Miami (FL) Hurricanes (1926-2003)

How all the mighty teams in the state of Florida have fallen over the last several years.

Miami hires a new coach, and the media inevitably rushes to say that it'll be Schellenberger all over again as new coach puts a fence around Southern Florida recruiting. He doesn't, and he's gone in four years. Rinse. Wash. Repeat. An on-campus stadium is pretty much the only thing that can save that program at this point.

What makes you think he'll last 4 years? They shit canned their last 2 coaches (Richt and Diaz) after only 3 years.

I don't think the campus will get a stadium anytime soon however....

Report: Miami is set to significantly raise the annual football budget

The University of Miami is finally willing to allocate the necessary funding that it takes to compete at a high level in modern college football.

According to Miami Hurricanes insider Mike Ryan Ruiz of the Dan Le Batard Show, the UM administration is willing to commit $20-30M more to Miami’s annual football budget.

"The excuse that Miami has no money doesn't hold water [anymore]," Ruiz said on the 'Local Hour' that was released Thursday morning. "That is a major, major commitment. I think the university understands that it is important to push some of these numbers out there because the narrative that Miami isn't a good program is out of control."

Why is UM all of a sudden willing to provide more funding to the football program?

According to a source, President Julio Frenk, who was criticized by ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit on College Game Day for being apathetic towards Miami’s football program, now understands the value that a competitive football team can bring to the university as a whole.

Frenk views athletics, and specifically football, as a marketing tool for a university. Spending more money towards football is akin to expanding the marketing budget.

Frenk saw the potential of the football program’s ability to spotlight the university back in 2017 when the Hurricanes hosted ESPN’s College Game Day on campus the morning of their game against Notre Dame.

The scene was picturesque that day: UM had a significant crowd gathered by the set of Game Day, which overlooked Lake Osceola on a beautiful November day. Sailboats were in the lake and the energy on campus was palpable that day.

That type of consistent marketing pays for itself, which is why Frenk wants to provide the resources to get UM’s football program back on that type of stage on a more consistent basis.

Yeah, some big money booster is trying to drum up money to get an on campus stadium to replace the Coral Gables HS. Not sure how legit that is

Has Miami ever had an on-campus stadium?

I've never been to the old Orange Bowl, but I think it was located in the current site of the Miami Marlins stadium, which I visited during the MLB All-Star game a few years back. From what I recall, it was not in Coral Gables by any means.

They would have the down payment on a nice 50k seat stadium for what they’ve paid in buyouts lately.

No
Only the OB and now the Hard Rock

It also needs to be noted that Miami talent back in the Schnellenberger, Johnson and Erickson days didn't have the internet, or any camps. So essentially you had a bunch of talented kids who had never left home, so that's all they knew. With 7 on 7 teams, national camps on every college campus, that's no longer the case. It's not out of the realm of possibility that even a lower ranked FL kid would've been able to tour many northern schools by the time he's a senior if he's on a 7 on 7 team. Rich Rod built his resume in West VA on SoFLa kids that didn't didn't want to stay home. And many don't, to escape some unsafe environments. It's pretty foolish of Miami fans to all of the sudden think that kids still won't want to leave home and that elite teams still won't get top talent. They may get a few less, but they'll still get theirs

Wasn't the Orange Bowl similar to the Coliseum for USC. Technically not on-campus but pretty much right across the street.

Politically connected lawyer assembles team to pitch UM football stadium in Coral Gables

Ruiz noted that he has not spoken to the university about plans for a stadium or potential locations.

I don't think there is anything wrong with Miami football that can't be fixed by a politically connected lawyer and a Brinks truck full of drug money... I mean money. Could have come from anywhere - don't know why I said that.
