Michigan Coaches go running for Pros

Jax - consider this from the NFL Combine invitation list

NFL Combine LIST

Michigan Invitees

<table align="right" border="0" cellpadding="1" cellspacing="1" height="85" width="521"> <tbody><tr class="bg3" valign="top"><td>Avant, Jason</td><td>Michigan</td><td>WR</td></tr> <tr class="bg3" valign="top"><td>Massaquoi, Tim</td><td>Michigan</td><td>TE</td></tr> <tr class="bg3" valign="top"><td>Stenavich, Adam</td><td>Michigan</td><td>OL</td></tr> <tr class="bg3" valign="top"><td>Watson, Gabe</td><td>Michigan</td><td>DL</td></tr></tbody></table>
Fact is - one player from the D - not in a skill position. No LBs, no DBs.

Notable absentees, Woods, McLintock, Mason.

By contrast, the number of Ohio State invitees - 12, 8 on Defense; Miami (FL) 11 Invitees, 7 on D; Georgia 8 invitees, 4 on D; FSU 14 Invitees, 9 on D; PSU 7 Invitees, 6 from their D.

Weakness on UM's D - absolutely no doubt.

I asked my scUM argueing buddy his thoughts on it, he gave me what I considered to be a solid response...

Michigan will be fine with the cb recruits. I’ve read rumors allen may already be a soft verbal, he’s also good friends with a couple other Mi players already (morgan trent for one). Johnson’s teammate Taylor is already on Mi and it prob between Mi and ND for Johnson. Considering our depth chart Mi has the advantage with ND landing a couple solid cbs last year. Not to mention there is a db in south Carolina who is also considered a mi lean (a recruit mi got this year, patterson, was his teammate and their coach likes Michigan). I worry about Mi landing Ryan Mallett, who was considered a Mi lean, he is buddies with Loeffler(calls lefty once a week to talk football, he's the #2 rated qb next year), if Loeffler leaves, Mallett might go elsewhere as well. Again this isn’t such a huge concern because there is no depth behind Henne(in terms of highly rated recruits), so Mi can sell their depth chart and ability to produce pro qbs. There is a highly rated guy in penn who Mi can recruit. Things will be fine short term. The problem I have is long term, I can’t stand Carr sticking with his buddies rather than moving young coaching talent up or getting young coordinators from around the country in a national search. soooo….

….on to the coaching changes, I am pretty much ready to blow, I’m so upset over the changes. For lefty to get passed over for Debord is really beyond me. The rumors, that I was angered with but could at least stomach was that lefty would be named Co-Offensive coordinator with Debord. Debord is Carr’s best friend and Carr is trying to line him up as his replacement. He was terrible as a head coach at CMU, his offense was mediocre, the guy he is replacing(Malone) had a much better offense, our special teams were mediocre last year if not poor the only thing saving them was breastons return ability. I just don’t understand what makes him a better candidate as an offensive coordinator when they compare him to 30 year old loeffler who is far and away our best recruiter if not one of the best in the country, he’s already been offered pro jobs and now it looks like getting passed over might push him to a position with New England. This doesn’t bother me as much since pro experience can only help his chances when Lloyd retires, not to mention working with the Patriots, Brady and Belichick, that can only help him to improve as a coach/future head coaching candidate. English was the other rising coordinator and other than lefty our next best recruiter, it’s thought he tried to use the Bears offer to leverage Carr to give him the defensive coordinator position, but Carr didn’t want to fire Hermann so it looks like English is gone. I keep reading that Hermann is still out as Defensive Coordinator, he just has to find another job or take a demotion. Basically this is the problem I have with Carr/the program. They are stuck in the 70’s, promoting from within rather than taking a national search to find the best replacements. Lloyd is surrounding himself with his buddies. Cronyism is alive and well. Michigan will still have a solid team regardless of the changes, I just think it jeopardized the future of the program. If Debord or Hermann becomes head coach when Lloyd retires, I may become a former Michigan fan.

Wrestler-

No offense to your buddy but thats exactly the type of whistling past the graveyard mindset the scUMers are in.

Let me summize: "We're just going to go snatch a few high profile DB's next year(like there are any sure things in recruiting) and everything should be ok. Now on to whats important...Brady...QB...NFL...Carr...loads of talent...cant develop it...we're still a good team..." you get the point.

The lack of attention to the underlying cause of their defensive woes is absolutely institutionilized up there from the HC on down to the fans. They all want to hang the DC, when the real problem is a fundamental lack of adapting to the way the game is played in the 21st century.

Their O is still basically a big, pwer I, throw deep off play action type team and their defense is still built to stop that type of attack. They spread it some and run a lot of screens and reverses but they have always done that.

Successful teams have figured out that that you need versatile, fast, athletic kids who can play in space and that you better have enough of them to play nickel and dime packages extensively. If you are having issues in this department recruiting 2 DB's isn't showing the world you have a real grasp of the situation imo.

scUM is the sterotypical B10 team and still recruits that way, right up untill this most recent class. They are digging the type of hole that takes a recruiting philosophy overhaul and a couple of great classes to recover from. In other words the type of hole to which there is no quick fix.

