Michigan Coaches go running for Pros

As for why we like English in particular, for me, it's last year. We lost Mundy and Shazor, starters from 2004, and our secondary in 2005 showed great improvement. I admit, that might not be saying much after the 2004 secondary got mgoblog to coin the phrase, "yards after Mundy." However, outside of Hall, our secondary was either of average athleticsm (Barringer, Englemon, Mason) or young (Trent, Harrison), so the solid secondary play was impressive to me.

I enjoy YAM's during football season.

Well, I wish they would have held off just one more year before making a change. That said, I am glad they kept it "inhouse" Hermann has been there forever - can't see them completely cutting the cord. Hopefully, he'll still have influence - I can't imagine it would be pleasant if, say, Hermann was now the LB coach under English, being in the MI defensive game planning meetings.

It's definately better than if they would have brought someone in from the outside.

:oh: :io:

Ron English is in his third season with the Michigan football program, coordinating the defensive secondary. The Wolverine defensive secondary has collected 25 interceptions during English's two seasons and turned four of those picks into touchdowns. In addition, U-M has yielded 23 TD passes by the opposition during that time, including an NCAA-leading nine in 2003.
English became the first coach in NCAA history to have two defensive backs earn consensus All-America honors in the same season, since the organization began incorporating both an offensive and defensive team in 1965, as cornerback Marlin Jackson and safety Ernest Shazor earned the recognition following the 2004 season.
Shazor became the third defensive back in school history to lead the team in tackles, tallying 84 stops and 10 tackles for loss during the 2004 campaign. The U-M secondary collected 12 interceptions and returned two for touchdowns, an 88-yard return by Shazor against Miami (Ohio) and a 25-yard play by Grant Mason vs. Iowa. Cornerback Leon Hall batted down a team- and career-high 10 passes and first-year starting safety Ryan Mundy finished fifth on the team with 51 stops and two picks.
English made an immediate impact on the Wolverine secondary during his first season. U-M tied for the national lead in fewest touchdown passes yielded with nine and finished ninth in pass efficiency defense. The secondary collected 13 interceptions and returned two for scores. The unit was led by All-Big Ten second team cornerbacks Jeremy LeSueur and Markus Curry and the safety duo of Earnest Shazor and Marlin Jackson. Shazor was third on the team with 57 tackles, including eight TFLs, two sacks and two interceptions.
A 12-year veteran of college coaching, English spent five seasons at Arizona State. He coached secondary all five years with the Sun Devils, the final two years with the cornerbacks and the previous three seasons mentoring the safeties. He helped ASU to three bowl appearances: the 1999 Aloha, 2000 Aloha and 2002 Holiday bowls.
English also tutored the secondary for two seasons at San Diego State (1996-97) and served as the outside linebackers coach at Northern Arizona (1996). His first stint at ASU was as a graduate assistant coach handling the defensive line during the 1994-95 seasons. English began his collegiate coaching career as the defensive backs coach at Mt. San Antonio College (1993) in Walnut, Calif. He coached one season at Ganesha High School (1992), his alma mater, in Pomona, Calif.
English was a four-year letterman (1987-90) and senior starter at safety for the California Golden Bears. He also started on special teams all four seasons at California. English finished his career with 134 tackles and seven sacks and participated in the 1990 Copper Bowl against Wyoming. His identical twin brother, Don, also played for the Golden Bears.
English played one season of prep football at Ganesha
