Mexico 0, USA 2 (Final)

The U.S. National Team is 6-0-1 when playing games in Columbus Crew Stadium, including 2-0 against Mexico (both games were 2-0 Yanks).

U.S. comes in going 4-0-0 since October (W vs Cuba 6-1, W at Trinidad & Tobago 2-1, W at Guatemala 2-0, W vs Sweden 3-2 in a friendly). Mexico comes in going 0-3-1 since October (L at Jamaica 0-1, tie at Canada 2-2, L at Honduras 0-1, L vs Sweden 0-1 in a friendly). Their loss to Sweden was right after we beat the Swedes and we were up 3-1 until late in the game, thanks to a hat trick by Sacha Kljestan. If El Tri loses this game, their coach is rumored to be fired (they're already apparently lining up an apparent successor).

The U.S. team is 9-2-2 overall vs Mexico since 2000. Both losses were at Mexico in Azteca Stadium.

Smart money is on the Yanks in this game. Remember that a tie counts as a loss in the BP poll, though. Still not enough to scare me though.

Latest weather report for Wednesday: high of 61, low of 51, 80% chance of rain. Too bad it won't be freezing cold like most of us have been praying, but I believe 51 degrees is still considered very cold to most of those guys suiting up for Mexico. The rain could make for an even chippier game than usual, which should really say something.

does this game count for anything?
Yup. World Cup qualifier. It's a huge deal, especially considering that Columbus got the game against their arch nemesis... for the third WCQ in a row.

If Mexico loses, they stand a decent shot at missing the World Cup for the first time in a loooong ass time. Would be like us beating TSUN and them missing out on the Rose Bowl or a BCS game.

A rose bowl that only came around once every 4 years!

nice post BT.

i like the US/mexico games because of the chippiness. they usually get after each other. does this game count for anything?
This is the first game of the 4th (and final) round of the USA's World Cup Qualifying. So it's pretty important, especially to hold home field and get a win (though the US should have no issues advancing out of their CONCACAF region when it's all said and done).

There's 6 teams in the "Hex." Each team plays each other home and away (10 games). Top 3 teams get automatic bids to the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

US/Mexico is ALWAYS big. Huge regional bragging rights on the line. US has owned Mexico since 2000 and we are developing a mental edge over El Tri. USA has to keep it going and take it to them on Wednesday night.

who is in the conference (for lack of better term)?

usa, mex, ???
'jenkins covered the teams in the CONCACAF region.

As far as the other teams in the final stage of qualifying- USA, Mexico, Honduras, Trinidad & Tobago, Costa Rica, El Salvador.

Not an entirely competitive region. US has been dominant, Mexico is usually pretty strong, but still inferior to the US. The Nats have started setting up more matches with top national clubs around the world to better prepare them for the World Cup.

Typing this out makes me realize how much this resembles OSU (U.S.), Michigan (Mexico) and the Big 10.

Edit- Just to add, although the USA is easily the most talented team in the region, going to some of these places to play away games is very very difficult. The Yanks go up against home field advantage that is unlike any other sport. Dirty refs, fans, playing conditions, living conditions, treatment, etc...it's UGLY. But overall, there should be no trouble getting to WC '10.

To go into this more, I believe that when the Yanks go into Azteca Stadium, the air quality is so bad that it's like playing a 90 + minute match immediately after a monster truck rally.
