    This is funny....

    Calhoun angered by salary question

HARTFORD, Conn. -- Connecticut coach Jim Calhoun got into a heated exchange at a postgame news conference Saturday with a freelance journalist and political activist who questioned why the coach of a public university was making $1.6 million in tough economic times.

"Not a dime back," Calhoun joked as Ken Krayeske asked about Calhoun's salary and the state's budget deficit, which is estimated at $944 million for the current fiscal year and up to $8 billion over the next two years.

When Krayeske continued the line of questioning, Calhoun got angry.

"My best advice to you is, shut up," said Calhoun, who offered to talk to Krayeske after the news conference that followed the top-ranked Huskies' 64-50 victory over South Florida.

"If these guys covered this stuff, I wouldn't have to do it," said Krayeske, who had been granted a photo pass to attend the news conference.
    Now visibly angry, Calhoun responded.

"Quite frankly, we bring in $12 million to the university, nothing to do with state funds," Calhoun shouted back. "We make $12 million a year for this university. Get some facts and come back and see me. ... Don't throw out salaries and other things.

"Get some facts and come back and see me. We turn over $12 million to the University of Connecticut, which is state-run. Next question."

Krayeske, of Hartford, is a political activist and self-described freelance journalist who has landed in the headlines after other high-profile incidents in the past.

In this economy, how can we have idiot "free-lance" failed English majors errr ummm sorry reporters/political activists question coaches??

But really, what the hell is a free lance reporter/political activist doing at a basketball game?

What right does the highest-paid public employee in the State of Connecticut have to tell a reporter at a post-game press conference to get bent, in an angry manner?

I think the guy had a perfect right to ask the question, and Calhoun showed his lack of class and poor anger-management skills (not like we should be surprised at that). Calhoun should have handled this much better.

Mr. Calhoun has earned his salary. Surprised he's not payed more, actually.

Weak attempt at journalism. I'm no expert, but if the "journalist" is the star of the news story over the person he's supposed to be covering, he ought to be fired or have his credentials taken away from him, without question.

I think the reporter was looking for attention and asked it only to be an annoying POS.

Calhoun was correct to tell him to shove it up his ass. Calhoun was there in relation to a basketball game, not some stupid non-issue like his salary.

First of all, Jim Calhoun is right. He brings the school a TON more money than he gets. If Jim Calhoun wasn't doing his job right, then he gets fired for being paid too much. That's how it works in any industry.

How much you make is how much you're worth to your company.

I'm going to guess that this reporter isn't making much.

Here's a coach who does everything right, works his butt off, and bring in a ton of money for the state school, and still receives a psychological attack by a loser reporter who knows [censored]. What has the country come to.

Don't you know, Calhoun makes more than $8.00 an hour. He's rich. Obviously he's EVIL.

We're sports fans. Sports fans generally feel like coaches are worth what they get paid.

But when major universities, such as Arizona State, are asking faculty and staff to take 13 unpaid working days this semester and Calhoun is getting what a dozen assistant professors get paid, we cab expect more questions about salaries.

Uh, maybe because he generates eight times his salary back to the university?

No, the guy didn't have a right to ask a question that had absolutely nothing to do with the game. It wasn't a political news interview, it was a post-game news conference. The punk was a shit-head free lancer who conned his way into the conference.

there is a time and a place for everything...

i'll file that one under attention whore journalist who used the presser to garner public attention because he knew if he did it the right way and scheduled a private interview and wrote the story himself it would have been buried on page 20.

That "journalist" is a complete tool, and should feel lucky he got off so easily. For one thing, Calhoun is a state employee in name only. You could find any number of state employees who's job it is to raise funds for public entities, and their salaries are nothing compared to how much money they bring in. My brother, until recently, was a grant writer for the state of Oregon's social work system. I guarantee you, what he was paid did not compare to the amount of money he was responsible for bringing in to the system. Calhoun's situation is even more extreme. This is exactly like when people complain that OSU's athletic department takes away money from the university. If those people took the time to research the numbers, they would see that not only does the athletic dept take no money from the university's general funds, but they are one of the biggest contributors to the expansion of everything from the library to the general scholarship fund. Tressel chipped in on a $1mil donation to YSU last year. Does anyone with a brain think that he would do that if OSU was hurting for money? Fact is that at most major universities (which UConn is one), the major sports programs not only pay for all the other sports, but contribute greatly to the uniersities' coffers. OSU blossomed when the football program took off. Calhoun took it easy on that clown, not to mention that his contract was in place well before the state's deficit came into question.

State employees are laid off all the time. No one seems to give a fuck what the governor makes.
