Snyder says Marshall hasn’t called about coaching job

Ohio State defensive coordinator Mark Snyder said he has not been contacted about the Marshall headcoaching position.

Thundering Herd coach Bob Pruett resigned Wednesday. Snyder is a former Marshall player and coach.

He was a captain and starting safety on the 1987 Division I-AA national runnerup team, graduated in 1988 and was a student assistant coach later that year.

Also, Snyder and his wife, Beth, are natives of Ironton, Ohio, which is about 20 miles from the Huntington, W.Va., campus.

Other than saying he has not been contacted, Snyder yesterday had no comment.

He is entering his second year as OSU’s defensive coordinator after three years as linebackers coach. He previously coached at Youngstown State, Minnesota and Central Florida.

In January, Snyder reportedly was offered the job of defensive coordinator at Louisiana State but turned it down.

Marshall athletics director Bob Marcum formed a committee Thursday to conduct a nationwide search for Pruett’s replacement. This fall, Marshall is moving from the Mid-American Conference into Conference USA.

Pruett made $230,000 last season in base salary plus radio and television deals. That does not include a variety of incentives, outside income sources and deferred compensation. Snyder made $185,000.

Untill MU hires a coach not named Snyder I will remain concerned.

Judging from his comments Snyder was basically stating that he would listen to an offer from Marshall. Not that I blame him for looking into the opportunity to move up, but it always is concerning when comments are as broad as his were.

I agree that Snyder's comments don't look all that promising for Buckeye Nation. However, while it's true that it was his first year as D coordinator last year, I must say that I wasn't all that impressed with his decisions at times. That being said, I think it would hurt us to have to replace him this far into the offseason -- it seems that with a coaching position as crucial as D coordinator, you'd like to know your coach was going to leave at the end of the season so you could better plan for how you will respond.

I heard through the grapevine that Marshall is going to stick with the coach that they have right now at least for this season. If that doesn't work out Snyder will be their coach after this coming season. Pruett planned his retirement so that Marshall would have no choice but to hire his guy. Hopefully that will give JT a chance to plan for Snyder leaving.

Seems to me that Marshall needs to hire someone "in-house," at least for the one season. I'd imagine that if they went after an outside prospect, the transition time may be too much, and he won't be much of a part of spring practice.

I agree - if Marshall wants Snyder, they'll get one of their assistants to be HC for one year and hire Snyder in November or December.

He handles southern Ohio, and most of the southern states. I think Heacock is actually the point man in Florida now (used to be Conley of course), but Snyder handles the rest of the south.

MORGANTOWN — Scoop from Huntington to Morgantown, but not one point in between:

As the Gazette first reported, Hurricane native John “Doc’’ Holliday, now an assistant to Urban Meyer at Florida, interviewed for the open Marshall football job on Tuesday.
Sources say Holliday flew to Huntington from Gainesville and met with MU interim president Michael Farrell, athletic director Bob “Kayo’’ Marcum, the school’s Board of Trustees and lawyers before returning home.

Holliday is expected to be the last candidate brought in by the MU higher-ups. Interim coach Larry Kueck has yet to be interviewed. Ohio State assistant Mark Snyder is also in the mix.

Farrell acknowledged on Tuesday he interviewed a candidate and said he expects a decision within 10 days.

West Virginia’s football coaching staff is hoping for some very good news in June.
During this past recruiting cycle, one area of need for the Mountaineers was linebacker. WVU signed in-state players Zac Cooper and Reed Williams as well as Steve Weedon from Maryland.

But the knockout signing at the position was a late one from Johnny Holmes of Rockledge, Fla. Holmes received offers from schools like Florida and Tennessee after being named Brevard County’s defensive player of the year. When his academic status was in doubt, however, the SEC schools had to back off. WVU rolled the dice and signed him. And may get a nice payoff.

“We signed him with the idea he’d be a [Prop 48 recruit],’’ said Mountaineer recruiting coordinator Herb Hand. “But he may make it.’’

Hand said Holmes fared better on his SAT than expected. The coaches will find out if the player qualifies in June.

While touching upon recruiting, University High linebacker/fullback Cory Jackson has received a scholarship offer from ex-Pitt coach Walt Harris, now the man at Stanford.
Michigan State, Purdue, Maryland, Pitt, Ohio State and WVU have been in touch, but Harris was the first to pull the trigger.
