McKinley - Colerain State Title Game

JohnnyCockfight

Beer is God's proof that he loves us.
From the play-by-play provided over on JJ Huddle, it sounds like Colerain got off to a horrendous start, fumbling in their first few possessions and surrendering an early lead, and then...beating the absolute shit out of McKinley on their home field, 50-10.

Edit: had the wrong score down for a second there. This Colerain squad is one of the best Ohio high school football teams ever.

Listened to the first half on the radio. Colerain gave up about 75% of their O on 2 carries. One long one for the TD and another long run in the secons quarter. That Colerain D is as good as some D1 programs.

I'm really glad for the Colerain program. They have been a major powerhouse for over a decade, but this is their 1st title. With the bad luck they have endured-ineligible scrub cost them a title shot in 95' and a missed extra point cost them last year in the regional final-they deserve the accolades they are receiving now. This is the 1st Cincinnati area public school to win the title since Princeton in 87'.

I thought X won 2-3 years back. Am I wrong?
St. X is in the powerhouse GCL--the Cincy big-school Catholic League, along with teams like Elder and Moeller.

Corelain is a public school in the suburbs north of Cincy, playing in the same conference as Princeton, Hamilton (the Underwoods), and the Lakotas (Rehring and Maupin). It's a lot tougher for a public school to make it--Colerain has been dominant in the area for quite awhile, but had to get over the hump (Elder).

Gotta give some credit for Brian Cross for getting to that game. About five games into the season it was doubtful he would have his job next year. Quite a nice run. He did a nice job here in Grovetucky for many years and it looks like he has turned the corner at McKinley as well.

Anyone started up a pool on how long it will be until we find out that half of Colerain's team was really academically ineligible or that one of their players is in fact 23 years old?

Colerain would have probably won state a few times times in the 90's, but unfortunately turned out to be their own worst enemy more than once.

No...it isn't.

No...it isn't.
Colerain has been there, done that w/ ineligibilities and such....cost them a trip to the state finals in 95'.....I'm sure Kerry Coombs goes thru his players grades, eligibility, etc. w/ a fine toothed comb....no pun intended....

In regards to St. X... Johnny is right. I graduated from there in 2000. We won state in hoops that year, the year before we were runners-up in football. Canton McKinley beat us pretty good, Doss was a two-way player for them and he was a bad ass. In 2001 Iggy whipped us good, with Tony Gonzalez dominating on both sides of the ball.

In our '99 run Colerain was #1 in the state and very highly rated nationally, but we destroyed them and their star RB BJ Askew something like 42-13. At the beginning of this year I thought Colerain was overrated like in '99, but now its obvious that Johnny's right again, they might be the best ever.
