Maryland at tOSU, Oct 9th, Noon ET on FOX

I remember in 2005 when we lost to Texas... AJ Hawk said our defense is to blame is we can't hold a team below 20. Since then that's always been my standard.

Although I only hold our starters to that... so if our starters leave the game at 52-17 that's a good game to me.

not saying it shouldn’t happen from time to time… but this ain’t ‘05 anymore… holding them below 30 might need to be the better expectation

I don't think a 15+ year old standard is all that realistic but to each their own.

Looking at actual scoring numbers in CFB 2021 I'd say against a top 25 offense you are doing well to keep them under 30. Middle of the road offense, 25. Bottom feeders, under 20.

Not sure where Maryland is on that spectrum but I don't think it's bottom 1/3, so I'd be happy with anything at, around, or below 25.

You guys are right but then again this is the big ten too. We don't face a ton of high power offense.

With what we recruit we shouldn't be outside of the top 5 in either offense or defense.

Since some are saying under 30 and I'm saying under 21 is elite? Let's meet in the middle like @Jaxbuck says at under 25.

With this teams offense, any opponent held under 30 should be a relatively comfortable win because on the flip side of that math, it's very hard to keep an offense like OSU under 35. Those first couple of games with an inexperienced and nicked up QB are becoming the outlier.

Also consider the high powered quick strike offense we currently have… that puts the D back on the field a lot faster and a lot more times than back then. We recruit well but its clear the depth and development is no where near previous buckeye standards..

I agree... I've said this in the UGA thread but I would kill to see this offense vs that defense in January in the playoffs. Could they hold us under 24? Not sure.

I completely disagree.. the depth is where it needs to be which is the DL and the secondary.

Thus secondary IMO can be the most terrifying we've ever had. Hickman is a LB with secondary speed and if we can get Young playing elite too? Look out. That'd be two guys at 220 who run like secondary players in our back 4. IMO we need to get to that personnel eventually.
