Memorable Golf Courses One Has Played (or Want to Play)

How was Bethpage? I heard it's a monster - even from the non-pro tees.

I've played the red course which borders the black. Monster is a good description. It is a golf course on steroids. The fairway traps and greenside traps are crazy deep, and that doesn't even mention how long the course is.

Yes, it is. I had a chance to play about 3-4 weeks before the Open in 2002. Jim Furyk and Don Pooley was on the course that day also. My group played from the back tees and I was the only one that broke 100. Number 10 was a monster as I was unable (so was Don Pooley) to hit the fairway from the tee. You had to carry the ball I believe 260 yards plus to even to reach the fairway. The day I played the wind was constantly blowing at 20 mph with gusts up to 40 mph. I asked the head professional what would have been the average score if the Open was played today. His guess upper 70's, maybe even low 80's as wind played havoc and you couldn't hold the green with the wind. It was a brutal day but when you get a chance to play "Black" up do it regardless of the weather....

#10 is notorious! i need to get out there this summer. if i go by myself and get there early i should be able to get out.

14 - According to the bethpage website, if you are a NY state resident, you can make a Tee Time 10 days in advance :)

Thank me later.

I've played a number of the famous ones... but Firestone remains my favorite...

My claims to fame are Firestone North = 90; followed next day by Firestone South = 99.. I hit a 3 wood 210 yards to within 6 inches to score my first sub 100 on the South !!!

Anyone that really wants to see how good they are... needs to play Firestone the week following the tournament... when there are like 5 different layers of rough... and the greens are just slightly faster than a billiard table... I've seen many a sub 7 handicapper not break 100 on the North...

I always felt I was much more efficient with a much lower cost per stroke than most... and missing 3 ft putts should not count as a full stroke...

I don't mind tough... but I don't like unfair... Arthur Hills course in HH is unfair... many of the standalone greens will not hold and slope into the water...

Hey NJBuck, can you get us golf posters on Pine Valley? Year in and out, that seems to be in the top 5 of '100 best golf courses'.......:). Would like to play back east, NY seems to have some great courses, Bethpage and Shinnecock.

Played TPC Sawgrass many moons ago, and Spyglass a week before the Crosby Clambake. Can't remember what I shot (still have the scorecard tho), Princeville from the black tees (too much course for me), and Olmpic Club Lake course from the blues (no yardage markers whatsoever). Broke 90 on OC, but was having a spectacular day. Pebble Beach three times (green fees were $35, $50, and $75, now about $400), and for those of you who get to Monterey, play Poppy Hills. It's like Spyglass, but tamer. Very good test of golf, and very reasonable. Used to play twice a year there, but since moved to the Valley, hard to get to.

Want to do the Palm Springs loop, and play PGA West (has a higher slope than Spyglass), and up to Bandon Oregon to play the three 'Dunes' courses. All three (RT Jones courses?) are highly rated. I envy those that play the Donald Ross courses, they are classics. If I had a year to live and the means, I'd like to play all 100 Best Courses before I croaked.

You can do what I'm doing and make a 5 year plan of playing continental Europe's top 20.
Continental Europe's Top 20 golf courses | Tour News | Golf Monthly

18 of the 20 are accessible with appropriate arrangements made in advance and you can usually just knock off a country at a time. The most difficult will be France - since Morfontaine and Le Bourdes are private.:shake::ohwell:

Next April - I'll cross off the Spanish courses. :)

Played at Princeville, in the Hawaiian Islands, and there was a shot over water etc. Took out my 3-wood, and the guy I was playing with said, "are you going for it?". Told him, "I didn't come to Hawaii to lay up." and proceeded to put it in the water :shake: . My Dad would get in the woods, and say, 'there's an opening there', and I was, 'Dad, chip it back to the fairway' but he'd go for it. Called him "Deerslayer" because he was always trying to make that 1-in-100 shot. Did it often enough also. You're the East Coast 'Deerslayer'.......keep it up. Any donkey can shoot par if you play from the short grass. Well not really, but.....it takes real talent to make par (or bogey) from the rough, woods, sand, pavement, water hazard, etc. etc. Just ask Arnie, or Seve. "Go for it, Roy". If I got to play Cypress #16, I'd play two balls. The first one I'd hit over the water, and chip toward hole (for score). The second one, I'd take out a new ball, 3 wood, and rip it toward the flag, just because I had to try.

my most memorable course was a pos, last round i ever played with my grandfather. nothing special, except it was one of the last few times we had alone and talked and what not. we played only 13 holes that day, he would never play more than 9 but that day wanted to play 18. ive never been back to that course and honestly and frankly hope i never do...

Depending on the wind - You might have to hit driver
That would the scariest aspect of the hole - let's say the wind is blowing right to left across the green. You have to aim out across the ocean and hope you hit it hard enough that the wind will bring it back.
