For people new to OS X, here are a couple downloads that should help. Just google it, I don't have time to post links right now...

Video

Perian - open source DIVX codecs for Quicktime. Every codec you need in one file that updates itself.
Flip4Mac - lets you play WMV's in Quicktime
VLC - it plays everything, and looks nicer in OS X!

Utilities

Quicksilver - Just download this program now. It's an extensible app launcher, but it does so much more that I can't explain it succinctly. Download it now!
MenuMeters - stats in your menu bar
iStat - stats on your dashboard if you so prefer

Internet/Torrents

Transmission - Best lightweight client out there. You can get Azureus, but it is still a resource hog on OS X.
Firefox/Camino - My biggest knock on OS X is that neither Firefox/Camino, or Safari by itself can get the job done for me. Maybe when Firefox 3 comes out I won't need 2 browsers, but who knows. Safari is lightning quick, which is why I use it most of the time, but every once in a while it doesn't render a page properly, and thats when I turn to Camino. Always good to have another browser just in case Safari can't load something (usually quite rare, but it's good to have).

Also, I recently ran across a great site for Mac news and some good deals on some refurbished and used Macs if you're looking into buying.

Low End Mac: The Mac Experience

Also, because I'm bored and trying to stay awake, here are the links to Rocketman's post:

Perian - Perian - The swiss-army knife of QuickTime? components
Flip4Mac - Flip4Mac - Digital Media Tools for the Mac
VLC-VLC media player - Overview

Quicksilver - Blacktree - then click on Quicksilver
Menu Meters - MenuMeters 1.3 - MacUpdate
Istat - Apple - Downloads - Dashboard Widgets - iStat pro

Transmission - Transmission
Camino - Camino. Mozilla Power, Mac Style

Thanks for the great info Rocketman...

For years, Mac users have long been rightfully smug about their platform's relative immunity to virus and malware attacks, but it's inevitable that those days will eventually come to an end. (As the Mac gains in popularity, it also earns more attention from malware developers, and it's this lack of malware being actively developed, not some special, inherent security, that have really kept the Mac a "safe" platform for the time being.)......continued

Over the weekend the power adapter for my MacBook Pro quit working. After looking at a replacement, it looks like the Apple brand 85w adapter is $79, while there appear to be some knock-offs on ebay for $25. Does anyone have any insight on what the detriments might be to going with the less expensive, non-Apple charger? Any advice is appreciated.

If you don't mind destroying your computer. My brother in law did that (it was for a Dell though). As soon as he plugged it in you could smell burning electronics.

Buy the legit one. Can't take a chance on the power you are putting into your PC.

Now this is all greek to me. I need moron compatible. I firmly believe computers only work due to magic. Magic, "him gone" call tech support for more magic.

Put me in the "undecided" column. I got a Mac last year when they were closing out one model and bringing the next one on line. Also had parallels program added to it. Because it was an "old" model I got the book for about the price of an HP or Inova of similar abilities. (Also didn't like the fact that MS refused to allow me to buy a new HP or Inova without Vista)

I love the fact that I did not have to contend with the latest Windows Vista edition -- which sucks majorly and again was put on the market with too many bugs to be worked out-- but the connection between Mac and Windows is not always 100% and it leads to some problems.

I love the fact that most virus alerts don't involve Mac. It seems to me to be a well made, dependable machine, though I've had more lock ups and re boot situations than I had with any non-Mac product since the introduction of the laptop with 2 gig hard drive.

I still find myself running most of the time in Parallels, i.e. Windows. I'm not enamored of the filing system and I'm not interested in learning how to do things the Mac way. I'm luke warm at best.

Oh, and I should add that when you call Mac for help you don't end up in Swat Valley or the shores of Baliwood. I like talking to my fellow citizens.
