This is just not a smart choice on Merriman's part as he is going to cost himself millions upon millions of dollars in future salary. You have to admire his willingness to put the team before himself, but how in the hell does he expect to play with 2 out of his 3 knee ligaments torn? We should change the title of this thread to read "Merriman on Crack."

He's 24 with a shitload of talent. Playing ability will be minimized(whatever that might be for him). Possibility of screwing it up for good is high. It's not like other nfl players don't hear about how messed up his knee is going to be. He might as well walkout with a bullseye on it.

Rereading what substance showed up in his tests even further shows he is getting bad advice. He was taking one of the longest acting steroids(deca) you can possible obtain.

It would be a good time to take a year off..imo

Is that really what it is? I know that's what the media coverage is going to try to tell me it is, but I think this is a very selfish move on his part. The Chargers could lose several years of a franchise player in his prime if he destroys his knee over this.

I guess you could call it a good move if he stays healthy and the Chargers end up winning the Super Bowl. If either one of those two does not happen though, it is a very dumb move. If I were the Chargers I would consider protecting my investment in him by not letting him play. If I were a Chargers fan, allowing him to do this would indicate to me that they don't plan on being good enough after this season and are going for broke - and with their roster that would not be acceptable to me.

His contract is up after the '09 season and John Clayton(insert joke) has said that the Chargers have no intention of resigning him after his contract with the team has expired. At most the Chargers would lose 2 years of his services(if they decided to Franchise him after '09). Either Merriman is a dumbass or as I previously mentioned is on some sort of drug. His agent must be going crazy.

As previously mentioned the only way in which this move can be justified is if the Chargers end up winning the Super Bowl, even then you still have to question whether him being out there is worth it. It's not as if one player is going to make or break a team, especially if that player is severely injured.

Does anyone know what caused the knee injury? Ws it an impact blow on the knee, or happen on a sharp cut?

I'd be interested in hearing, as none of the talk radio shows have mentioned it. If it's from movement, you'd have to wonder about the consequences of roids...

Trust me, if he can play, the Chargers will keep him past the 09 season, look how long they kept Seau, Clayton is as much an "insider" as you or I.

I do think it's stupid of him not to get surgery, but the rumors going around are that the surgery could very well be career ending, so maybe he's looking to make this years salary and take that risk in the off season.

One player basically made that difference last year, look at the Chargers v Pats game, look at all those field goals, now think how effecting Tomlinson is in the red zone, he can pass, run, and is a threat every time he's on the field. The defense kept them in that game, but when it got time to get the ball into the end zone, no one was there that could do it. Turner was a power back, so the linemen could handle him, and they knew if he got the ball there was no chance of a pass, Tomlinson kept defenses honest, if you tried to cheat, that ball was handed off and thrown to an open receiver.

Sorry, one player does make or break a team, and Merriman could potentially be that player on defense.

Can he make it the whole season though? This is the NFL, people are going to go for his knees, taking Merriman out for the season would be grounds for a quarterback buying someone a new house.

I think it's a bad idea, I think he should undergo the knife now, but it's not my career.

I thought the thread title was "Merman on roids". I expected shenanigans. This thread did not deliver.

Merriman to undergo knee surgery, miss 2008 season

SAN DIEGO -- Star outside linebacker Shawne Merriman pulled the plug on his 2008 season on Tuesday when he told the San Diego Chargers he'll have surgery on the two torn ligaments in his left knee.

The loss of Merriman, whose hard hits earned him the nickname "Lights Out," is a big one for a team that has Super Bowl expectations.

Merriman's decision came two days after he barely resembled the player who had an NFL-high 39? sacks in the past three seasons and played in three straight Pro Bowls.

Contd....

Merriman arrested in domestic call

SAN DIEGO -- San Diego Chargers star linebacker Shawne Merriman was arrested on suspicion of choking and restraining his girlfriend, a reality TV star, as she tried to leave his Southern California home, authorities said.

San Diego County Sheriff's Lt. Gary Steadman said 27-year-old Tila Tequila signed a citizen's arrest warrant early Sunday, charging Merriman with battery and false imprisonment.

The dude is a hot head... The Commish will probably give Merriman a nice sized vacation if true.

When I realized that Maryland was playing up at Berkley, made me think what a douche Merriman was for not attending the game to show support. Guess he had a clothing line party that was more important.
