A little over a year ago I was walking our two precious Yorkies in the park. One of them I used to let off of the leash because she was a good, smart and very energetic dog and I felt sure that she wouldn't run into the street, she always listened. Little did I know that on the other side of the squash courts some 5 foot 100 pound woman was walking three dogs the size of grizzly bears. When they saw my dog one of them took off and she couldn't hold it, he grabbed my 10 lbs Yorkie and shook it pretty good, tore her up. We managed to get the big dog off of her and she was still alive, in fact she ran away. I got her and took her to the vet as fast as I could but she died on the way. This dog was very precious to my wife and she took it very badly. Truth be said it caused us to become separated. We still live together but we have our own rooms and separate lives. That dog meant so much to her, you can't imagine. Seeing it happen and then seeing my wife's reaction, her grief are the two most horrible things I've ever witnessed in my entire life. I would give just about anything for it to not have happened.

Putting down another dog today, 4 years almost to the day after we lost our first one to cancer. Oden joined our family at the same time his namesake joined the Buckeye basketball family, and his career has been similarly injury-plagued. Fortunately my girls aren't old enough to have become too emotionally attached to him, but my older daughter will surely be asking "Where Odie?" for awhile.

One of the life lessons I learned.. is the amazing power of a new pup.. in getting over a lost furry child...

We're a dog's heaven household...

I did NOT want a 3rd dog into the household years back... He was a 3 mth old collie... and within a couple months we lost our male Sheltie (smartest/coolest dog we ever owned).. the house was devastated.. especially my OSU grad who was the dog's mate for 12 years... it was heart wrenching...

Somehow this new pup sensed it.. and refused to not force himself onto my son.. almost like divine intervention... the devastation lasted a long time.. but this new pup was amazing at helping the family recover

This will be the first time since I was 19 that I've been without a dog of my own, and it's been hard putting down 3 in 4 years, so we're going to take at least a short break... but I imagine it won't be too long before we're back in the market for a pup. I'd guess 2 years tops.
