Look Who's Transferring Now (The Portal)

Syracuse Freshman All-American DT Maraad Watson enters the portal

Though it never hurts to have proven production at defensive end, defensive tackle is Ohio State’s greatest need in the portal this spring. Through the first few days, pickings aren’t overly plentiful in terms of players with proven college production so far, but a player who fits that mold decided to transfer on Friday.

Maraad Watson, a 6-foot-3, 313-pound defensive tackle who was named a Freshman All-American last season at Syracuse, announced his intention to transfer with three years of eligibility remaining.

Though there has been no public connection to OSU as of yet (and in fairness, he’s only been in the portal for a few hours), his profile is exactly the type Ohio State and Johnson could have their eyes on.

Watson appeared in 13 games for Syracuse last season, recording 31 tackles, 10 quarterback pressures, 1.5 tackles for loss, a sack and a pass breakup. Per Pro Football Focus, Watson recorded an overall grade of 65.1. His strongest asset is run defense, as Watson graded 77.4 overall in that category. As a pass rusher, Watson’s grade was 58.2.

Ohio State Buckeyes may have to beat out a major SEC program for a key transfer portal player

Though the Ohio State Buckeyes aren’t going to dip as heavily into the transfer portal as they did in the winter, they’re still looking to make some additions.

Following the spring, head coach Ryan Day said that the defensive line is one place the team would have to take a look at.

"I think we've got to take a hard look at it," Day said. "I don't think I have the answer right now. But we've got to look at it. It seemed to me like there was just a lot of knockback on the offensive side of the ball here. But then again, I don't want to make any judgments until I watch the film."

Ohio State set to host Georgia Southern DL Troy Pikes

According to Pete Nakos of On3, Ohio State will host Georgia Southern transfer DL Troy Pikes next weekend. Pikes visited Georgia this past week and is receiving interest from other schools, such as Ole Miss, South Carolina, and Maryland.

Ohio State Buckeyes are showing interest in an experienced offensive weapon in the transfer portal

After making most of their additions in the winter transfer portal, the Ohio State Buckeyes can be choosy with who they want to add in the spring.

For the most part, the Buckeyes have focused on the offensive and defensive lines. Ohio State found two projected starters in the winter portal for the offensive line, Ethan Onianwa and Phillip Daniels. Depth on both of the lines is somewhere Ohio State has looked.

An interesting player has come to the surface who you wouldn’t expect the Buckeyes to be interested in.

According to On3’s Hayes Fawcett, Ohio State has reached out to BYU transfer WR/KR Keelan Marion. Marion entered the portal over the weekend after spending the last two seasons at BYU and the previous two seasons at UConn. Marion will have one year of eligibility left.

There is no shortage of playmakers for the Buckeyes, so this raised some eyebrows. Marion did have two kickoffs returned for a touchdown last season and averaged 26 yards a return. Ohio State may see the value there, where they have shifted players around the last couple of years.
