Michigan ineligible player in PSU game

ESPN mentioned yesterday something about having an eligible player for the Northwestern game. Anyone else heard about this?

Yeah, it was discussed on the michigan thread. seems to be an ineligable player on special teams during all of the first 4 games. Big Ten will hand out punishment this week.

On one hand, I want them fat & happy when we go to Ann Arbor--on the other, some days it just falls in your lap! :tongue2:

I love the hypocricy of some scUM fans. They made a huge stink on some of their boards about Henton being allowed to practice, but when this came up, it was no big deal.:roll1:

Henton was suspended for a still-alleged non-football incident. The special teams player for Michigan wasn't even supposed to be on the field...in other words he was an illegal participant, which is a huge difference.

Come on everybody, say it with me: "Fuck Michigan!"...

I agree. Let's make this simple.

Consider the high school game - each league has their own rules about eligibility. Those rules may be stiffer or weaker in one league than in another league, but, they are the rules by which everyone abides.
If a High School team in league play uses an ineligible player, what is a standard punishment?
Loss of that game from your record.

True though it is that the Big Ten rules are stiffer than the NCAA rules, it was a Big Ten game at question vs. Penn State, so, the Big Ten rules should apply.

If the Big Ten doesn't void Michigan's win over Penn State would they not then be sending entirely the wrong message?

U-M freshman DB ineligible for season because of Penn State game

September 30, 2007
Michigan freshman defensive back Artis Chambers will not play again this season because of an eligibility issue.
Michigan freshman defensive back Artis Chambers will not play again this season because of an eligibility issue.
Athletic director Bill Martin made the announcement at halftime of Saturday's game against Northwestern, saying the issue was the fault of his department, not coach Lloyd Carr.
Any potential sanctions are still to be determined, but Martin said he didn't expect the situation to affect the nonconference games, only the Penn State game.
"We've had a misinterpretation of the Big Ten freshman-eligibility rules," Martin said, referring to Chambers' status as a second-semester enrollee last January. "We found this out Thursday afternoon. He is no longer going to be a part of the (active) team for the rest of the year. He was eligible under NCAA rules, not Big Ten rules."
Martin said Chambers, a reserve from Ft. Wayne, Ind., who played the first four games on special teams, may practice with the team but cannot play in games.
Martin could not be more specific about the eligibility issue because of federal privacy rules. He wouldn't address whether it was an academic situation.
"We'll have to wait and see what the Big Ten says," Martin said. "I can't rule anything out (sanction-wise). I would think we'll get resolution sometime this week."
Chambers will remain in school.
The rules "are a little arcane, and we simply misapplied an older version of the rules," Martin said.
Carr called the situation a "real disappointment" but declined to elaborate.

PSU Football: Big Ten looking at status of player
Michigan could lose victory vs. Penn State
Monday, October 01, 2007
By Ron Musselman, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
Michigan's 14-9 victory against Penn State two weeks ago is under review.
There is a possibility the Wolverines might have to forfeit their Big Ten Conference win against the Nittany Lions because they used an ineligible player.
Artis Chambers, a freshman safety who enrolled at Michigan in January, played on special teams in each of the first four games. He had one tackle against Penn State on Sept. 22 at Michigan Stadium.

This could set up a really unusual situation in which the B11 regards the PSU game as a Michigan loss, while the NCAA regards it as a Michigan win. My understanding is that the player's ineligibility is a conference issue rather than an NCAA issue. Could be a confusing situation, record-wise.

Yep but because of that is exactly why the Big10 will not make them forfiet the game. It'll be another smack on the wrist of tsun.
