Maurice and the Combine (MERGED)

Woody,

Nice post. You are right about combines and how they measure things that are the most critical to being successful on a football field. The most telling thing for me with MoC was him quitting after the 40's. That shows more about his character than whether he is faster than the other RB's. It just goes to reinforce the belief that when the going gets tough he is nowhere to be found.

Chances are he is going to have a hell of a lot more adversity in the pros than in college. There is no way he is going to play on a team that goes undefeated as his one season of college ball. GM's and coaches want an idea of how he will handle tough times. Will he just quit on his teammates if they suffer losing seasons or he doesn't get the carries he thinks he deserves? Him walking off the field gives the impression he deals with adversity in the worst way - leaving it to others.

All that time preparing with lawyers and conditioning coaches should have included many sessions with a psychiatrist. That is where he has needed the most help for a long time. As I have said before, he is great when he is in between the lines, but his own worst enemy once he is off the playing field.

Out of shape
Out of sorts
Out of town
Out of contention

It is hard to think of anyone who has blown so much potential in such a short time. He should not be allowed to do anything at Ohio State, period.

From SI:

"Taking a back to the drawing board approach, Clarett said he would hold a pro day workout after all, scheduling it for March 8 at Ohio State. On Thursday, Clarett had said he would not conduct a pro day workout, choosing instead to do all his drill work at the combine."

I thought Clarett giving up the rest of the day is really bad, but damn, now not conducting a pro day workout either? Back to the gym for more leg conditioning, speed training and sum slimfast and fiber...
Last I checked... Thursday was one of those days that came before the combine....

lol

I agree, assuming that he actually makes it and sees significant playing time, that he will have more on-field adversity in the pros. The quitting yesterday speaks to that. How can you realistically expect him to keep fighting after Ray Lewis or Roy Williams knock the crap out of him or after he's been held in check most of a game? The one thing that I always thought about MoC was that he was a gamer, but I question that now (not just because of the combine).

Clarett to work out at OSU

Guys......no one wants another fircken Clarett thread....I know!

However, when watching the interview on NFL network lastnight he let it slip that he was going to work out at OSU. Eisen and TD never followed up on it but it never seems to amaze me, how Tress. is the penultimate humanitarian. I would assume that it is at Pro Day but I could be wrong.

most late round RB's compete to get PT on special teams... i think terrell davis was a 6th or 7th rounder and made the broncos by busting his ass on kickoff coverage.
i can't see maurice being all that excited to be on the 2nd string punt team.

also, i wonder if he would run to tell ESPN his story now after reading their new articles about him.

Forgive - not yet.

I have had mixed feelings about Clarett. Based solely on his contribution to the 2002 NC, there is a small flicker within me that wanted him to do well at the Combine. Everyone should live his dream.

On the other hand, the disgrace and shame he brought to our university is reprehensible and because of that, I will move on. I no longer consider him a Buckeye. He forfeited his citizenship in the Buckeye Nation by his words and actions over the past two years. He turned his back on everyone connected with the university; academia, coaches, teammates, and fans. He was on a mission to destroy our football program and damage the reputation of Ohio State. I'd have to say that to some degree he has accomplished this. His Combine interviews did little to convince me they were nothing more than contrived statements of attrition to impress the scouts and gms. This guy has street smarts and knows how to turn on the "con" at will.

After his miserable performance and an ill-advised but predictable decision to quit, Clarett is in search of friends and a support structure. He should turn to his attorneys rather than the Buckeye Nation for sympathy. I hope few offer it. Personally, I am not ready to forgive Clarett. He has made many poor choices in his young life and perhaps for the first time he is going to find out what personal accountability is all about. The dreams of those big NFL paychecks may have vanished forever. This is his reality check and I don't think he has the strength or character to persevere. Maurice, it's time for you to say "Goodbye Columbus" and move on with your life; we have.

Plano, in my opinion, that deserves a great post award. It says it all. I am amazed that he could even show his face in Columbus, let alone talk about trying to use Ohio State as a backdrop.

In the end, he has destroyed no one but himself. And for a young man that showed every indication of having the ability to be the second multiple Heisman trophy winner, that is just too sad to contemplate.

Well said.
The only thing I would question is the depth of Clarett's street smarts. He seems to have just enough to screw things up.

The worst thing he did at the combine was not his 40 yard dash - it was that he quit. When things don't go the way he wants, he quits - that's his MO. He didn't have to leave OSU. There was a plan in place for him to regain his eligibility, but he didn't want to put in the effort. Instead, he overplayed his hand, spit in everyone's face, and when his big plan turned to shit, he lashed out at those who tried to help him, including Jim Tressel.

I don't feel sorry for Clarett. The goodwill he gained by helping OSU win the NC expired a long time ago, solely through his own selfish and dishonest actions. Seeing him fail, then quit, exposed his true (lack of) character, and it couldn't have happened to a more deserving guy.

Good luck, Maurice...

Or Clarett could have mis-stated what will happen and where it will happen?

If OSU is letting this jerk-off work out there, I might have to rethink my Buckeye Club donation this year. The thought of even one penny of my contribution being burned for his benefit - after all of his bullshit - pisses me off. :mad1:

I sincerely hope this isn't true.

The worst possible outcome from all this is that Maurice is back to one primary target for his guaranteed future invective.

Had he posted reasonable times, had he completed the combine exercises and won over even one heart and one mind from the assembled NFL talent scouts his focus would then be on a possible positive future.

Sadly, he fails, he quits he exits stage left with a vague suggestion that he may work out on a personal day elsewhere -- possibly in Columbus, Ohio.

Its sad for him as he fails (again) to demonstrate resolve, character or follow-through. It is also sad for tOSU as we know all too well what is likely to come down the pike once he has played, or thrown away, all his chips.

Sometime in the future, say a month or so of draft day, we will hear of "new revelations, damaging to The Ohio State University" from the media's darling and latest NFL non-draft pick MoC. The primary reason I wanted him to at least show-up for this combine and not fall flat on his face was to take tOSU out of his cross-hairs. Rather than having the likes of an Al Davis or Tampa Bay become his verbal punching bag, MoC is once again likely to revert to form. In so doing we will see more headlines talking of the "troubled" tOSU Football Program. Swept under the carpet will be all the good work JT and crew have performed and are performing.
