Memo to Mid Major Fans

ORD_Buckeye

Wrong glass, Sir.
Would you please, at long last, just STFU! We deserve more teams in the tournament...Whaaaaa......our teams are unfairly seeded too low.......Whaaaaaa.......they make us play each other in the first round.......Whaaaaa.......it's all a great conspiracy to keep us down......Whaaaaa.

Did it ever occur to you that the NCAA pairs up mid-majors in the first round, not as any conspiracy to drive you out of the tournament but rather, as a means of ensuring that some mid-majors advance and increasing the likelihood that one of your miserable little programs will be this year's Cinderella in the Sweet 16 and Elite 8. No, that couldn't possibly be the reason at all. It must be to keep all of the mid-major teams from beating up on the big conference teams in the first round.

Now here's my solution if you consider things so unfair. Leave. Get the fuck out. There is no state or federal law that requires you to remain in the NCAA. Go! Gather up all of your 25K football stadiums (that you can't even fill), your 5K basketball attendance, your measly 5 or 6 non-revenue sports, and your entire money losing athletic departments and LEAVE. Start your own NCAA--the Nobody Cares Athletic Association. You won't be missed.

There are no minor teams. Only majors and mid-majors.

My first thought when Drake was matched against W. Kentucky, instead of another 12 seed like Villanova, was that they didn't want the ride for Drake to end in a blowout loss to a middle of the road power conference team. It's better to put Indiana against Arkansas than to put Arkansas against UNLV and Indiana against Kent State. That way the feel good story gets to continue for as many "cinderellas" as possible.

I agree. And to expand on your point a bit, I was a much bigger fan of the tournament when it wasn't so manufactured. In a tournament like this, you can put 64 (65?) teams in a hat and draw names to build a bracket, and you'll still get compelling matchups and great stories. Now we get a gerrymandered bracket so you're guaranteed a few so-called cinderellas in the second and third rounds and you get "historic" early round matchups that recall past tournaments - like how they always seem to put Kentucky & Utah in the same bracket (or now Kentucky & Marquette). I like seeing cinderallas and parity as much as anybody, but not when it's done artificially.

My only question is:

We all know Ohio State is the Godfather. But if Miami is Fredo (agreed) and Cincinnati is Sonny (definately), then did Mrs. Corleone just abort Michael?

By the way, OU is definately Connie, the drunken slut that gets beaten up by her husband and many boyfriends.

I always assumed tOSU was Michael. The younger one that eventually took power.
And who was so thoroughly evil and power-drunk, that he murdered poor, innocent Fredo. And for what it's worth, I saw one of those Inside The Actor's Studio episodes, with Coppola, in which he said that the title The Godfather refers more to Michael than to Vito, which I think makes sense. So OSU would, in fact, be both The Godfather and Michael.

The real question is, who would be that bastard Luca Brasi?

Bingo! The older brother was found sorely lacking for the leadership role and passed over (1860s onward), seethed in bitterness, took his pathetic shot at gaining the throne (1960s and 70s) and was dealt with--harshly. (80s to the current period).

On March 31st Eric Fingerhut (Al Neri) is taking Fredo fishing!

The Godfather, I would assume, would be Rutherford B. Hayes who was Governor at the time that the decision was made to found a new university to be the state's flagship rather than give the role to one of the existing older state schools. After his retirement (from the Presidency) he came back to Columbus and essentially acted as the university's de-facto president in its formative years--kinda like the consigliere role that Vito played for Michael after retiring.

Yes, giving the order to murder is murder.

He was no different than any other powerful man with the responsibility for others...Senators...Presidents.

Ohio State is no different than any other powerful state flagship university with the responsibility for the state's taxpayers and economy...Wisconsin...Berkeley.

You think Berkeley wouldn't send Cal State Fullerton to the bottom of Lake Tahoe if they made a pathetic attempt to challenge Berkeley's role.

I was referring to your characterization of Fredo as "poor and innocent".
Major tangent here, but that was largely tongue-in-cheek, as regards the comparison to ostensibly poor, abused mid-major athletic programs from Ohio. But yes, Fredo had it coming due to his betrayal, but he was also pitiable, due to his weakness, and innocent, in the sense of being naive.
