Vick filed Chapter 11 papers in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Newport News on Monday. The seven largest creditors listed in the court papers are owed a total of about $12.8 million.
The suspended Atlanta Falcons quarterback hopes he "can, after the conclusion of the bankruptcy case, rebuild his life on a personal and spiritual level, resurrect his image as a public figure, and resolve matters with the NFL such that he can resume his career," according to the filings.
Vick is serving a 23-month prison sentence at the U.S. Penitentiary in Leavenworth, Kan., after pleading guilty last year to bankrolling a dogfighting ring. He was subsequently suspended indefinitely without pay and lost all his major sponsors, including Nike. He also faces state charges related to dogfighting.
The debt includes part of a signing bonus that the Falcons are seeking to recover.
After the plea on dogfighting charges, the Falcons tried to recover about $20 million in bonuses Vick earned from 2004 to 2007. But a federal judge held that Vick is entitled to keep all but $3.75 million of the money paid to him for playing football through the 2014 season.
According to the filings, Vick's other debts include $4.5 million owed to Richmond-based Joel Enterprises Inc., and $550,0000 owed to Radtke Sports Inc. for breach of contract.
In May, a federal judge ordered Vick to repay about $2.5 million to a Canadian bank for defaulting on a loan. The Royal Bank of Canada had sued Vick in September, arguing his guilty plea to a federal dogfighting charge -- and the resulting impact on his career -- prevented him from repaying the loan.
A default judgment for $1.08 million also was entered in January against Vick and a business partner in a lawsuit brought by Wachovia Bank over a loan for an Atlanta-area wine shop and restaurant.

The big news, I suppose, from my talk with Huyghue was this: He said the chances of a UFL team signing Michael Vick to play the 2009 season are "98 percent.'' Strange percentage, but that's what he said.

"Michael's not going to be able to walk right back into the NFL,'' Huyghue said.

"He's going to need some kind of buffer before he signs in the NFL, and we'll be able to provide that for him.''

Assuming the league gets off the ground, it makes perfect sense. Vick is due to get out of federal prison in July 2009, and in all likelihood he'll be suspended for the 2009 season by the NFL, which would also make him ineligible for the Canadian Football League. If the UFL is Triple-A football, or even Double-A, it's probably Vick's best option.

In Virginia facing state dogfighting charges, Vick's involvement revealed

Michael Vick, arriving to federal court in August 2007, is isolated at the Riverside Regional Jail in Virginia to avoid disruptions.

Suspended Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick placed family pet dogs into a ring and his trained pit bulls "caused major injuries" to the pets at Bad Newz Kennels, according to a U.S. Department of Agriculture report released on Friday.
The 17-page report, prepared by the USDA's inspector general-investigations division, provided some new details on Vick's participation in Bad Newz Kennels, the dogfighting operation financed by Vick and formed along with his friends Tony Taylor, Purnell Peace and Quanis Phillips.
The report, dated Aug. 28, 2008, says "Vick, Peace and Phillips thought it was funny to watch the pit bull dogs belonging to Bad Newz Kennels injure or kill the other dogs." The report has names and phrases redacted in order to protect the anonymity of certain individuals who cooperated with investigators.
The report also states in mid-April of 2007, Vick, Peace and Phillips hung approximately three dogs that did not perform well in a "rolling session," which indicates the readiness of a dog to fight. According to the report, the three men hung the dogs "by placing a nylon cord over a 2 X 4 that was nailed to two trees located next to the big shed. They also drowned approximately three dogs by putting the dogs' heads in a five gallon bucket of water."
Vick, the report says, paid someone whose name was redacted $100 to dig two graves for the dog carcasses. "Based on past circumstances," the report says, "Phillips and Peace did not like [Vick] to do any type of work that could injure him and jeopardize his NFL contract." When the person who dug the graves refused to bury the animals, the report says, Vick, Peace and Phillips buried the dogs themselves.
Vick is serving a 23 month sentence in a minimum security federal prison camp in Leavenworth, Kan., on a conspiracy charge relating to the interstate dogfighting operation he helped run on a property he owned in Surry County, Virginia. Vick is scheduled to be released on July 20, 2009.
Vick is currently being held in protective custody at Riverside Regional Jail in Hopewell, Va., until his hearing on Tuesday in Surry County Circuit Court to plead guilty to two state charges related to dogfighting. The state charges -- one count of torturing and killing dogs and one count of promoting dogfighting -- each carry a maximum prison term of five years. But under the terms of his plea agreement, Vick is expected to receive a three-year suspended prison term and a $2,500 fine (which would be suspended if he pays court costs and maintains good behavior for four years).
By resolving the pending state charges, Vick would qualify to participate in the Federal Bureau of Prisons re-entry program, which could enable him to serve part of the remainder of his federal sentence in a halfway house.
According to the Bureau of Prisons, in 2007, for inmates who qualified, the average length of their time served at a halfway house was three months.

Vick enters guilty plea to state dogfighting charges

SUSSEX, Va. -- Former NFL quarterback Michael Vick pleaded guilty Tuesday to a state dogfighting charge, a necessary step to make him eligible for early release from prison and potentially speed a return to the NFL.
Vick, 28, pleaded guilty to one charge and not guilty to a second count that was then dropped. The former Atlanta Falcons star was given a three-year suspended sentence.
"I want to apologize to the court, my family, and to all the kids who looked up to me as a role model," Vick told the judge. He had arrived under police escort in wrist and ankle shackles and a gray suit, but the restraints were removed for the hearing.

There was a great program called "Dog-Town" that chronicled the development of several badly injured and abused dogs from Bad Newz Kennelz.

The abuse was sickening. One of the dogs would just crawl into a ball and stay as still as possible when humans were close. It took a month just to get the dog to move a couple of feet for a treat. Apparently he was a bait dog used to train puppy pit bulls to fight. He was so used to humans pulling him out of a cage to get mauled by other dogs, he'd cower in terror whenever a human was close.

Mike Vick will forever be an asshole to me.

I've been a Dallas Cowboys fan since 1972. Jerry Jones has tested my loyalty over the years but I've still been a fan of the team. I guess it really is tough to teach an old dog new tricks but childhood loves die hard.

That said, if Jerry signs this dirtbag - if he's even eligible to play - I will wash my hands of his team. It will be difficult after all these years, but it'll be the last straw. I'll find someone new to support.

The fact that I even think it's a possibility disgusts me. Don't even fucking do it, Jerry.

That's actually a really good article. You can read it here. I'm happy that so many of the dogs could be saved.

You clearly are a racist. Don't you know? What happened to Mike Vick happened because he was black - breaking multiple federal and state laws had nothing to do with it.

Clearly the Federal government wanted a white quarterback in Atlanta and Arthur Blank is a racist too. Blank made all that money off of Vick and let turned his back on him as soon as he lied to him 3 times, tested positive for drugs, flicked off his paying fans, consistently underperformed and committed multiple felonies.

GOOD THING CHANGE IS COMIN' TO AMERICA ON JAN 20TH 2009! LOL white people, rednecks, harf harf harf!!!11

I've just paraphrased the argument that every black falcons fans has been making for the past 18 months. What a town eh?

Vick OK'd for home confinement, official says

QB could be released to house May 21, will have electronic monitoring

Vick's lawyers have said they expected him to be moved any day into a halfway house in Newport News. But because of a lack of space, Vick will be released instead to his Hampton home at some point on or after May 21, said the official, who has knowledge of the case but requested anonymity because the individual was not authorized to discuss the matter publicly.

Well, it won't be to his Duluth, Georgia home. :slappy:
