Michael Jackson dies after cardiac arrest

I think Michael Jackson was fantastic in his prime. Thriller will have to go down as one of the greatest albums of all times, regardless of its monster sales. Van Halen on guitar on Beat It was just something else for a pop song.

Other images are strong in my mind when I think of this musician. What strikes me is how tortured this man must have been by being in life what he could not be in his mind. He was not unattractive, yet the legendary plastic surgery. The lack of stable marital relations. The pedophile charges and payments to make allegations go away. The eventual court case. The child-like way in which he acted out many parts of his life. The father who beat him and apparently left Jackson feeling like he had been denied his childhood. The mob of people who lived off him from the time he was a child. It's a pretty sorry tale.

Still, I just can't get on this train with people who were calling him Wacko Jacko just a few weeks ago but tell us today that he was a saint. Elvis launched rock 'n roll. The Beatles had a major impact on society. No matter how much I enjoyed his music in his prime, a quarter century ago, I can't buy into these claims that he is bigger then Elvis and the Beatles.

Okay I am one of the most cynical people in the world, and I will flat out admit that. I had the memorial on in the background while I was working on other stuff, and I will admit I stopped and actually felt sympathy and got a little misty, when that little girl got up at the end and said she was going to miss her dad.

My comments weren't meant to be cynical, quite the opposite. I think there was a side of this guy in which he was probably a good father. He loved his kids and they loved him, there is no doubt about that. There was a side to his personal life that reviled many, there is no doubt about that.

I guess my point is that the very same press who breathlessly revealed every charge against Wacko Jacko as if it were proven truth (and I am not debating whether it was or not), now acts as if there was never any hint of scandal about him.

In many of his fans' eyes, Michael Jackson is the best of all time. He was one of the best entertainers of his era and one of my personal favorites back then. I just resent the constant barrage of "best of all time" statements as if everyone took a vote of some kind.

Professionally, Jackson needs no false praise. Thriller is the best selling album of all time by a long shot. But he is not the best selling artist. The Beatles and Elvis each sold 50% more albums than Michael Jackson over a shorter span of years (link). Both had a far greater impact on daily life during their times.

Jackson stands well enough professionally to make all the puffery of the last few days unnecessary. I'm glad his kids are able to see that their father, who they will grow up to read about as Wacko Jacko, was respected in the eyes of lots of fans who loved his music.

My comments were not directed at you, just happen to come right after your post.

In many ways I agree with everything you say, I think the popularity thing has allot to do with someones age also. For people in their 30's elvis and in some cases the beatles did not have that impact. Jackson was that star that transcended everything to many people, he was an international sensation. People think back to middle school and high school dances, and jackson songs were prominent with major events. Jackson used the music video era to expand on a story of his songs. Many artist today give him as much credit to having an impact on what they do as anyone else.

Sorry. But the continual fan/hero worship is way over the top. He was not worthy of this kind of excess. Please, CNN and networks give us something else! Images of him with children just creep me out. :shake:

.

Wondering what numbers you came up with here, because I may be missing something, but when I add in the other albums Jackson had he way outsells the beatles. Okay found the right link that you were looking at, and some of the numbers and timeline seem skechy at best. I don't see how you can only count the beatles for 10 years, that would mean that they haven't sold an album since 1970, which I think we would all agree is not true.

Sounds like you have cable. Aren't there a lot of options if you don't want to see the news coverage?

Personally, I haven't even seen his picture or hear anybody say his name today. I know that I'd be annoyed by what many people are saying about him today. I'm able to not watch the train wreck.

What? You can change the channel? Teach me how!! :)

That is what cracks me up, people complain about what is on, but I am pretty sure the coverage wasn't on all 300 stations people get in their home.

I dare so it is pretty hard to avoid it, even if you aren't actively watching any of it. Just flipping through channels, it's pretty nauseating the number of times you'll see them covering this story. Or a commercial for the evening news during a show talks about it.

I haven't watched any news coverage of it, but I can still tell it's overwhelming.
