Michigan Coaching Speculation

Confirmation: LSU extends Miles' contract through '12

BATON ROUGE, La. -- LSU coach Les Miles has signed a contract extension that will keep him with the Tigers through 2012.

The deal was approved Thursday by the LSU board's athletic committee, apparently ending any chance of Miles leaving for Michigan to replace Lloyd Carr, who retired last month. The approval of the full board is needed, but that is considered a formality when the board meets Friday.

Michigan Has Reached Out To Ball State's Hoke

Wolverines have talked to former Michigan assistant about open head coach position

Dec. 6, 2007

Some quick updates on some of thecoaching vacancies around the country.

-- Michigan has indeed reached out to Brady Hoke from Ball State and Hoke has talked to Michigan AD Bill Martin, but the talks have not been substantial.

-- Keep an eye on the NFL's Sean Payton as a darkhorse at Michigan. He is gaining support and has college coaching background at Illinois and Miami (Ohio), among others.

And the plot thickens.

Hey Allison, there is a State Penn fan here who was wondering if you had a pic you could contribute to this thread. Thanks.

That's older news. This is a bit more interesting.

Schiano meets with Michigan over coaching vacancy

Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano met with Michigan athletic director Bill Martin "for quite a while" to discuss the Big Ten school's coaching vacancy during the annual College Football Hall of Fame Banquet in New York City on Tuesday, according to a person who speaks regularly with Schiano.

Though no official offer has been made, according to the person, one could be forthcoming.

Michigan has yet to seek formal permission to speak with Schiano, but athletic director Bob Mulcahy said Schiano's agent, Bryan Harlan, "asked for permission to meet" with Martin.

I would prefer Miles since he already knows how to lose to JT.
I'd almost prefer Miles too, just to see if you guys get overconfident about beating him based on a game against fearsome national superpower Oklahoma State. But there's a slightly more important game yet to be played. And anyway, I don't know what the hell actually went down last weekend with Miles, but Schiano represents the risk that Michigan has apparently been afraid to take - for that reason alone he's appealing. Half the coaches in the league could contend for the national title at LSU. Doing it at Rutgers, now that's something.

So what happened to Martin doing this "by the book"? Sounds like he's talked to Schiano without seeking permission from the Rutger's AD. Ehh, just semantics I guess. Anyway, I don't pretend to understand Michigan fans' fascination with Miles, but personally I'd say Schiano is a MUCH better choice for UM head coach. PSU fans will be jumping from whatever ledge they can find. I might just swing by their boards to see the melt down in it's early stages. Usually don't care much for the train wrecks, but this has the potential to be "epic".
