LSU fan recommendations for your visit to NOLA and the game

Welcome to NOLA

Some recommendations:

Central grocery for a muffuletta (923 Decatur St.). It will be crowded but the line usually moves fast. Take it to the river (a short walk) and eat it while enjoying a great view.

Roast beef po-boy from Mother?s (with debris) (401 Poydras St.). Other great po-boy places already mentioned are Domilise and Parkway Bakery (my favorite). They are all great but Mother?s is the most convenient if you are near the FQ/CBD.

Mandina?s for shrimp/oyster po-boys, trout amandine, turtle soup, gumbo and more (3800 Canal St.) A short ride from the FQ?by street car or taxi.

Those are a few of my favorites for great local, not high end dining.

Finer Dining: Brigsten?s (723 Dante/504 861-7610); Bayona (430 Dauphine/504 525-4455); Clancy?s (6100 Annunciation/504 895-1111). Bayona is in the FQ. The others are uptown so you should take a taxi. You will need reservations. Those are just a few that many locals frequent?there are lots more?

Steaks: Someone asked about it in another post. Is there a Ruth?s Chris in your city? Ruth?s Chris was started in NOLA. I began eating at the original location when I was a child (known as Chris? before Ruth Fertel took over). The ?second? location in NOLA was not rebuilt after the storm (much to the chagrin of the locals, including my family). There is one in Metairie, a suburb, and it is about a 20 minute ride from the FQ. If steak is what you want Ruth?s Chris is hard to beat. It is expensive and you will need a reservation. 3633 Veterans/504 888-3600.

Hamburgers: Port of Call (838 Esplanade Ave.)

More NOLA information...

Touring: D-Day/National WWII museum (945 Magazine St.?enter on Andrew Higgins Dr.) So much to see?

Historic New Orleans Collection is currently featuring a Sugar Bowl exhibit covering the history of the games since 1935 (533 Royal St.?in the FQ). Well, maybe too much SEC for you guys but there are some cool pieces.

I know this might sound odd but many visitors enjoy the cemetery tours. You can do it on a guided van/bus tour or on your own. Catch a streetcar on Canal St. and it will take you to the intersection of Canal and City Park Ave. where there are a number of cemeteries to visit. (You can stop along the way to eat at Mandina?s.) If you want to learn the history the guided tour is best.

?Disaster? tours. It is somewhat of a downer but an eye opening experience that will provide a much better understanding than what you can glean from the media. Worth noting: it is not just the tourist areas that are back. There are many neighborhoods that have been rebuilt and look great.

The Game: I am thrilled LSU and OSU are playing. I will be at the game. I bought my tickets from a Michigan fan! I do think the media has gone overboard about the ?home field? advantage talk. OSU is going to be well represented by hordes of proud, screaming fans.

The people down here are very friendly and I believe you guys will be treated well. As others have noted, every team has obnoxious fans so there will be smack talk from the vocal few on both sides. (I stopped reading forums like those on ESPN because the smack from the vocal few was just ridiculous.) None of my many LSU friends and acquaintances believes for one second that LSU is going to blow out OSU. To the contrary, they all respect OSU and are looking forward to a hard fought game.

Good luck and enjoy your visit.

Preservation Hall

Another must I haven't seen...

Preservation Hall

Masters...absolute masters.

We took a Haunted History Tour of the Quarter - great time, lots of knowledge. Started right across the street from Preservation Hall.

My son and I stopped and toured St. Louis Cemetary - the one that supposedly has the grave of Marie Laveaux (I can never remember if it's #1 or #2).

I've eaten lunch at Petunia's - great food. Treated me as a solo diner better than anywhere I've ever been in the country.

Home Page

A couple other things that I enjoyed during my time in LA...

Take a day trip west on I-10, cross the river then drive through Atchafalaya Swamp...beautiful. On the other side is the town of Breaux Bridge - get off at the exit with the Pilot Travel Center and drive south into the town. There is a small (really small) house/diner with amazing catfish. When we went in, there were a couple of older ladies sitting a one of the tables cleaning shrimp.

