Game Thread Marshall at tOSU, Sat. Sep. 21, 12pm ET, FOX

I mean I get it but you can’t get a 15 yarder to kill the drive… we were obviously going to score on that drive too so there’s no need to take a unsportsmanlike penalty.

He can’t do that vs Oregon. Shoot he can’t do that next week.
Nah fuck that. The refs were GODAWFUL all day yesterday and this was the supreme bullshit call of the day (even worse than the TD that wasn't AND the targeting)....it was time to let them know how bullshit they were.

I'm just going to say - from re-reading this thread and being at the game...

The defense is fine. They were super super vanilla all game long. I'm betting it's a combination of not wanting to show much against a clearly inferior opponent and also not wanting to take unnecessary risks unless they had too. It just combined with Marshall's QB having the game of his life. Their running back runs hard too.

The best thing that could have happened, did happen. They have things to work on now and clean up. Another shutout wouldn't have helped them improve and grow. Do they have the talent to do that? Yes absolutely. But they needed yesterday more than they needed to completely dominate Marshall like some want every game now. There's nothing wrong with being pushed when there is this much talent.....if they are who we all hope they are as players, they'll learn from this and grow from it.

On the offensive side, there's not much you can say. Clubbing baby seals in a lot of ways. There was one play where people were screeching around me about Howard holding onto the ball too much (it was 21 or 28-7 at that point), and immediately saying he's Kyle McCord all over again, which is patently ridiculous. It just reminded me of why I don't go to games much anymore - I hate people.

Ahh well, Go Bucks.

Except he CAN kick it to the end zone. The first one nearly went through the entire end zone.

Clearly they were trying something. I'm not sure why, as it seemed unnecessary, but something was being attempted. That's on the coaches to explain.
That was brought up during the broadcast. The mentioned how a few years ago a coach came in and decided he was going to be in charge of Special Teams. Suddenly OSU was always kicking to the corner and had an unusual amount of kicks out of bounds. That coach was Urban Meyer.

Somewhere I believe I read that Day sat down with Tress and talked special teams, aka punting is the 'most important play' in football. Don't really understand how one can fiddle with a kick-off, but hey! what do I know. Probably going against some of the contributors up above, but thought that Howard is doing what he was hired to do, 'manage' the team's march down the field. No, he's not a 12 guage, with gun for an arm, but his intermediate and short passes are crisp and on target. Hence the higher completion percentage. With the talent in the RBs and WRs, they've got the shake, rattle, and roll enough to make big plays (what, six big plays yesterday?). Sure, would love to see a 70 yard pass play - 50 in the air and last 20 hoofing it, but, how one scores is not as important as that they score. Heartily agree with the RB duo could be the greatest in tOSU history. And we've had some great duos there.....(more learned folk insert here). Anyway, am happy that the OL did their job, and that we're rotating some underclassmen there, as four of the five (never certain about covid eligibility) are moving on after this year. Should pay dividends in the future. Go Bucks!

I agree..... I was wondering if the D was playing more preventative because they can. Playing on a 105 degree field with your arms tied behind your back is excellent training for challenges to come.

The offense is ridiculous. It seems like they can do whatever they want, without the long throws (at this point).

That was just Gus trying to be cute. That was when a fair catch couldn't be done outside of the endzone, and it brought it out to the 20. The risk was worth the reward. Now it's just stupid to not kick it 8 yards deep.

I think they’ll know due to Day etc yelling at them but he’s got to find a way not to kill a drive with a 15 yarder. I get sticking up for your team but that penalty could be more costly in a bigger game

Went back and rewatched the game yesterday and here are my bullet point thoughts:

- OL play was really spectacular, both in the pass and run game. Really the whole OL did well, but I noticed Jackson just dominating and it is good to see he hasn't missed a beat. Then Siereveld came in some and really looked good out there. Simmons was getting to the second level in the run and screen game, and excellent in pass protection. Marshall's DL seems like one of their best units and we really handled them. That is the most encouraging part of this game imo
- RB play, what can I say that hasn't been said. Trey and Judkins are very similar, and are both thunder and lightning. Judkins absolutely blew me away though, he might be the best RB in the country and Trey is right there. It is awesome to have Peoples behind them not only for depth, but so he can learn from two of the best before he likely takes over as RB1 next year.
- Great to see Egbuka get his turn to ball out. Smith and Tate looked really good as well, would like to see a little more of Innis but there is only one football.
- I think the TEs are going to be a non-factor in the passing game unless Thurman makes a leap. Really that is fine though if they block well because we have enough receiving threats.
- Howard continues to impress. Very accurate and almost 90% of the time seems to put the ball right where it has to be. Even on that INT, I have zero problems throwing that ball if it is to JJ Smith, he will come down with most of those throws. I am also very impressed by his decision making, the rare times he has thrown the ball away it is a very smart decision and something that will pay off in droves down the stretch.
- Now we move to defense...yuck. I'll start at a high level and say I'm not concerned at all because we know the talent we have on defense and Knowles' prowess when we aren't playing a super vanilla defense. But super vanilla it was and to top it off, nobody in the back 7 ever attacked the ball carrier and just waited for everything to come to them, with the exception of Downs and Ransom.
- To that last point, Simon, Styles and Hicks just sat there flat footed. My grade for LB was a D- and that better be a blip on the radar, and not a systemic problem.
- The DL play wasn't much better overall and Tyleik is much more important than I think we realized. Hamilton seemed non-existent, Sawyer and JT had a few plays but were very inconsistent (I actually saw JT getting whooped quite a few times), and most of the rotation guys didn't do much. Almost zero pressure on the QB for the most part. Only bright spots were Malone (he probably earned some PT, he played very well) and Curry until his clear targeting ejection. I would go as far to say the only one that probably gets graded a champion is Malone on the DL.
- The secondary was pretty damn good in coverage, Marshall's QB was just having the game of his life and their receivers were executing. Safety play was definitely a champion grade with Ransom and Downs, both played extremely well. Burke, Iggy and Hancock were in the right position in coverage most of the time and you know what they say about defending a perfect pass. Factor in that there was zero pass rush and I would say the secondary did a really nice job.
- The only thing to talk about on special teams is the 3 in a row kicks out of bounds that led Day to yank Fielding out. Hopefully he just had the yips and a bad day, but it also looks like we might have been trying a directional kick that Fielding wasn't comfortable with. That I don't know, just looked like he was trying to angle the kick to the left. Good on Day to at least get him out for the rest of that game and we'll see if it is a one time thing.

Overall a 49-14 win ain't bad...look at all the other top teams that have struggled against inferior opponents this season and you can't feel bad about that win. We have clear room for improvement in certain areas, but still had a very comfortable win. On to conference play.

Totally agreed with that INT Howard threw. That’s an INT that everyone should be okay with because JJ is one on one and if it’s somehow picked off then the other team has bad starting field position.

Also I agree with the LB play. I think Marshall did a very nice job manipulating a light box. I actually prefer that style myself to then run the ball because there’s a numbers advantage. They forced our LBs to be the stars of the day and for a half our LBs were not up for the moment. Like you mentioned just a ton of flat feet. I think that’s because our LBs were afraid of missing a tackle because if they did it was off to the races.
