Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

Best wishes for an environmentally conscious, socially responsible, low stress, non-addictive, gender neutral, winter solstice holiday, practiced within the most joyous traditions of the religious persuasion of your choice, but with respect for the religious persuasion of others who choose to practice their own religion as well as those who choose not to practice a religion at all;

Additionally, a fiscally successful, personally fulfilling, and medically uncomplicated recognition of the generally accepted calendar year 2008, but not without due respect for the calendars of choice of other cultures whose contributions have helped make our society great, without regard to the race, creed, color, religious, or sexual preferences of the wishes.
(Disclaimer: This greeting is subject to clarification or withdrawal. It implies no promise by the wisher to actually implement any of the wishes for her/himself or others and no responsibility for any unintended emotional stress these greetings may bring to those not caught up in the holiday spirit.)

I'm pretty sure that ain't a luminaria. That's just your common street walking campfire. Luminarias get all dressed up fancy in a paper bag or other back-lit enclosure and hang around your house.

It does certainly illuminate, however.

Christmas in Taos

Blend of traditions make this a special time of the year

It’s the Deer Dance this year. That’s what tribal members at Taos Pueblo will be doing on Christmas Day. It is a ritual performance with elemental roots in the culture of the Tiwa, but because they keep native religion strictly private, its “significance,” as tourists like to say, is prohibited from being explained to outsiders. And yet, it’s not hard to understand.

As you watch the dancers and the interplay of symbols, listen to the singers, and feel the visceral heartbeat of the drums, one’s intuition will find a way to follow where English words cannot.

It also becomes immediately apparent that this is not a dance done for the benefit of non-Indian visitors. This is obviously part of something stronger, more integral, reverent, and far older than imagined. You realize that this is a dance that would have been done whether you are there or not, and that it’s done for reasons so basically important they are meshed with the very movement of clouds across a blossoming dawn.

That is indeed a luminaria! The term here means "small fire". So it's use is very appropriate and historically accurate. :biggrin:
