Level of Expectations (Merged)

Come on now, 29 points in a game where the opposing offense has 5 turnovers isnt that tough,PSU turned the ball over 5 times that game.
Look, I'll agree that penn state has one of the best defenses the buckeyes have seen in a this season ... and last season too. They brought back pretty much everybody from a defense that was good last year. BUT it seems clear to me judging from what I've heard from the players and the coaches not only last week, but all season long, that the expectations are drastically higher than what has been achieved. Where is the disconnect? Are the coaches placing too high expectations on the players? I don't think so. The potential is there. Something is keeping our bucks from achieving what they want to achieve ... and I think part of that is that is when these objectives aren't being met week in and week out they start to lose some of their meaning. more bluntly, the offense may be getting used to sucking.

I am in total agreement with 21 and LV on this. If there is one glaring thing to me after watching the game again (it was still painful the 2nd time) is that our Oline does not play nearly consistent enough. There are times when they look really sharp, and agressive, then there are time when you see them zone blocking and getting killed. I am not sure if some plays require them to zone block and some to drive block, but it is clear that they do not deploy the same scheme throughout the game. I know that assignments chnage, but usually not schemes correct at least not in the HS I played at or college I played at.

What has happend to Peasron and Mitchum and Skinner. I have heard nothing of these kids, are they considered bust, hurt, developing or what?

Well we have more depth this year and most guys take at least till their sophmore year to crack the two deep. Keep in mind Downing didnt start playing until midway through last year and He is one of our top lineman. I would rather have our lineman redshirt and get a year or two under their belts b4 they are thrown into live action unless they are that good. See Boone, Mangold, Rehring. Sims was basically forced too his freshmen year(not a knock, but I believe there were a couple injuries).<!-- / message -->

Yeah, Sims played alot because of Ivan Douglas' unfortunate struggles with the blood clot that forced him to retire.

What year did we move Mangold in and Stepanovich over to guard (due in part to Bishop struggling)? I was thinking 2003, but Mangold got an inordinate amount of time for a backup C in the title year. Was there ineffectiveness and injuries that year as well?

No there was times when we had an overabalanced line and we brought an extra lineman in. That is when Mangold would go to center. It was more Mangold's sophmore year when Step moved over to guard b/c of the ankle and Mangold became the everydown center.

i still say that troy smith single handidly messed up the game for us. i mean im not sayin that everyone played perfect but his INT that lead to the touchdown was the game right there. sure, he did make some plays and did decent at times but then him fumbling the ball at the end is bullshit. if you cant see a fuckin 300 pound defensive end comin at you with any kind of peripheral vision then he has even worse vision problems than i thought.

he needs to learn to read more than 1 guy on each route before tryin to squeeze out a 2 yard scramble. atleast with zwick, the ball gets evenly distributed and anyone can hand the ball off to pittman.

oh yeah and if my opinion offends all of you so much im so sorry but i thought this was supposed to be a forum with different views being discussed in it.

You can't be serious. One single player can not lose a game. We could also say that Ryan Hamby lost the Texas game, but that is stupid.

When one guy makes a mistake the other guys pick him up. It is a team sport and there isnt an I in team.

You've got to be kidding. Peripheral Vision my ass. Watch the Game again Troy Smith is clearly looking to the left side/middle of the field and got hit from his right side. Thats called your blindside. I don't know any QB who can see his blind side with peripheral vision. Its not TS fault that the DE was unblocked either.

westend, watch the UM game this weekend. That defense will perform very differently. They will still be solid, no doubt, but being on the road (vs. NW) and being at home (vs. OSU) makes a huge difference. We definitely should have scored at least 10 more points vs. PSU, but the Northwestern statistics are greatly skewed by 5 turnovers and NW being comfortable at home. Our drastically different performances on the road should make that point clear.

technically, it wasn't his blindside since he was facing the defender, but I know what you mean. And he's not the first QB to be hit unsuspectingly from that side either. No defender should ever sprint straight around a blocker like that, that probably played a role as well. A second later he may have been more conscious of the rush.

I agree fully about the O line. The Hamby play where he missed the block is a physical mistake this can happen. If youlook close at the games there have been to many times when a pass rusher comes untouched because of a mental mitake, wrong protection whatever . If you have to keep your TE in your having protection problems.

If send everyone out everytime then they bring 6 and you are outnumbered. It is not as easy to block up stunts and slants as you might think. I thought that the o-line had been doing a great job picking up the rush all year, until Barton when down and then I think there was some confusion.

Cohesion with an OL is so undervalued in football IMO. When you have guys who have jelled together they know each other, that id DT slants he might not to chip first to help out, etc etc.. That jsut takes time. When Barton went out that hurt us there, but in all honesty the past couple of years this is where I think (opinion, right or wrong) we have not developed is on the Oline. Grad has pointed out that he does not like the zone scheme, and I agree. At the college level the amount of time and practice it takes to be be good at zone blocking and to have the jellying is too much. Look around at the good O-Lines in CF, most of the time it is hat on hat with a guard or 2 getting to the next level and blocking a LB or cheating Saftey.

ok guys, obviously no one agrees with me, but its fine.

i guess what i should have said is that i think if Justin Zwick was in the game, we may have won. I'm glad that TS passed deep today, and it paid off. wow what a concept. I just HATE how he looks at his #1 WR and then takes of to run. He fumbles way too much and averages way too little to do that. Even today, when we were starting to come back, he fumbles the ball in our territory. Thank god our defense bailed him out AGAIN and they missed the FG. Also, on way too many third and longs, he decides to just tuck it in and run, and ends up bein 10 yards short of the first down. that is bullshit, plain bullshit. even the commentator was talking about how it was a poor decision to run when you did not have room too, and it was third down. Its ridiculous that TS really has only had 1 great game, against Michigan last year, and he is now the starter. Zwick has won games at QB, and i dont have to worry every single play that he is gonna try to force something and turn the ball over.

no he's not. it seems like some people see a few problems and miss out on all of the good things that he did right out there. You woulda thought Troy coughed up teh ball 3 times and threw 2 INTs by his above description. I didn't see a single forced pass ALL DAY. I saw some lack of looking around, but definitely no forcing.
