No vBet on this - I'll guess about 1 day.

Personally, I don't think the Willie Lyles thing is going to mean much for LSU. From what I can tell, what they acquired wasn't vastly overpriced or worthless (as in Oregon's case). Any package of high school players is bound to have some guys that have already committed to other schools, unless it's specifically made for a small set of players. Tailoring it like that would mean extra time and expense - it's easier just to send a group package out for a period of a few months, and let the schools look at the guys they're interested in.

with what has come out so far, I'm not concerned about the Willie Lyles situation.

However, if anything else comes out, I'll really start drinking heavily.

If a few guys on a video have already committed somewhere else, that seems normal. It's not like Oregon getting a package for 2011 recruits that was comprised almost entirely of 2009 recruits.

"committed" don't mean shit.
until a guy signs on the loi, he can still be actively recruited.

As far as having Shepard probably missing the opener against Oregon, I don't think that's more than 1 serious night of drinking for Nutria.

Shepard missing the opener would not be tragic for us.
He has never developed into the talent everyone thought he would be. Dude is good, and could be quite useful for us, but not impossible to replace.

Whole thing is going to hinge on how long he's been living in that apartment (and who paid for it obviously).

Local rumors are swirling all over the place on this one.
Rumors range from him living off campus since joining the team, to moving there sometime this summer.

I'm not liking the way this week has gone down so far.

1st, we got the probation that's gotten some air play. Then the willie Lyles video situation got a lot of talk. Which brought up the Peterson question back into the fore front, and now this.

Us being on probation for giving a guy improper housing benefits makes the Shepard deal look like it could be a pattern.

I haven't hit the bottle too hard yet, but I am stocking up on Scotch just in case this all takes a turn for the worst.

this what is being reported by a local beat writer (his sources are usually decent, but not enough to call them ironclad):

  • Shep moved into off campus housing with his girlfriend (who is an employee of athletic department).
  • the payment agreement may have been out of compliance with the NCAA.
  • because it's a new development brought to LSU officials quickly, it shouldn't affect his eligibility
  • if he weren't scheduled to speak at media days, it probably would have stayed under the radar
  • LSU officials being very cautious due to the ongoing Lyles investigation + recent probation

Reading the above is somewhat encouraging to me. I won't relax on it until it plays out though.

Shaq is one of the few athletes that would surprise me to find out wasn't legit while in school due to his background and upbringing.

I'm not foolish enough to think it couldn't have happened though.

But Shaq came from a family that was in good financial shape (not rich, but not poor either) with a military father figure (not his biological dad, but the man who raised him) and had his head screwed on right even as a teenager.

now that obviously doesn't mean he ain't capable to taking a handout, he just doesn't fit the profile of who normally would.

Oh boy...

Louisiana governor John Bel Edwards said Thursday in a televised speech that if the state does not address its budget crisis, college sports—namely LSU football—could be canceled beginning in April, according to The Times-Picayune.

Edwards has proposed a series of tax increases that he says Louisiana lawmakers must accept in order to prevent state-funded healthcare and higher education institutions from running out of money on April 30.

“Student athletes across the state would be ineligible to play next semester,” Edwards said. “I don’t say this to scare you. But I am going to be honest with you.

“If you are a student attending one of these universities, it means that you will receive a grade of incomplete, many students will not be able to graduate, and student-athletes across the state at those schools will be ineligible to play next semester. That means you can say farewell to college football next fall.”

If Edwards’s tax proposal to fix Louisiana’s $940 million deficit is accepted, it would save only the Tigers’ 2016 season, as the state faces a $2 billion budget shortfall for the following fiscal year

Read this today as well. Does anyone else think that LSU not fielding a football team would ever REALLY happen? I understand the reasoning that is behind it...that the school would have to shut down, creating grades of incomplete for the athletes and thus causing them to be ineligible. Plus, with no school, there is no team. However, this will never happen. Does the governor really think he will scare people in to approving a gigantic tax hike based on peoples fears of this?

LSU football doesnt turn a profit?

The football team most definitely turns a profit. What is happening here is a gigantic deficit (950 million) that will cause the entire school to close. I read where some people are thinking that it is stupid to shut down football because it is a money maker and they are short on money but it isn't about choosing to shut down football. Football, along with everything else would be a casualty of the school being shut down. I just find it hard to believe that would ever happen. This just seems more as if the governor trying scare tactics to approve the largest tax hike in Louisiana history.

We're talking about Louisiana here it's only a small step up from Mississippi. Sorry Nutria "with all due respect"
