LSU Tigers (official thread)

i tried to avoid this discussion all season.
@Fishhh lured me in a couple times though.

I’m going to completely ignore anything O did prior to being named interim in 2016 when saying this part.

I think what we just saw may have been the absolute PERFECT marriage between the right guy/system and a generational type QB.

I give Burrow a ton of credit because i see him doing things that aren’t really coachable. His presence and feel for the pocket, his accuracy even while on the move, his field vision, etc.

I give Brady a metric shit-ton of credit. Why? because i’ve seen this almost exact cast of characters (minus Brady) last year and it didn’t look like this. At all.

O has been here since September 2016.
So we’ve seen him in 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019.

One of those 4 is an extreme outlier. A ridiculously extreme outlier.

I need to see something semi-resembling this again before i’m sold that the remaining pieces were as big a part as those that are now gone.

Either way you got a title out of it. I'm jealous

So essentially LSU had their greatest season ever, and next year they will be back to normal(I.e. getting owned by Bama, blowing games they should win, great defense, average QB and offense and only being remembered by the ramblings of Cos h Cookie Monster)

Orgeron made one very good hire. Who's to say he doesn't make another? Besides, if I'm an LSU fan, I don't give a shit. O's had one real shot at a natty so far, and he's cashed it in. As a fan of probably the most consistent of all of the great NCAAF powers, and also one that doesn't have a great track record of cashing in its frequent opportunities to sit at the very top of the mountain, it's frankly aggravating. Don't get me wrong. It's great to always be near the top, but I don't know that we have much to say to any other program about blowing great opportunities. If at some point OSU wants to start winning 50% or more of the games in which it has equal or lesser talent, that would be great.

I hope it all works out, Nutriaitch. LSU is, by leaps and bounds, the lesser evil in the SEC West.

He very well may.
But like I said earlier, he has to make multiple hires like this before he just get the benefit of doubt.

My rule is that when a coach wins a natty for me, however the stars aligned, he gets three years off from me bitching about him (there's probably some evidence that I violated that rule during the 2015 MSU game, but it's still my rule even if I occasionally fail to follow it in the heat of the moment).

In fall of 2008, a few months after LSU had beaten OSU for the natty, I was SCUBA diving on a small boat and the other 6 or so divers were a group of LSU fans. First they gave me some mild shit since I had an OSU cap on, which was fine, but then they went on and on bitching about how much Miles sucked. I wanted to cut their ingrate air hoses like a villain from a Connery or Moore era Bond movie ...

BTW, this is basically my same beef with Gator fans who castigate Meyer: The man got you two (of your three total) nattys in six years and didn't leave you on probation so fuck off with the whining about how the program wasn't in perfect shape when he left.

I was all in on Miles a lot sooner.

he won 11 games in ‘05 (should have been in a BCS bowl)
did it again in ‘06 (went to and won a BCS bowl)
then won 12 games and a Natty in ‘07.

so by that offseason, 11 wins was the norm.

O on the other hand, well this ain’t anywhere remotely close to his “norm”.

now i’m not predicting that he’ll return to what was considered his norm before 2019.
And i’m not going to bitch about him either (although i have a very strong suspicion @Fishhh will try to get me to for the NCG recap podcast).

I’m only saying I’m not going just blindly accept that THIS is the real Ed O and the previous 34 years of his coaching career were the anomaly.

oh and bonus points for telling Gator fans to fuck off

@Nutriaitch and @Fishhh, at what point in the future will your podcast for this championship be up? Definitely listening to that one!

not sure yet. Fishhh is a little overloaded with work right now, so probably be a few days later than normal.

yeah, he needs to stay away from the program for a while.

Didn’t click your link, but assuming it’s the Jefferson video.
Was widely assumed he was leaving after this year for a while now. This pretty much forces his hand to make it official.

One thing Coach O does have going for him (and this will be advantageous for LSU for years to come) is he's one of the all-time great recruiters in college football. He recruited guys like Warren Sapp and Cortez Kennedy at Miami and nearly lured Adrian Peterson away to USC. I think LSU can rely more on talent than above-average coaching like those Miami and USC teams of years past, but they are more unstoppable with a great assistant like Brady on its coaching staff.
