Mark May (Blew 5 guys at Pitt)

Just what E$PN wanted...

Normally I TiVO College Game Day for no other reason than to watch Herbie and Corso. Say what you will... they ARE entertainment. Herbie the straight guy and Corso the fool... but at least he knows his part of the fool and play to it well.

Anyhow, I just realized this year how often I employ my 30-second skip button when Mark May opens his pie hole. I'd rather sit through a commercial block than listen to his crap.

So, E$PN wins. I skip the MM content and watch the commericals?

Going to have to rethink my pre-game strategy.

He picked USC over LSU in his mythical title game, proving without a doubt that he was correct at the start of the year.

Well now wait a minute here. Mark May might just have something here. Let's take a look.

2007 USC Trojans unofficial resume as compared to Ohio State.

Ohio State (11-1) lost a game to a BCS qualifier (9-3) Illinois.

USC (10-2) lost a game to conference doormat (4-8) Stanford by one point AT HOME (Uggggggg!!!!) and a game to Oregon (with Dixon) on road (Can't fault them too much for that one but it's still a loss).

USC defeated only 2 teams (yes that was a 2) that finished with a better than .500 record this year (Arizona State, Oregon State). For reference, Ohio State beat 5 opponents with greater than .500 records this year (not counting YSU).

USC's best victory came against (10-2) Arizona State, a very good team right? Well maybe not, ASU only beat one team this season that finished with a better than .500 record (Oregon State). Ohio State's best victory...at Michigan, at Penn State, or Wisconson take your pick. All good wins but none of them seems to be that great from a national perspective.

Oh look, just for reference, it appears that Ohio State and USC each played a common opponent in 2007 (Washington) with both games being played at the same location (at Washington) just a few short weeks apart from eachother. Those results: Ohio State wins 33-14 and USC wins 27-24. So Ohio State both scored more points and allowed fewer points than USC did.

Hmmmmm.......that clinches it in my book!

Mark May is right! USC is clearly the best team for 2007. It's a down right tragedy that the Trojans have been overlooked for this years Championship Game! Obviously, USC is better than LSU as well. As a matter of fact, if you combined all the best players of Ohio State and LSU together to form a single team, THE Ohioana State Tigereyes, USC would still win the Championship 137-3! Right Mark May?

Enough about USC! I can't wait to see the Buckeyes play them the next 2 years!

First things first.....bring on LSU!!! Mark May you can just go suck it!!!!

Go Buckeyes!!!!!

...I would like to suggest that we rename this thread "Mark May: The stupid things he says".

...We could record the stupid things he says in the same fashion as we capture things in the Police Blotter thread.
What a waste of time. Really, streaming audio of Mark May would accomplish the same thing.

Warning: rant follows

I really can't understand why we debate the opinions of these "sports journalists". I had lunch last week with someone intimately connected to one of the ESPN announcers. He indicated to my friend over dinner a few weeks ago that his "part" on ESPN is totally scripted and that he has almost no room to give any personal opinion. He is angry about being made to look like a fool all the time but gets paid so much to do it that he feels it would be crazy to quit. When I rolled my eyes, my friend told me that he'd known the announcer for more than twenty years and considered him one of the most intelligent people he ever met. My friend is a fellow professor who is internationally known for his work on corporate governance.

Guys, take a step back for a couple of days and just listen to the stereotypical roles these jackasses play. It is so bloody transparent that it becomes funny.

Team X doesn't deserve to be there. Ohio State officially blew its coaching search. USC is dirty as hell and someone must pay (i.e., methomps, hand them over now). Kirk Ferentz is civilization's most misunderstood genius. Charlie Weis is God's gift to schematic advantages, then, whoopsie, he's an idiot.

They crap on a team to make all its foes feel great and then give that team a little love to bring their fans back in when the market research shows that they are starting to resent the crap so much they are tuning out.

Last year, I sat in the live marketing research operations at major theme parks in California and Florida as they showed fans alternative plots of TV programs, which included sports. And they are doing live marketing research every day as they monitor how fans are reacting to these scripted morons.

ESPN is part of Disney, for goodness sakes. It is not about journalism or serious analysis, it is about scripted entertainment.

They don't care if people are tuning in to love or hate them. The more that they get people like us to talk about the stupid things they say, the higher their ratings. The higher their ratings the more money they make.

So, who cares if Mark May picks eight teams in a fictional playoff or has an affair with Trev Alberts or Lou Holtz? May is a highly paid shill whose job is to stick to a script that is designed to keep all the suckers coming back for more. The opinions he expresses show less than one-tenth of the insight that leading BP posters share on a frequent basis.

Thank you. I feel better now for having said that.

I said something similar after their bowl special, in the sense that after the BCS games were announced, May sat there and basically trashed Ohio State for a few minutes, then they went to a commercial. When they came back from the break, May was magically talking about how LSU would have trouble with "OSU's physical offensive line". Now this was such a sudden and complete departure from what he had just been saying that it had to have ben prompted by someone during the break. No doubt about it.

That said, if someone is going to take money to sit there and say what they pay them to say, they are still a tool. It's basically equivalent to the mic work in professional wrestling, only they can actually be entertaining sometimes because some of them have charisma. These ESPN wonks are old jocks and coaches who couldn't find a personality in a Where's Waldo game.

How come Mark May continues to say Ohio State backed into the title game, failing to mention that LSU also backed into the title game?

double standard anyone?

It's the SEC speed, they were moving so fast backwards, they looked like they were moving forwards, or something like that:tongue2:

IMO May hasn't been that bad lately. While he's not completely pro-tOSU, he has given them credit when they've deserved it.

I disagree. On ESPN today, May said Ohio State backed into the title game...lacks team speed...they're going to lose to LSU...that he has OSU ranked around 5th...and when asked which team might be next season's pre-season no #1, he rambled off a list of 5 teams and none were Ohio State.

What an idiot. Virtually Ohio State's entire team will return next year. If OSU achieved the #1 spot this year (and given the team should be even better next year), then how could he NOT have OSU among the top 5 for next season?

I lost any remaining respect I had for him.
