Mark Sanchez (Philadelphia Eagles)

Did he say he thinks he could compete for the starting job, or just for early playing time. If Zwick lives up to the hype, he could see plenty of time in mop up duty, and if Zwick doesn't, the starting job might be wide open.

BuckNutty: Sanchez seems very aware of the depth chart here. Would you want a kid who is scared off by competition or a kid who sees an opportunity despite it?

I hope he is indeed aware of the depth chart and is not afraid of competition. I'm not a premium subscriber, so I don't know if he said if he wanted complete for the starting job or for early playing time.

If he has the skills that they say he does and he has a competitive fire, then I hope we stay at the top of his list.

I am just paraphrasing what Sanchez said. The quote was something along the lines of seeing a good opportunity for a quarterback in this class. I'm sure he's not talking about mopping up but I suppose that could be what he means. Sanchez has serious skills. Some of these incoming freshmen, right or wrong, believe they can beat out anyone for a job and at this point Zwick and Smith are unnknown commodities, especially to a kid who lives on the west coast. If either one shines this year I'm sure Ohio State will be less attractive.

“The way things are it looks like there might be a good opportunity for a quarterback in this class,”

He says nothing about playing time, hopefully he is thinking that he could come in redshirt and have 3 years to be the starter after beating out a not highly recruited gray-shirt.

Sounds like a smart kid, hope we land him.

I doubt he's talking about holding a clip board for two years. No matter what he meant I just hope we take our best shot landing him. That would have to include an official visit where he could catch a game in the Shoe.

I agree BuckNutty. Looking at the guys we already have for this year, plus the guys we are in on, I think we are on the verge of pulling in a banner class for this year - the kind of class many thought we should have had last year following the NC. Sanchez would obviously provide a big boost in that direction.

FWIW, the link in this thread reminded me of just how annoying the Ozone forums are. That site is cool for firsthand news and pics, but their forums suck in a big way. Any place where it is acceptable to place your entire post in the title is way uncool.

Enter At Own Risk

Saw this post over on the O-Zone. Buster Avis, is that you??

Nutty- I don't know if that is true but I sure could believe that Nader Abdallah was helping to recruit him. He will be a future leader of the team.

Getting a commitment from a high profile QB early (before the end of the summer) could do nothing but help recruiting.

I read the link onto BNuts. He sounds like a really great kid who totally enjoyed our coaches and our campus. That's fantastic news. You gotta love Tressel and crew. Those guys know just how to present themselves: As Ohio guys. Genuine and nice. Living in Florida, I get a perspective on that. This kid seems like he really appreciated that aspect.

What a cool dad, too. Flying with his son all around the country to visit some of the top-flight programs. That's real cool.

Definitely, OSU's depth at QB has to be about as appealing as it gets for the schools on Sanchez's list. USC has Booty and Hinds, who were both highly recruited, and maybe Olsen too. scum has Gutierrez, Richard, and now Henne. Nebraska just got Beck.

Texas is about the only big school I can think of that has less top-notch QB depth, and they seem to be right in the hunt for Perrilloux.

Let's see how Sanchez is feeling in a few weeks after his OSU visit isn't so fresh in his mind. So far, so good...

"Compared to other major programs, the depth chart at OSU is probably as good as it gets for a prospective QB. Especially as compared to USC who is absolutely loaded at the position"

I agree, look at the other schools that have a competed for a NC in the last few years. Is going to a school where you will likely be the starter for 3 year that bad? I cannot think of many opportunities better than that? I guess he could get that at ND and maybe better at Florida or Texas if their QB leave early. If he wants to go to a powerhouse our depth charts look pretty good. Learn for 2 years then start for three; sign me up, it played out that way for zwick.

FWIW, I could see Zwick/Smith's performance being important for a couple reasons.

First, if Zwick/Smith do horrible this year, demonstrating the lack of a quality QB to run our offense, then Sanchez could clearly view that as a positive...because it could mean early playing time...but that almost certainly means another year of boring offense, which could actually hurt our chances.

Looking at it the opposite way, if Zwick/Smith has a great year, moves the offense quite well, then we can shake that image we've gotten over the past two years of having a boring offense...and maintain our other image...winning A LOT!

If Sanchez is interesting in winning championships, then he'll be hard pressed to find many situations better for him. We can offer, at the very least, playing by redshirt sophomore year, a team that won a national title recently and has actually upgraded in talent since, lots and lots of attention from the media and scouts, and a team that doesn't have a roster full of 5-star QB's just like him.

Why is everything scarlet colored in here all of a sudden...must be these glasses I'm wearing.

IMO, Troy Smith is a future RB/WR. Zwick still has a lot to prove. The QB position at OSU is wide open for a guy like Sanchez. Let's hope that he sees the light (and brings Kevin Bemoll with him).
