Lebron James (Los Angeles Lakers)

James becomes youngest to reach 4,000 career points
ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) -- LeBron James made history. Donyell Marshall helped make sure it came in a victory.

James became the youngest player in NBA history to reach 4,000 career points and finished with 26 to help the Cleveland Cavaliers beat the Orlando Magic 108-100 in overtime on Sunday night.

"Unbelievable," Cleveland coach Mike Brown said. "That kid is a talent. It couldn't happen to a better person. He's a great person, great leader and I enjoy being around him. To be around him when it happened is a tremendous feeling."

James (20 years, 318 days) entered the game needing 10 points to pass Kobe Bryant (21 years, 216 days). After scoring on a jumper, two driving layups and a dunk, James reached the milestone on a 21-footer with 58.7 seconds left in the first quarter.

"I don't let individual statistics make me unfocused or more focused," James said. "I just came out and tried to attack early and get us a big lead. We were able to take it into overtime and get a win."

Marshall sent the game into overtime, making a 3-pointer with 18.1 seconds left. Steve Francis missed a potential game-winning 18-footer at the buzzer.

"It's devastating ... it's a heartbreaker," Orlando's DeShawn Stevenson said of Marshall's shot. "Donyell's a good shooter. You have got to give him credit."

Larry Hughes had 22 points for Cleveland, which has won four straight. The three previous wins came by an average of 19 points.

"We needed a game like this," Marshall said. "We needed a game to show what we can do and start learning how to think at the end of the game. It was a good test for us."

Francis led Orlando with 22 points and Dwight Howard had 21 points and 16 rebounds.

Zydrunas Ilgauskas, who had 20 points, scored two baskets and Hughes hit a jumper as the Cavaliers jumped out to a 94-88 lead in overtime and never trailed after that.

"We had different guys step up down the stretch and we found a way to win," Brown said. "We're still in the learning process and still have a long way to go."

After the Magic fell behind 48-31 at the half, Pat Garrity's 3 and a basket by Howard pulled them even at 84 with 1:46 left. Francis then gave Orlando an 86-84 advantage on two free throws with just over a minute to go.

"The first half, they took our hearts," Howard said. "We just came back and got our hearts back. We fought so hard to get back into the game. Marshall hit the shot at the end of the game ... we were supposed to get that win."

After Hughes made one of two free throws to cut the Cavaliers' deficit to 86-85, Francis made two more free throws extending the Magic lead to three at 88-85 with 18.1 seconds to play.

"We're trying to become one of the best teams in the Eastern Conference, if not the whole league," James said. "We're a confident team. We had confidence we were going to win the game."

1. Great to get a close win on the road. But letting go of that 17-point lead doesn't leave much to be desired.

2. I still question Lebron's ability to take over a game in the fourth quarter. He absolutely disappeared while Orlando made their comeback.

3. Z (16 pts in 4th and overtime) and Hughes (9 boards, 7 assists to go with 22 points and 4 steals) played their best games of the young season so far.

4. And of course, Donyell Marshall showed he's worth every penny.

i think if Lebron wasn't a cav, this board would treat him like mike vick.

How does LBJ compare to Vick? Besides the fact that they are two of the best athletes in their respective sports I don't see many similarities. Lebron is good at every aspect of his game. Vick is only good at 1 aspect of his game, running the ball. If Lebron was like Vick he would only be good at driving to the hoop and wouldn't be able to shoot for shit. From the sound of it Lebron has been busting his ass to be a better shooter this season. His 3 pt % is just under 40% this season which isn't bad.
As a non Cav fan do you watch Lebron and think, "He isn't that good"? I think last night they figured out that the Cavs have enough of a team now that they don't need to run the show through Lebron all the time, which is only going to make everyone better. Personally, I think the Falcons would be better if they stopped running the show through Vick and turned him into a "Slash" rather than a QB.

no, but I don't say that about Vick either. If by "not that good" you mean "not as good as everybody jizzing over him thinks", then yes....I don't think he is as good as everybody thinks right now. He will be, but he's not yet.

my comment was more towards the cleveland fanbase and how they underrate anybody good...unless they are playing in cleveland. then all of a sudden that person is god.

I find you comparison a little weird BN27:biggrin: , but nonethelees here go my thoughts.

Ok I am a Mike Vick fan and Lebron fan. Both play for my favorite teams. I defend Vick when people try to bash him b/c they think he can only run, well alot of people are mistaken there in my opinion and I think he could bring a superbowl to ATL b4 it is over with.

As for comparing him to LBJ that isnt a good comparison b/c Lebron could easily take over as the best player in the league this year and Vick is maybe in the top 5 of QB's.

I said earlier in the thread about 2 months ago that Lebron will bring championships to cleveland like Jordan brought them to Chi-town.

I don't understand why people dont think this can't happen. Lebron consistently has games just like Jordan did, He can shoot the 3-ball better and he has moves just like Jordan. I also think James got his wing-man faster than Jordan, b/c Hughes has showed us why they brought him in this year.

I think the only thing missing with the Cavs is Gooden a little more experience and bulk and a Good PG that can move the ball up the floor and play defense, and some better defense.

They have the bench, they have 3 guys that can put up good numbers, the have shooters, and they have a good coach in place that will get them to play D.

I know some of you would be suprised to see Cleveland there in the final four at the end of the year, but I honestly wouldn't. Lebron can take over any game by himself and with him and hughes together they will do big things.

Yeah I might be highly optimistic but when you have a once in a lifetime player why not be optimistic.

They have two loses one to the Spurs where they forgot to come out of the locker room at half-time, and Memphis where they were coming off that tough loss to the spurs.

They have been dominant at Home, and I look for that to continue.

I'm not really comparing Vick and Lebron.........Lebron wins that every time. I'm just saying that Cleveland fans tend to overrate their players while underrating anybody else.

For instance, I went to a Cavs-6ers game when I was in Cleveland for the NCAA tourny. Lebron had an off night, but AI went off. This was my first time seeing Lebron.....and technically my first time seeing AI (I've only been to 1 other NBA game, in Philly. I was about 4 rows from the roof. Couldn't see much.). I think AI is the best player in the NBA. I don't think many Cavs fans would agree.

.

I 'm going to agree with you there. Actually, he didn't disappear, he was there, taking bad 18-25ft shots. They weren't face up shots either, they were fadeaways with a guy all over him.

He has enough respect from the officials now that more often than not, if he drives to the hoop, he's either going to get the points or the call. It was driving me crazy yesterday in the 4th.

When he came out in overtime, he was driving to the hoop and drew at least 3 calls, with one being a continuation three point play.

Ok, now you really are full of beans. AI best in the game? You must not watch much NBA do you ? You must be too busy watching those damn Raiders
blowing another game!!!! Hey, I'm with you there.

Getting back to it, I wouldn't call LBJ the best in the league. At least not yet. At this point, Garnett still have him, as well as a couple others , beat.

The thing about Lebron is that if has has an off night shooting, he still contributes with steals, rebounds and assists. His shooting has actually improved alot since he came into the league.

Iverson is good, but no where near the best in the NBA. For one, he takes too many shots, and doesn't shoot that well. He takes nearly 25 shots a game and shoots near 40%. I like watching him play, but I can think of at least 10 guys I'd take over him.
