Miami (FL) Hurricanes (1926-2003)

I go out of the country for a week, and this is what happens - ain't even back yet, until tomorrow.

<sigh>

Don't know much about this cat, but THIS is the "superstar" hire?
Really?

What do you guys think? I don't know much about this cat, but, Temple-to-Miami is not exactly the coaching hop I was looking for...

any coach who takes a zero win program to nine in 3 years must have a good handle on x's and o's IMO.

You'd think the U can recruit for itself, so a guy who can put the rest togteher through coaching seems like a smart move to me. Randy Shannon never impressed anyone in terms of strategy I don't think.

IMO, Miami needs an up-and-comer that will be aggressive with the program, and Al seems to of had success wherever he has gone. Yeah, its not a stellar hire like a Chris Petersen, but its a good one.

The MAC has produced a ton of stellar coaches like Saban (Toledo), Meyer (BGSU) who have national championships, as well as up-and-comers like Brian Kelly (CMU), and a ton of legends like our own Woody Hayes (Miami), Schembechler (Miami), and Ara Parshegain (Miami). Also, decent hires have come from the MAC like Glen Mason, or Gary Pinkel (Toledo) as well. Most BCS-championship winning coaches within the past 10 years have been either coaches or assistants at MAC schools like Tressel and Stoops (alongside Saban and Meyer).

Maybe he'll be a decent MAC hire like Pinkel or Glen Mason. Maybe he'll be the next Meyer. Either way, I think he'll be better than Shannon

Early in the year when Temple played Penn State there was chatter that he may be the next Penn State head coach if JoePa hung it up in the next couple years.

State Penn fans are gonna be [censored]ed.
JoePa's apparently recently told a PSU recruit he was planning on staying another 5-6 years before hanging 'em up, so that's gotta tick off the PSU fans wanting a regime change too. Golden's contract is for 5 years though, so there's a chance Golden might be setting himself up for that PSU job nicely, especially with the experience he's gonna get being the head coach at Miami.

If he does well there in Miami, the Nits are gonna have a battle on hands to get him to come to them after JoePa is gonesville.

It's becoming less and less of a joke to suggest that JoePa is going to die on the sidelines.

I'm legitimately becoming concerned that those in charge out there are going to let him "coach" until his literal dying breath.

Nothing says big time like having your AD leave for Texas Tech.

MiamiHerald

UM president Donna Shalala confirmed Friday that athletic director Kirby Hocutt has accepted the AD position with Texas Tech.

UM president Donna Shalala sent out this written statement Friday afternoon:

"I am deeply disappointed that after only two-and-a-half years of a very successful tenure as leader of our athletics programs, Kirby Hocutt has decided to accept the AD position at Texas Tech.We did everything we could to convince him to stay, but in the end it was an intensely personal decision.I thank Kirby for his integrity, leadership, and dedication to the university."

Hocutt called a meeting with staff members Friday afternoon to announce his decision. It is unknown what steps UM will take to replace him, though senior associate athletic director Tony Hernandez could take over on an interim basis.

Hocutt, 38, was introduced as UM?s 11th athletic director on Feb. 8, 2008. He grew up in Sherman, Texas, about a five-hour drive from Lubbock, where Texas Tech is located. Hocutt has family in Texas, and some believe part of the reason he left could have been to be closer to his parents.

Hocutt was in Texas on Wednesday and Thursday, and back in Coral Gables on Friday. Considered a caring, yet driven young administrator on the rise, he is well-respected in the realm of college athletics, and UM officials and trustees wanted badly to keep him.

Cont'd ...

Agreed. I love everything im hearing from Golden. Bringing back Kehoe was a great move. Our offensive line should be monsters next year.

Miami has alot of talent and it sounds like we finally have the coaching to get the best out of these kids.