IMO we not only are going to enjoy a bad times for scUM untill IVoyd hangs em up, we are assured of a couple of fun years immediatley after as well. If they make the new HC a Carr clone with the same philosophies.....we could more than make up for the Cooper years.

If this turns out to be true, then I guess I'll finally be on the Fire Lloyd bandwagon.. English and Loeffler deserved to be promoted.

This is what I am seeing. The true UM fan is done...just freeken done with Lloyd. Between the coaches they lost, and the ones they retained the worm has turned for Michigan fans. I used to think the firelloydcarr.com were the crackpots. Now sacking him is being backed and supported by the level headed posters that I respect.

I have posted this before, but the only question I have now is who will be done first...George W or LC? I see an asst AD in his future very very soon. This is just the type of groundswell that got Coop the ax.

I wonder if this had anything to do with jai eugene decommitting and signing with LSU a couple days before signing day

maybe English let him know he might not be around

Now it seems English is back on board in AA.

(Whatever is all I can say at this point, the reference to English becoming the sole Defensive co-ordinator may or may not be pure and complete speculation).

LINK

Sources close to the situation say Ron English he has decided to stay at the University of Michigan and will be named defensive coordinator. He has spent the past three seasons as the Wolverines secondary coach.

When it appeared English would only be offered the co-coordinator job, he decided to take the position with the Bears. After English accepted the job on Friday, Michigan came back at him over the weekend with the opportunity to take sole command of the defense. It proved to be an offer he couldn’t refuse.

Along with the Bears, the Detroit Lions and Tampa Bay Buccaneers both expressed interest in adding English to their coaching staff. There were also at least two Pac-10 teams that inquired about his services.

The Bears interviewed St. Louis Rams assistant secondary coach Gill Byrd last week before offering the job to English. He could now become the top candidate to fill the vacancy left by Perry Fewell taking the defensive coordinator position with the Buffalo Bills.

Stay tuned to BearReport.com for further details on this developing story.

Notably, there is no press release on MGOBlue concerning English' instatement as their new DC.

Here is the latest from the Detroit Free Press - still no public confirmation from scUM on English' position, certainly he is returning, with Herrman likely thrown under the bus.

Herrmann out as Michigan defense coach

Future unclear as English takes over

</td> </tr> </tbody> </table> <!-- end photo/facts --><!-- story text --> <!-- story text --> Michigan is replacing defensive coordinator Jim Herrmann with Ron English, who had just left the team for the NFL.
English, U-M's secondary coach the past three seasons, was hired Tuesday to coach the Chicago Bears' defensive backs. But the Bears said Thursday that he "backed out of the position" and was "expected to be named Michigan's defensive coordinator."
A U-M source confirmed that English would get the job. Media relations director Bruce Madej would say only that "we will confirm that Ron English is returning."
Herrmann's future is unclear. He has been at U-M as a graduate assistant or full-time coach for 20 years and was defensive coordinator when the Wolverines won the 1997 national championship. Michigan led the nation in total defense and scoring defense that season. But the defense hasn't been as strong in recent years, and Herrmann, 45, has come under criticism.
The hiring of English means Michigan has replaced its offensive and defensive coordinators in one week. Offensive coordinator Terry Malone went to the New Orleans Saints last week, and U-M assistant Mike DeBord succeeded him. Michigan is coming off a 7-5 season, its worst since 1984.
English, 37, is considered a top recruiter and helped develop two defensive backs who became All-Americas in 2004 -- Marlin Jackson and Ernest Shazor. After they left, U-M ranked second in the Big Ten in pass defense last season.
On multiple occasions this week, English said he was leaving for the Bears to improve his career, hoping to become a coordinator in college or the pros. Apparently, it just happened sooner than he thought.
MSU HIRES ENOS: The last time Michigan State won a Big Ten championship, Dan Enos was the quarterback. Now Enos is back as the team's quarterbacks coach, replacing Doug Nussmeier, who left for a similar position with the St. Louis Rams. Enos, 37, was quarterbacks coach at Cincinnati the past two seasons and worked for three years at Western Michigan in the same role. Enos, who starred in high school at Dearborn Edsel Ford, played at MSU in 1987-90.
"From the moment I became a collegiate football player, I wanted to be a college football coach," he said. "My goal was to eventually come back here and coach the quarterbacks."

I understand that English is a great recruiter, so nothing will change there, but what has he done as the secondary coach up there that has them so optimistic? I don't get it.
Primarily it's that Herrmann (we assume) won't be our defensive coordinator anymore. That alone is cause for celebration.

As for why we like English in particular, for me, it's last year. We lost Mundy and Shazor, starters from 2004, and our secondary in 2005 showed great improvement. I admit, that might not be saying much after the 2004 secondary got mgoblog to coin the phrase, "yards after Mundy." However, outside of Hall, our secondary was either of average athleticsm (Barringer, Englemon, Mason) or young (Trent, Harrison), so the solid secondary play was impressive to me.

English is also reportedly aggressive on defense, which is a breath of fresh air after Hermann. I still have nightmares over the soft zone we played on that last drive by you guys where Smith picked us apart. So again, we're optimistic because he's not Herrmann.

Herrmann might be sticking around, possibly as LB coach and/or recruiting coordinator. I actually hope he stays on as the latter, so he's a good recruiter and is certainly loyal to the program.
