I suppose it's like this... I love my kids. I am in love with my wife. My kids have my absolute love. My wife, however, has my conditional love. My kids, on the other hand, will always have my love no matter what they do.

Conditional love (or, being in love), by the way, isnt comparative a "bad" or "lesser" thing.... it's more about the depth of the emotion and the "conditions" I mean some people's relationships survive pretty awful things... while others get divorsed at the drop of a hat...

But storge is love in the sense of appreciation. For example, I love vanilla ice cream. So I doubt that is "in love". That leaves either philia or eros.

I happen to think you can "love" many in this world... the love of a close friend, a distant relative, someone who makes you feel good/safe/comfortable... I think we can chose who we "love."

to be "in love" though is to have such a strong emotion for someone you can never get enough of that person. I don't think we have a choice in who we are "in love" with, it just happens.

or maybe when you cut through all the BS it really is just the difference between beer and a bbq sammich?
