The ESPN talking heads seem to be avoiding the question of where to rank Rutgers. Assuming there are no upsets among the top-10, I'm willing to comfortably move them ahead of ND and West Virginia, but not ahead of Florida or Texas. That leaves Auburn, Cal, USC, and Arkansas for consideration.

I think they should stay behind Cal, Auburn, and USC. I know that Arkansas won at Auburn, but Arkansas's non-conference record consists of wins over Utah St., La-Monroe, and SE Missouri State, and a 50-14 home loss to USC. So Rutgers goes ahead of Arkansas in my book, and West Virginia and Louisville are both dead as far as the BCS Championship game goes.

Here's how I'd rank the teams that still have a shot at Glendale, as of today:

TSUN
Texas
Florida
Auburn
USC
Cal
Rutgers
Arkansas
ND

This makes a tOSU/TSUN rematch more likely. If the unthinkable happens on 11/18, how could voters drop a tOSU team that lost to the new #1 team below a Texas team that tOSU defeated 24-7 in Austin?

I agree with BuckWrestler141 and others about Rutgers chances.

Louisville has the best chance of not losing anymore games among themselves, Rutgers and West Virginia.

If the worst happened and we lost to TSUN, I think we would drop below Texas and out of consideration for the NC. Put a lackluster half up against NW, like we did last week, and there is no doubt that this would be true.

Pollsters probably will ensure TSUN will have no chance to get to the NC game if they lose to Ohio State, even if the game is close.

There is a lot of football left. In order, Florida, USC, Texas, Cal, and Auburn seem most likely to meet Ohio State in Arizona, in my opinion.

Rutgers unlikely to get title call

Louisville was supposed to be the Big East team that took a big step toward the national championship game with a victory over Rutgers on Thursday night.
Instead, the Scarlet Knights pulled another upset, and now they're one of two unbeaten teams left among the six BCS conferences.
So Rutgers now becomes the favorite to join either Ohio State or Michigan in the title game, right? Unlikely. The Scarlet Knights were only 13th in the latest BCS standings.
Rutgers would need either a major shift in the minds of voters or the math of computers to sneak into the Fiesta Bowl.
More likely, either Southern Cal, Texas or one of a handful of SEC teams gets the nod as a one-loss title game participant.
Like Auburn two years ago, an undefeated Rutgers team would have no opportunity to win a national title. How many more teams would need to get shorted before the BCS is dumped for good?

The fact of the matter is that, even though the talkings heads try to tell us , over, and over, and over how much the Big east has progressed. They are still looked upon as a 2nd tier conference. And so Rutgers will not get to the big show. Too many people think too many teams are better than any big east team. I was impressed by Rutgers and Rice improved his Heisman chances but for Brohm and Louisville to do so badly speaks for the team and the conference. If WV beats Rutgers it will be even worse.
Te good news for Rutgers is they might get a BCS bowl if they beat WV.

I have to give credit to Tranghese in his 2nd half interview during the game. He was asked about this specific scenario - an undefeated Big East team gets elbowed out of the BCS title game by a 1-loss team with better computer or poll ranking.
His reaction - that college football coaches shouldn't complain about it, as it was their presidents and ADs that agreed to the BCS system, it was what they wanted. He specifically stated that he wouldn't complain if that happened, we shall see if he is good to his word.

I wish people would stop bashing the Big East. You are allowed to think that none of those teams belong in the national championship discussion while still giving them credit for what they've built as a conference and as individual programs since they were decimated by the ACC raid. I'm seeing all of this stuff about so-and-so sucks - but some of these teams and players and coaches work every bit as hard as our favorite team, and are doing some good things here and there.

I agree. If I couldn't have Tressel, I would take Schiano in a heartbeat.

ALL Big East schools need to go out and schedule games against the SEC, Big 10, Big XII, Pac - 10, etc. and then I will consider them a legit BCS conference. As of this year the entire conference's biggest road win was... at Navy!!

If they want any shot at being a part of the BCS they need to scheulde non-conferene games against BCS conferences, and win!

I agree, but I heard at least one commentator say that Louisville was turned down by at least 10 BCS-conference teams who wanted no part of them. It seems funny to me that the fans of all these 1-loss teams can trash the Big East and say they don't deserve a shot at the National Title when they don't have the guts to play the likes of West Virginia, Louisville, etc.

Louisville played Miami, Kentucky, and at Kansas State. Compare that to the non-conference performances of Cal and Arkansas.

Nathan Baird, welcome to the world of college football. I have just a couple of observations on your article. Since Rutgers is one of just 'two unbeaten teams left among the six BCS conferences', is it Ohio State of Michigan which is no longer in the Big Ten?

Secondly, the 'Fiesta Bowl' is not the National Championship game. (This is a recording).

Specifically, the comment was that 10 SEC teams turned down scheduling games against Louisville.
