If you've only biked a few times, you might need this:

Seriously, I have a Giant (mountain bike), and it took a beating in Arizona since I went mountain biking quite often. It's been a great bike. I've never owned a road bike, so I can't speak for Giant's road bikes, but my best friend loves her hybrid Trek. I don't think you can go wrong with either Giant or Trek. Great bikes.

Thought about a hybrid but won't be riding off road so decided to go with a road bike.

Heard nothing but good things about these two bikes.

I've been thinking about getting a new bike as well, since my mountain bike has seen its better days, and I wouldn't hesitate to buy either brand. Check out some of the cycling sites online -- they probably have useful reviews.

By the way, stay off the sidewalks! Nothing is worse than the whiney bike riders who constantly complain about motorists not respecting the laws, then ride their bikes down sidewalks with no consideration for the law much less the safety of pedestrians, children and dogs. My favorites are the ones wearing helmets (they're all about their own precious safety) as they tear along a Chicago sidewalk terrorizing people, their children and their pets.

By the looks of it, you do need to get a bigger bike.

Both good bikes, Trek is a little overpriced if you ask me. They are taking advantage of the Lance effect and who could blame them. It depends on how much you are looking to spend, and as someone else said, your size. giant is nice because they have different frame sizes and setups based upon how you like to ride. If you just want to cruise around in a more upright position, or if you are down on your bars more.

Specialized makes some good bikes too, as do a couple smaller companies. I would definitely spend the money on some good clipless pedals and some of the gay bike shoes. They make a huge difference when you are on the bike for a while.

Now is a good time to buy stuff because they are trying to get rid of stuff for the end of the season. Try a couple of the mail order sites for accessories they are pretty cheap right now, and you can get good deals on clearance items.

I recommend Nashbar, or Performance bike for mail order.

guys i work with bike into the city every day. one has a bianchi single gear (no hills in chi town) and the other has a cannondale. good luck picking one out. one other thing, they both bought their bikes in the secondary market for way cheaper than you get from a bike shop. its worth looking around on craigslist etc

If you aren't looking to make an imediate purchase, I was talking with the guy at westland schwinn last week (Trek and Giant). He is getting ready to go out of business. He wasn't sure if he would be having an auction or just clearancing everything, but I am sure that there will be some good deals to be had. He said then that it looked to be the end of Sept before he would close up.

I'm 6'3 and think the bike they will get in tomorrow is $650. It's a Giant.

I've also seen these assholes in Chicago. The weird thing is, every one of the bastards has a little bumper sticker on their bike that says 'Fredo'.

My wife rode on RAGBRAI this summer and didn't know if there are any other bikers on here.

I rode with her the other night and enjoyed it and am looking into purchasing a road bike.

Looking at buying a Giant or a Trek.

Any recommendations from experienced bikers on here would be appreciated.

Thumpser, from a guy that owns 4.

First find out how much you want to pay.

  • under $500...buy used
  • 500-1000 you can get a great used or even a deal in a bike shop
  • 1000-1500 you can get a bike that you can race or just ride
  • 1500 you are getting into the racing territory
Next find out the material that you want to ride.
  • Alum (Cannondale) is very stiff inexpensive but tend to be a bit harsh on the ass
  • Steel is a great frame material with the right tubeset
  • Titanium is great and will last forever
  • Carbon is stiff and is easy on your butt (dampens vibration), it is a bit dead feeling.
Once you have the $ amount set and the frame material, and if you are going to buy new or used then it gets much easier to select. There are a bizillian frame makes and most of them are just logo-ed and painted frames that are made in China or South Korea. Trust me, I have seen all the catalogs, many are just spect'ed and then painted.

I am happy to help you out if you let me know the above. There are some really sweet deals on EBAY if you know what to look for.
