Maurice and the Combine (MERGED)

his thighs look a little flabby. i also thought in the interviews he looked lean, he might be 234, but its not the same as his "playing" 230

he quit.....i mean he just quit working out at the combine.....as usual, he couldnt have made a poorer decision....at least if he had gutted out a bad day he would have shown something....he could have bounced back in his personal workout and really made a statement...

unbelievable....i've said all along the kid has talent and will play in the nfl.....now, i dont see how any team can take a chance with a quitter, instigator and whistle blower....

wow....

Exactly. He just can't seem to make a good decision. Thought maybe this new agent was doing some good, given the recent interviews...

Coulda, woulda, shoulda. What a horrible shame.

I am scratching my head a little. I mean...was this really a shock to Clarett? I would think that if he were working out and preparing for this, that he would have already known what his 40-time is. Does it really fluctuate that much that it is a complete shock to the athlete? Was he banking on some magic adrenaline rush to thrust him forward faster than usual? I don't get it. He should have known that he is around a 4.7 40 guy and either: A. Emphasized ahead of time that he has never been a burner, but rather excelled on the football field through vision, instincts, and determination. or B. Avoided running and continued to train for individual workouts.

I don't like what he has attempted to do to Ohio State, but if I were an NFL GM, I would take a chance on the guy because I have personally watched him on the field with awe....and somebody will get him for peanuts.

I have been on the Clarett hater bandwagon for some time now.

After reading that story, I have a feeling that this kid's story is going to end very badly.

Hey Mo,
You could have one (maybe two) Heisman trophies and be preparing to be a first round pick with first round money if you had stayed at Ohio State.

Guess you're about to find out who your friends are.

Don't know if anyone saw his interview on NFL Network's Total Access (I think it is repeated at 10 PM and he was in the second half hour). It sure seemed like he was about to break down when Terrelle Davis and Eisen were interviewing him. He didn't say much, except he said he was going back to Ohio State to work out. Huh!?! They were building him up and Davis reminded MoC that both he and Tom Brady were 6th round picks.

Oh yeah, they said some scouts timed him at 4.9 and there were offensive linemen that ran just over 4.9.

I'll have to watch that. Thanks.

John Clayton was just on ESPNEWS, and he basically said that Clarett ran a fullback time and then was a quitter, which would piss off all the NLF running backs coaches. He said he fell from a 4th rounder to a 6th or 7th rounder...or worse, but he said that "Clarett's dreams may be dead" or something to that effect.

MoC Stinks up Combine

wow.... talk about a disapointment.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/draft05/columns/story?columnist=pasquarelli_len&id=2000680

INDIANAPOLIS -- A federal appeals court kept Maurice Clarett out of the 2004 NFL draft. This time around, the former Ohio State standout tailback could keep himself from being chosen in the 2005 lottery.

Clarett, who was hoping to improve his stock with NFL scouts, squandered his latest shot at redemption on Saturday afternoon, posting sluggish performances in the 40-yard dash. According to the unofficial times, Clarett ran 4.72 seconds and 4.82 seconds in his two efforts. Because he was not among the five fastest, no official time was provided.

How slow are those times? By comparison, four offensive line prospects, all weighing more than 300 pounds, were clocked faster than five seconds.

"It's a rough day," said Clarett, who has not played in a game since Ohio State claimed the 2003 national championship. "I prepared 20 times harder than a year ago. I worked to get ready for this day. To totally bust it ... well, it's frustrating."

While he still has time to prepare for a personal workout on March 8, there is now some sense that Clarett, who earlier this week seemed enthused about another chance to prove himself to talent evaluators, might go undrafted. Even with a good performance, he might have been only a middle-round selection, particularly given his long layoff.

Clarett took part in some of the early drills during the running back session at the RCA Dome. After running his 40s, he pulled on his sweatshirt and opted not to finish the rest of the drills. When he appeared in an interview with the NFL Network after the poor times, Clarett appeared to be distraught at his performance.

The scouts quickly surveyed by ESPN.com universally panned Clarett's workout. Arizona Cardinals coach Dennis Green said that the former Ohio State star has a tough road ahead of him.

"Well, it was obvious he didn't run the way he had hoped to, and he has to go back and try to get himself ready for his [private] workout next month," Green said. "I mean, we really don't know how fast he ran when he was playing football. But we know he didn't run fast after this prolonged period away from the game."

At the opposite end of the spectrum, Auburn star Ronnie Brown dazzled scouts with a workout that included unofficial 40-yard times of 4.32 and 4.40. Brown also caught the ball well and may have established himself as the top tailback prospect, ahead of former Auburn teammate Carnell "Cadillac" Williams and Cedric Benson of Texas.

To me, these combines are a goddamn joke. From a Browns fans perspective, the combines are why guys like Mike Junkin and Clifford Charlton go top 10 while guys like Chris Spielman go second round. The combines are why kids like Mike D'Andrea and Mike Kudla probably would have been first round picks after their senior years in High School.

Football is NOT a game of 40-yard sprints. It's not a game of jumping vertically into the air. It's not a game of grabbing an opponent who weighs 225 pounds-falling onto your back-and "pressing" him into the air as many times as you can. You don't run around cones, forwards, backwards, and sideways.

The question on MoC should be the same as any other player out there. CAN HE PLAY FOOTBALL? I'm not gonna answer cuzz I don't know if he can at this level. Clarett has pretty much been hurt since his freshman year in High School. Ability is not the biggest question in my mind, but durability has to be an issue. And in Maurice's situation, it's been a series of injuries to different parts of his body.

If he stays healthy, I think Clarett will have a nice career in the NFL, just based on the ability that I've seen from him. I, for one, am rooting for him. He obviously had a different agenda than what we expected from him, but it's over and done with. Everybody needs to finally move on.
