THE U: Part 2 will air after the Heisman Trophy presentation on ESPN. http://caneswatch.blog.palmbeachpost.com/2014/12/05/exclusive-look-at-the-u-part-2-director-billy-corben-previews-sequel-to-smash-hit/

I love me some 30 for 30.

You look at Miami from 1983-2002 in a 20 year span. They won 5 Championships (1983,1987,1989,1991,2001) and had a chance to win in 1985 ,1986 (Penn St upset), 1993 (Alabama upset) and 2002 (Ohio St upset). They finished 2nd in 1988 and 2000. From 1985-1992 they were 76-8. They got the best of Nebraska, Oklahoma, Florida St, and Notre Dame during their run. That is a hell of a run. They were down from 1994-1999 and the time was dominated by Nebraska.

To me, the 2003 Fiesta Bowl was the beginning of the end. Miami fans cry over that pass interference call. Get over it. Focus on the 5 or 6 turnovers they had. Cry about your team not protecting the ball better. Cry about your defense for letting Krenzel convert a 4th and 15ish in overtime. They had decent years in 2003 and 2004. Then came the Peach bowl where they get smashed by LSU 40-3 in 2005. They have the brawl with FIU in 2006 and Pata is murdered. The Shapiro information comes out. They haven't been the same since.

Miami (FL) is not even a football school. They are content with what they have. I don't think we will ever see "the U" again. They don't spend money on the football program. It's an arms race in terms of facilities and paying coaches. They are lagging way behind. Maybe they need to start cheating again......so we can see THE U: Part 3.

Totally unnecessary. 'Tha U' is irrelevant, and has been for over a decade. Their "rebirth" this time around lasted about 3 years (2000-02). I'm sure it'll just be another nostalgia- driven puff piece for their NFL alums and 14 fans with a large segment spent bitching about the pass interference call. Fuck them, and fuck 'The U'. Enjoy your nostalgia, because you ain't ever getting back to what you were. Not when you can't even draw 5,000 fans to come to your games. They're the Florida version of Minnesota...won a bunch of titles in another age, but will never get back to that level for a number of reasons. Couldn't happen to a better scumbag program.

The U might luck into success again, just because there is so much talent within an hour of Coral Gables.

Here and there, maybe. But right now, it appears they're unwilling to invest in the football program. As long as they continue to hire coaches like Randy Shannon and Al Golden, the best they can hope for is to luck into the occasional 9-10 win season. FSU is a juggernaut right now, and UF could be heading back in the right direction with McElwaine (I think that was a good hire). If those two programs are strong, the U will remain a distant third, unless a drastic shift happens and they decide to try to resurrect their program with a good HC.

What's doomed Miami, is the major disconnect between the admin and the football staff. The disconnect has been there back to Schnellenberger days, but he, Johnson and Butch Davis brought in so much high end talent that it didn't matter that the admin hated football, they still won. Once the talent level dropped off because Coker was too lazy to actually recruit, then the bottom fell out. And the admin had more reason to ignore football when they stopped winning, and then the Shapiro scandal dropped and the free fall went insane. A great hire would resurrect the program with so much talent right in their own backyard, but the admin won't spend money on top name coach, and I'm sure after another year of Golden, the school will appease the fans with a hire of an "up and coming" coach or get a coach past his prime but with a big name for cheap. Schools can still be successful after scandals(Alabama, OSU, UF, FSU, etc) but its an almost impossible task if your own admin don't back the program

I'm really enjoying this The U Part II.

But only because I know how it ends. :jt:

OH, the bullshit excuses are great. "That penalty took our minds out if the game", "McGehee going out changed our hearts", "We played sub par". They didn't even talk about anything after the knee and before the FG to take it overtime.

The salt from these players in this is so goddamn tasty. I mean they straight up admitted that that loss killed the spirit of the program.

I know these things are always viewed from the lens of the protagonist, but even at the end when they were walking through all of the stats and posted about how they had the most national championships from 83 through 03 and had a #6 on the screen until a flag was thrown and they knocked it back to a #5, I couldn't help but think that a decade later there are people that still can't get over it.
