LOTR, Hobbit geek-fest

Would I see it again? Yup.

Would I see it again in 3d? Nope. I've never been interested in the technology, and I have slight astigmatism that throws it off for me.

As someone who knows the "canon", I thought it was well done. There are a few quibbles that I have, though.

(SPOILERS)

There are several moments where it feels as if Jackson has gone Lucas on us- he's more excited about showing off his new technology than he is helping progress the storyline. The Stone Giants and the flight from the Goblin kingdom stand out in this vein.

The original books have sly humor; the LOTR movies had that plus a sense of whimsy. One thing that took me out of the "magic" of the Hobbit was the 20th century humor- snot and fart jokes.

Eagles are still buttholes. Just drop them off at the Misty Mountain and call it good, will you?

Radagast's character makes sense in the film; helps progress the story, helps tie things from Tolkein's other works together. That being said, he's a bit too "daft" for me.

Like I said- I'll see it again, and will be in line for the midnight showings of the next two movies as well.

This one wasn't as long as the LoTR trilogy movies. I think it runs 2 1/2 hours which is long but in comparison not as bad. I felt like this one progressed faster than The Fellowship of the Ring did as well. As already stated, the violence isn't gory but more cartoony. You will see orcs getting beheaded but no blood or anything. Golem is fantastic in this one. He's definitely creepy crazy but in a funny kind of way (him arguing with himself and talking about eating things). My buddy, who believe it or not did not like the LoTR trilogy, LOVED this one and cannot wait until the 2nd and 3rd.

I just don't think it was necessary to split this into three films. I get they're trying to milk as much money as they can out of it a la George Lucas, but it seems superfluous. It would've made a nice, tight film on its own.

They certainly are milking it for what it's worth, but at the same time I think back to the old '77 Hobbit cartoon. They cut a lot out of that movie for one. Second, it was a cartoon, so the action is fast paced and brief typically with lots of transitions. They like to often throw in short little montages (I recall a lot of short goblin/orc chases to music). Scenes and conversations aren't usually long winded like a live action movie. That said, the cartoon was 90 minutes even with some items cut out I think. I think it would have been fine as two movies and would have been acceptable. Three does seem to be pushing it imo.

Just saw it, thought it was excellent.

Second this. Saw it last night & thoroughly enjoyed it. Did a great job with the back stories & even if you've never read any of the books, I don't think you'll be all that confused as to what is going on.

From the 1980 Return of the King, but still a classic and representative of the '77 flavor:

Finally got around to seeing the Hobbit this weekend. After being very disappointed with LotR film adaptation by Jackson, I wasn't expecting much. Especially with the concerns of stretching the relatively short book into 3 movies. That being said, I was very surprised by how much I enjoyed the movie and how well I thought it worked.

It didn't feel like a 2 hour and 45 minute movie, nor did the additions and changes feel forced or absurd (as was the major problem with LotR). The more child-like nature of the Hobbit was preserved--even the Goblin King's cartoonish representation seemed to work for the movie. The only interpretation I didn't like in the entire movie was the giants in the Misty Mountains--too grand of a scale was used. Most important, I am actually excited about the next two installments to see how they handle the rest of the story.

I found the entire viewing experience incredibly nostalgic.

The sets, music, and actors made it feel like it was 2001 all over again. Being back in Middle Earth was a lot of fun, and I can't wait to see parts 2 and 3 (Although I share similar concerns about the third. Seems like it would have been perfect to leave as a 2 part series)

I didn't care for the Thorin and the orc storyline, felt a little over the top and forced. However, it wasn't terrible, I just didn't care for it.

Ha - I had a wall of text ready to submit, and when I hit "submit", it froze my computer. I don't want to type it all out, again, and I don't see why anyone would want to read it. So here's the short version: the movie was really well done. It was probably more drawn-out than it needed to be, but as long as it's entertaining to me, I won't complain.