Go a little further west to Lafayette and drive south to New Iberia - beautiful little town, lots of history and very close to Avery Island - home of the Tobasco Company. Yeah, the Tobasco tour is kind of cool, but the driving tour through the Gardens is incredible...even when all the flowers aren't in bloom.

If you're travelling down I-10 from Baton Rouge, right before you get to Lake Ponchetrain is a town called La Place. Again, right down the street (and on the same side) from the Pilot Travel Center is a great little bar with awesome food. For some reason, the name Bully's comes to mind, but I might be wrong.

We are planning to do a winery tour. Most of them are north of Baton Rouge. And, on our way out of town on the 9th, we are driving through Abita Springs to stop at the brewery. I loves my Purple Haze on tap!

Wanted to separate this...

Thanks to the LA locals for all the tips...

My first visit to New Orleans, I was alone. I started my day in the middle of the afternoon. As I walked down Bourbon Street, I wandered into a bar. Turns out it was one of the gay bars. The man I was sitting next to figured out pretty quick I wasn't a local girl and proceeded to talk to me. Turns out he was a native of Perrysburg, OH - who'da figured that?

He gave me some important advice. "Lose the purse, girl!". Seriously - ladies - do not carry a purse, especially at night. Keep your cash, ID and credit card if you must, in your front pocket. Remove the temptation. When I went for Mardi Gras, I bought a little bag for my camera that slid over my belt - keep your hands free. If you decide to go with a fanny pack, don't turn it to the back, keep it in the front.

Another thing he told me - if you are walking down a less than crowded street, stick to the sides without the parked cars. That leaves less hiding places for those morons just waiting to take advantage of the situation.

Have fun, see all you can see...

If you have time while ya down here come down to the bayous in Terrebonne and you will find some good seafood. Boudreaux and Thibodaux's is a good place to eat. And if you wanna see some authentic cajun zydeco and dancin go to the Jolly Inn (also got some goood food).

that's it!

JAMnola...

Thanks! Something I definitely wanted to do - just didn't know which way to turn. Spent an evening at some "fish camps" around Biloxi and had a great time.

Terrebonne is on the maps, right?

Terrebonne Parish on the Eastern part of Acadiana. Houma is the major city there, many restaurants and stores (mostly on MLK Blvd.) It is SW of New orleans, about 45 min. away. From Louis Armstrong airport take the I-10 exit South to 310, then 310 past the Luling bridge to 90. Take 90 to Houma, you will either end up on Hollywood Road, or at the exit by Troop C.

What does everyone recommend for parking? Ideally I need something long term over the five days I am there. If not I have a place to park Friday (hopefully), and will move my car elsewhere Saturday.

Anyone in New Orleans with some extra spots around their house? I will be happy to buy you a few drinks, dinner etc to return the favor. I have a group of about twenty going down (ages 20-24) so naturally we have one too many vehicles.

Thanks in advance for any help or recommendations.

Parking

Your ability to find parking will depend on whether you are looking to tailgate where you park, or if you're just looking for a place to keep a car. Parking over the weekend near the dome is going to be tough for tailgating if you don't have a spot reserved yet. Central Parking (5045253952) operates most of the lots, but they've been sold to tailgating groups in bunches of 20 or more spots starting Friday. There may be some single spots available, but doubtful.

I suggest that when you get into town Friday, you wander through the tailgaters in the area near the Dome bounded by Loyola, Poydras, Howard and the river. The lot owners are making everyone claim their spots on Friday and are turning over "security" of those lots to the renters, so it will be busy. See if someone will sell you a spot inside their area. Because the spaces were sold in such bulk, there should be people looking to sell off some of their spaces. I suspect you can make some new LSU friends who will squeeze you in. That's what I'd do if I was looking for a good spot near the game.

If you're just looking for a place to keep the car, it'll be a little easier, but could still be a little costly downtown. Do NOT try to save $$ by parking on the fringes of the Quarter overnight or longer.

Thanks for the help! Yes I am just looking for a place to keep the car for the duration of my group's stay.

Another Parking Question

Any good ideas on what to do in terms of getting down to bourbon area from kennar (staying at hilton garden inn by airport)? Obviously there are cabs, but going back and forth for sat, sun, and mon could be expensive. Is there any type of park and ride or any other options that anybody knows of?
